# A cornflower stripe corner floor cushion, read in three kinds of light

*Harlan sits with a blue-and-ivory corner pouf from breakfast to supper and watches the stripe change its mind.*

> **The quick answer:** A cornflower blue corner floor cushion will not look the same at noon, at dusk and on your phone. Daylight shows the true blue, warm lamplight pushes it toward gray, and screens can brighten or cool it. Judge the stripe from a swatch by a window, and if pieces are ever remade, have the whole visible set cut from one fabric batch.

## Pinned by Harlan in the print corner

Five pins, from the ivory welt on the seat curve to the monstera standing guard at the edge.

1. **Ivory welt outline**: A pale welt traces the curve of the seat against the blue stripe.
2. **Striped backrest pillow**: Cornflower blue is pulled straight from the prints above, so art and seat read as one group.
3. **Oak wall shelf**: Vases and books on the left wall balance the gallery on the right.
4. **Abstract print gallery**: One color from the art repeated in the fabric makes the corner look designed around it.
5. **Monstera**: The plant and the thin lamp opposite bracket the pouf like parentheses.

## Morning, evening, and the screen in your pocket

Morning comes in soft and warm from the side, and the stripe shows its true colors: cornflower blue and ivory, the blue lifted straight out of the abstract prints above. The leaf cut-out in one print carries the same blue. That is why the art and the pouf read as one family and not two purchases.

The pouf itself is a corner floor cushion with a box edge, a seat that follows the corner, and two striped backrest pillows standing against the walls. An ivory welt runs along the curve of the seat. In daylight it draws the shape plainly. After dark, under the white-and-oak floor lamp, it does something better: it stays pale while the blue sinks, so you can still see where the seat ends.

That sinking is worth knowing about, my friend. Warm lamplight is kind to wood and skin and hard on blue. The cornflower that looked like a spring sky at breakfast will look like slate by supper. Nothing changed but the light. A phone screen tells a third story, and it is seldom the true one.

So I read color the way my old foreman taught me: by the window, at midday, with the swatch in my hand. When do you sit in your corner most, morning or evening? Look at the swatch then, too, and read [screen versus daylight](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-color-screen-vs-daylight/) before you trust any photograph, this one included.

The rest of the corner is balance. The oak wall shelf with vases, books and a mug answers the gallery on the other wall. The monstera and the slim lamp stand at the outer edges like a pair of parentheses. The pale woven rug keeps the stripe from sitting on anything louder than itself. Stripes like these live in [striped cotton and ticking](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/striped-cotton-and-ticking/), and more shapes wait among our [corner floor cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/corner-floor-cushions/).

## Swatch strip: the corner by the hour

- Cornflower blue — #6F8FC9 — The stripe's blue, pulled from the prints; truest at midday by the window
- Ivory — #F3EEE2 — Ground of the stripe and the welt; stays pale after the lamp goes on
- Honey oak — #C49A6C — Wall shelf and lamp stem; warms under lamplight while the blue cools
- Monstera green — #3F6B45 — The only green, standing at the edge of the grouping
- Woven oat — #DCCFB8 — The rug that keeps the floor quieter than the stripe

## Two new seats, one shade grayer than the rest

A buyer in the US had a corner sofa set of seats, backs, arms and a quarter-round piece, all in a smoke color. The package burst open in transit and the two big seat cushions were damaged, so the workshop remade them.

The new seats came out a grayer smoke than the khaki-leaning backs, arms and semicircle. The workshop put it down to tone variation at the fabric mill; a new roll is never quite the old roll. The buyer asked for the rest of the set to match the new seats, and the workshop agreed to remake it, with the shipping cost split.

A seam is a promise, and so is a color. When pieces are replaced, the whole visible set should come from one batch, or daylight will point out the difference every morning. More in [dye lots and matching later](https://cushionguide.com/guides/dye-lots-matching-cushions-later/).

## Buyer questions: playrooms, cloud couches, a tired insert

**A common question:** Is the floor sofa all right for a toddler's playroom, and are flame retardants used?

**The workshop's answer:** Many buyers put it in playrooms. The fabrics come from OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified mills, and the standard fabric is not treated with flame retardants. If a room calls for a flame-retardant fabric, the workshop has other fabrics that are.

**A common question:** I'd like a soft 'cloud couch' built from stacked tufted cushions. Can you make it, and is there a base?

**The workshop's answer:** The cushions can be made to any exact measurements in high-density memory foam, and the covers are washable. The workshop does not make wooden bases, so the frame is yours to source.

**A common question:** Is there any warranty if an insert wears out within a year?

**The workshop's answer:** In one case a sofa insert's lining was pilling and leaking foam bits within a year. The workshop sent a replacement for the cost of shipping only.

> A cornflower blue that looks like spring sky at 9 a.m. can look like slate under a warm lamp at 9 p.m. Only the light changed.

> **Tailor's margin:** Buy the cushion once, cry once: check a blue swatch at a noon window and again under your evening lamps.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Why does a blue cushion look gray in the evening?

Warm bulbs throw yellowish light, and yellow dulls blue. The fabric has not changed; the light has. Check a blue swatch by a window at midday, then again under your own lamps, before you settle on a shade.

### How do I pick a stripe color to go with art above a floor cushion?

Pull one color from the prints, not all of them. Here the cornflower comes from the abstracts, including the leaf cut-out, so the pouf and the art read as one grouping. Hold the swatch against the frames in daylight.

### What piping color suits a striped corner pouf?

Usually the stripe's lighter color. An ivory welt here traces the seat curve against the blue and stays visible after dark, when the blue sinks. A blue cord would disappear into the stripe by evening.

### Can one damaged cushion be replaced to match the rest of a set?

It can be remade, but a new roll of fabric may differ in tone from the old one. If the difference shows, ask about remaking every visible piece from one batch, as one US buyer did with a corner set.
