# A coral stripe window seat cushion, and the firm foam that keeps the view open

*Coral catches the eye first, then the golden hour on white stucco. What keeps this cushion so crisp across an arched ledge is hidden inside it, and that is where Élodie begins.*

> **The quick answer:** A window seat cushion on a deep window ledge needs only 3 to 4 in (8 to 10 cm) of firm foam. Every cushion uses high-resilience foam at about 2 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³), medium-firm, so the box edge stays straight and the sill line stays low. The 3 in thickness is the workshop's best seller; 4 in adds height where a ledge sits low.

## Before the reading: three questions about this kind of ledge

**A common question:** What does a custom window seat or bench cushion cost?

**The workshop's answer:** Price rises with size. Across real quotes, a small 12.5 x 30 in pad sits at the low end, mid-length seats such as 18 x 70 in or 24 x 58.5 in land in the middle, and long runs of 18 x 110 in or 24 x 102 in sit at the top. Send your exact dimensions for a quote.

**A common question:** How firm is your foam, and should I pick 3 in or 4 in?

**The workshop's answer:** Every cushion uses about 2 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³) high-resilience foam, medium-firm. It supports well and holds its shape for years without sagging or flattening, yet still feels comfortable to sit on. The 3 in thickness is the best seller.

**A common question:** My ledge runs longer than 78 in (200 cm). Can you still make it to my exact size?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Everything is made to exact measurements, and going past 78 in (200 cm) is no problem. For a rectangle, pick the size range that covers your numbers and type the exact size in the personalization box. Angled shapes go on the custom-shape listing, with the longest edge as the length and your drawing uploaded.

## What sits inside the coral stripe

Before the color, the ledge. In a thick-walled arched window the seat is not really a seat; it is a deep oak shelf, and people use it sideways, knees up, shoulders against the plaster. That posture asks for a firm cushion, not a plush one.

Inside this one is the same foam every cushion in the workshop gets: [high-resilience foam](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#high-resilience-foam) at about 2 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³), medium-firm. It supports well and keeps its shape for years without sagging or flattening. A soft core would dip where you sit most, and the coral bands would bow with it.

Thickness is the second decision. At 3 to 4 in (8 to 10 cm) the cushion stays low, so from across the room you still see olive leaves rather than a mattress. Go thicker and the seat starts to climb into the window it was built to frame. The [foam firmness finder](https://cushionguide.com/studio/foam-firmness-finder/) and the [window seat thickness pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/window-seat-cushion-thickness/) walk through the choice.

## Pinned by Élodie: coral at golden hour

Start at the terracotta pot on the right, then follow the pins down the coral band to the oak ledge and the seagrass basket on the limestone floor.

1. **trailing plant in terracotta**: Terracotta at one end and seagrass below repeat the coral's warmth.
2. **coral stripe band**: Coral against white stucco needs no pillows to feel finished.
3. **oak ledge**: Only the straight ledge sets the cushion shape; the arch above does not matter.
4. **seagrass basket**: A basket on the limestone floor grounds the long horizontal seat.
5. **olive grove view**: The low cushion keeps the view unobstructed from the room.

## Coral against stucco, oak and evening light

This is not orange and not pink. It is a coral with sunset in it, running in bands beside cream. At golden hour the stucco turns faintly apricot and the coral warms toward persimmon, so wall and stripe seem to breathe together. Let one color speak and the others listen: the coral speaks here, while the honey oak, the white plaster and the cream bands listen.

Look at the ends. A trailing plant in a terracotta pot sits at one side, a seagrass basket waits on the floor below, and both repeat the coral's warmth in earthier tones. That is why the seat needs no throw pillows. It already feels finished.

The arch distracts the eye, never the tape measure. The cushion runs dead straight because only the ledge shape matters; the curve above never touches the fabric. [Self piping](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#self-piping) in the same stripe traces the top edge, so the box reads as one clean block.

One caution, my friends. Cotton stripes are lovely indoors in a sunny window like this one. On a covered terrace I would choose an outdoor-rated stripe instead. The [striped cotton and ticking shelf](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/striped-cotton-and-ticking/) shows the difference, and the [window seat cushion atlas](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/window-seat-cushions/) holds more ledges like this. What color does your wall turn at six in the evening?

## Two bolsters, ordered one step late

A buyer in the US wrote to the workshop about a long window seat: 21 x 82 in (53 x 208 cm), 5 in (13 cm) thick, one fabric for the cover and a chosen shade for the piping. They had seen matching bolsters in other buyers' reviews and wanted a pair of their own, each 6 x 20 in (15 x 51 cm).

There was no bolster listing at the time. So the seat was ordered first, and the workshop then sent a custom link for the two bolsters in the same fabric and piping.

They chose 5 in; on an olive-view ledge like this I would stay at 3 or 4. The lesson travels well, though: order bolsters together with the cushion so fabric and piping match exactly. The [bolster pillow atlas](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bolster-pillows/) shows the sizes.

## On the cutting table: the coral ledge cushion

| | |
|---|---|
| Piece | Window seat cushion for a deep arched-window ledge |
| Shape | Straight rectangle cut to the oak ledge, not the arch |
| Fabric | Coral-orange and cream striped cotton |
| Edge | Box edge |
| Piping | Self piping in the same stripe |
| Thickness | 3 to 4 in (8 to 10 cm); 3 in is the best seller |
| Foam | High-resilience, about 2 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³), medium-firm |
| Pairs with | Terracotta, seagrass, white stucco, honey oak |
| Best for | Sunny indoor ledges; an outdoor-rated stripe for a covered terrace |

> **Tailor's margin:** Measure the ledge, not the arch: a window seat cushion follows the flat oak shelf even when the window above it curves.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Does an arched window need an arched cushion?

No. The cushion follows the flat ledge it sits on, so an arched window still takes a straight rectangle. Measure the ledge wall to wall and front to back; the curve above never touches the cushion.

### Is striped cotton a sensible choice for a sunny indoor window seat?

Indoors, yes. Cotton stripes keep crisp lines and suit a bright window. For a covered terrace or porch, choose an outdoor-rated striped fabric instead, because that seat will meet damp air and weather that cotton is not made for.

### Why keep a ledge cushion to 3 or 4 inches thick?

On a deep ledge the cushion is a perch, not a sofa. At 3 to 4 in (8 to 10 cm) of medium-firm foam it supports sideways sitting and keeps the sill line low, so the view from the room stays open.
