# A coral stripe chair cushion with ties, read in three kinds of light

*Coral is a breakfast color. In this kitchen it gets the full golden hour of morning coffee, and it earns every minute of it.*

> **The quick answer:** Choose a chair cushion color in the light the chair actually lives in, and judge it on a real swatch, not a screen. This coral and cream stripe glows in golden morning sun, warms the honey pine and matches the faded red of the rug. Ties cut from the same stripe hold the boxed pad to both back posts so it stays put.

## Zippers, tapers and firm foam: three kitchen questions

**A common question:** Are zippers extra, and which side of the cushion do they go on?

**The workshop's answer:** Zippers come standard on every cover at no extra charge. The zipper goes on the back edge, the one against the wall, window or chair back, so it stays out of sight. When an order doesn't make that clear, the workshop asks; on one 23 5/8 x 17 3/4 in (60 x 45 cm) cushion it went on the longer edge.

**A common question:** My wooden chair seats are wider at the front than at the back. Can you make pads that fit?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, tapered chair cushions are no problem. Order through the chair cushion listing and upload a simple sketch or photo showing the front width, the back width and the depth, and the shape is cut to match.

**A common question:** Do you make firm replacement pads for dining chairs?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, in any size and thickness. They are filled with 2 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³) high-resilience foam that stays firm and holds its shape. Send length x width x thickness and how many you need, and the workshop will quote.

## One coral, three lights

| Light | What the coral does | What the cream does |
|---|---|---|
| Golden morning sun | Warms toward peach and glows against honey pine | Reads as soft ivory |
| Warm lamplight at supper | Deepens toward brick | Turns buttery |
| A cool phone screen | Can tip toward pink | Can look stark white |

## Why the light chose this color

Right, then. The light comes first, because the light picked this cushion.

The photograph was taken in golden morning sun. Coral in that light goes warm and a little peachy, and the honey pine of the ladder-back chair goes warmer still; the two flatter each other. The faded Persian rug on the wide pine floorboards carries the same worn red, which is where the coral came from in the first place.

The open white shelving is the chaperone. Plain white boards, stoneware bowls and plates. Without it, coral plus pine plus rug would drift toward sweet. With it, the kitchen stays crisp. The scrubbed pine table, the white mug with its spoon, the folded oatmeal linen napkin and the herb in terracotta on the sill say someone lives here and eats here.

Now move the same chair to supper under a warm bulb. Coral deepens toward brick, cream goes buttery, and the kitchen is still handsome. On a cool phone screen, though, that coral can read pink. Daylight is the judge; the screen is only a witness. The Pattern on [cushion color on screen versus daylight](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-color-screen-vs-daylight/) explains why, and [ordering fabric swatches](https://cushionguide.com/guides/fabric-swatches-before-ordering/) is the cure. What light does your kitchen get at breakfast?

**The ties.** Kitchen chairs are pulled out and pushed in all day, and an untied pad walks. These ties are cut from the same stripe and bowed around both back posts, so they hold the pad square and double as trim.

**The box.** The pad has upright sides and fills the seat to its edges like a tailored slipcover, with self piping running a straight line around it. On a stripe, a wandering welt shows from the doorway.

**The template.** Old ladder-back seats are rarely square. Trace yours first, as in the [paper template](https://cushionguide.com/guides/paper-template-for-custom-cushion/) Pattern.

## Pinned by Maggie: the breakfast chair

Five pins follow the morning light: the coral stripe pad, its bow ties, the ladder-back chair, the pine table with its mug, and the rug that supplied the color.

1. **Coral stripe pad**: Coral picks out the faded red in the rug and warms the honey pine.
2. **Fabric bow ties**: Ties cut from the same stripe hold the pad to the back posts so it doesn't slide.
3. **Ladder-back chair**: An old chair seat is rarely square, so a paper template is the safest way to measure.
4. **Pine table and mug**: The scrubbed table and morning mug set a lived-in farmhouse mood.
5. **Faded Persian rug**: Its worn reds are the source of the cushion color.

## Three pieces, one chair, one zipper that knew its place

A buyer got in touch about a lounge chair that needed three pieces: a headrest of 13 x 29 1/8 x 4 7/8 in (33 x 74 x 12.5 cm), a middle cushion of 23 5/8 x 17 3/4 x 3 in (60 x 45 x 7.5 cm), and a seat wider at the front than the back: 26 3/8 in (67 cm) across the front, 22 1/2 in (57 cm) across the back, 22 7/8 in (58 cm) deep.

The seat went in through the rectangular listing first. That is how you get a rectangle. It had to be reordered through the trapezoid listing with the sketch uploaded.

Then the workshop asked which edge of the middle cushion faces the chair back. The answer put the zipper on the 23 5/8 in (60 cm) edge, out of sight, and all three pieces shipped together. Tell the workshop which edge faces the wall or chair back, dear, and your zipper stays hidden. ## On the cutting table: the breakfast chair pad

| | |
|---|---|
| Product | Chair cushion with ties, boxed chair pad |
| Fabric | Striped cotton, coral and cream |
| Edge | Box edge, filled to the seat edges |
| Piping | Self piping |
| Fastening | Ties cut from the same stripe, bowed to both back posts |
| Zipper | On the back edge, facing the chair back |
| Foam | 2 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³) high-resilience foam |
| Measuring | Paper template for old or tapered seats |
| Best for | Farmhouse kitchens and breakfast nooks in morning sun |

> **Tailor's margin:** Tie a kitchen chair pad to both back posts, not one. A single tie lets the cushion swing sideways every time the chair is pulled out.

> Pick a chair cushion color in the light the chair lives in. Coral that glows peach at breakfast deepens toward brick under a warm bulb at supper.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Why does my cushion color look different in the evening?

Warm bulbs push reds and corals toward brick and turn cream buttery, while morning sun lifts them toward peach. Check a physical swatch on the chair in both lights before you commit to a color.

### Where should the ties go on a ladder-back chair cushion?

At the two back corners, knotted around the back posts. Ties cut from the cushion fabric hold the pad square when the chair is pulled out, and tied in bows they become part of the trim.

### Is a boxed chair pad better than a flat one?

A boxed pad has upright sides, so it fills the seat to its edges and looks tailored, like a slipcover. A flat knife-edge pad is thinner and softer at the edges. On a sturdy farmhouse chair, boxed reads neater.
