# A Cornflower Stripe Window Seat Cushion and the Handwork You Can See

*Rosa starts with three common questions, then walks over to a sunny window seat by the French doors to show where good finishing hides in plain sight.*

> **The quick answer:** A striped window seat cushion looks hand-finished when the stripes sit square to the front edge and line up where the top meets the boxing, the piping runs in one unbroken line, and the corners stand square. Here a solid cornflower welt outlines a cornflower and ivory stripe, so the pale cushion doesn't melt into the white painted base.

## Buyer questions, before we look at the photo

**A common question:** My bench has a thin board in the middle with a narrow recess around it. Can the cushion be notched to fit?

**The workshop's answer:** Not reliably. A notch that narrow can't be sewn and still hold its shape. The workshop recommends running the cushion straight past the recess, as in its example template, and filling in the measurements on that guide.

**A common question:** Would an indoor linen cushion be all right on a covered balcony or porch?

**The workshop's answer:** On a covered balcony that rain barely reaches, yes. For a screened porch that gets pollen, dust and humidity, the workshop recommends its outdoor fabric and can send samples first.

**A common question:** Does the French-style tufted bench cushion include the backrest?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. It includes the seat cushion, the backrest cushion and the armrests. The size options refer only to the seat cushion's width and length; the backrest and armrests are made to match.

## Three trapezoids and the sides people forget

A buyer sent the workshop the construction plan of a large corner bench and asked for three trapezoid cushions, about 26 3/4 in (68 cm) deep and 3 1/8 in (8 cm) thick, in a white and cream linen. Before quoting, the workshop asked for every side length, including the short end side at each corner. In the end the buyer took another offer.

I tell this one anyway, because the question was the right one. A trapezoid has four sides, and the angled ends at the corners are the ones people forget to measure. Nobody can finish a corner neatly that was never drawn. The [trapezoid measurements](https://cushionguide.com/guides/trapezoid-cushion-measurements/) Pattern lists all four.

## Where the handwork shows on a sunny window seat

Pull up a chair, neighbor, and look where I'm looking. Not at the hydrangeas yet. At the front edge.

The cushion is a cornflower and ivory stripe in [striped cotton](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/striped-cotton-and-ticking/), box-edged, with a solid cornflower welt. That welt is the first piece of handwork you notice. On a pale cushion against a white paneled base, the edge would disappear; the darker piping draws it back. A good welt runs in one line from end to end, with no wobble where it turns the corner.

The second is the stripe itself. On a [window seat cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/window-seat-cushions/), stripes should sit square to the front edge and meet the boxing without a jog. You can't straighten a crooked stripe after the cut, so it has to be laid out before the scissors come out. The [stripe direction Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/striped-cushion-stripe-direction/) shows the choices.

The props are there to let that work be seen. Two oatmeal linen pillows are plain on purpose, so the stripe is the only pattern. An ivory pillow at the left end closes the seat like a bookend. White hydrangeas in a stoneware jug repeat the ivory in the stripe. Sheer voile and the open French door fill the corner with garden light, which is where a soft blue looks its best, and the pale oak floor keeps it all warm.

One more reason to love a light stripe by a sunny door: it forgives gradual fading better than a solid color does.

## Pinned by Rosa: stripe, welt, jug, pillows and the door

Five pins, from the striped cushion and its blue welt out to the hydrangeas, the linen pillows and the open French door.

1. **Cornflower stripe cushion**: A soft stripe stays fresh in strong window light.
2. **Solid blue piping**: A darker welt outlines the pale cushion against white paint.
3. **Jug of hydrangeas**: White flowers repeat the ivory in the stripe.
4. **Oatmeal linen pillows**: Plain pillows let the stripe be the only pattern.
5. **Open French door**: Garden light and a green view complete the fresh palette.

## Four finishing checks for a striped cushion

- ✓ The welt runs in one unbroken line, with no pucker at the corners.
- ✓ Stripes sit square to the front edge and line up where the top meets the boxing.
- ✓ Corners stand square instead of rounding over.
- ✓ The zipper sits at the back, out of sight from the room.

## On the cutting table: the seat by the French doors

| | |
|---|---|
| Piece | Window seat cushion, single rectangle |
| Fabric | Striped cotton, cornflower blue and ivory |
| Piping | Contrast, solid cornflower blue |
| Edge | Box edge |
| Base | White paneled window seat |
| Pillows | Two oatmeal linen, one ivory at the left end |
| Light | Sheer voile and an open French door |
| Best for | Sunny living room seats |
| Before ordering | Decide the stripe direction before cutting |

> A pale striped window seat cushion against white paint needs a darker welt; without it, the edge melts into the base and the seat loses its shape.

> **Tailor's margin:** Before ordering stripes, lay the swatch on the seat and decide which way they run. A stripe can't be straightened after the cut.

## Questions buyers ask next

### When should I settle the stripe direction on a window seat cushion?

Decide before the fabric is cut. Running them front to back, square to the front edge, keeps the seat looking straight from the room. Whichever way you choose, keep the direction the same on every piece.

### Why put blue piping on a blue striped cushion?

The solid welt is darker than the stripe, so it outlines a pale cushion against white paint. Without it, the edge fades into the base. Matching the welt to one stripe color keeps the pattern calm.

### Will a light stripe fade in a sunny window?

Strong sun fades most fabrics over time, but a light stripe forgives gradual fading better than a solid color, because small shifts in shade are harder to spot across a pattern.
