# Three striped box cushions stacked in coral, navy and rose, and the piping decision behind them

*Three stripes, one cream ground, and a piping choice that decides whether a set of dining chair cushions looks tailored or merely bought. Maggie makes the call.*

> **The quick answer:** For striped dining chair cushions, self piping cut from the same stripe gives the calmest, most tailored edge, because the outline melts into the pattern. These three box cushions, wide coral, fine navy pencil and medium dusty rose on one cream ground, are self piped with the stripes running down the gusset in line with the top. Contrast piping outlines harder; no piping reads softer.

## Pinned by Maggie: three stripes and a corner

Four pins, one per stripe and one on the self-piped corner where the line is decided.

1. **Wide coral stripe**: A wide coral band on cream sets the warmest note in the trio.
2. **Navy pencil stripe**: A fine navy line calms the two warmer stripes either side.
3. **Dusty rose stripe**: A medium-width rose bridges the coral and the navy.
4. **Self-piped corner**: Each cushion is piped in its own stripe for a neat, color-matched edge.

## Three stripes, one cream ground

Stack three cushions and you learn more in ten seconds than in ten minutes of scrolling swatches.

Here's the trio. A **wide coral band** on cream, the warmest note. A **fine navy pencil stripe**, the calm one in the middle. A **medium dusty rose**, which bridges the two. They share one cream ground, and that's the whole trick: fix the ground color, vary only the stripe width and hue, and the set mixes without a fight. Put one on each chair around a table and they still read as a family. Add ties and you have [dining chair cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/dining-chair-cushions/) that stay put, too.

Now the part I care about. Each cushion is **boxed with self piping** cut from its own stripe, and the stripes turn down the gusset in line with the top. That's what separates tailored from bought. If the stripe on the side jogs even a little from the stripe on top, the eye catches it from across the room. A straight welt is a kind of honesty, and on stripes there's nowhere to hide.

I'll own a mistake: years ago I piped a coral stripe in navy because the two swatches looked smart side by side. On the chair it drew a hard box around a cushion that was already busy. Self piping would have let the stripe do the talking.

The warm greige studio sweep keeps the cream from turning stark. The cotton stripes live on the [striped cotton and ticking](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/striped-cotton-and-ticking/) shelf. For the whole argument, read [matching, contrast or no piping](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-piping-matching-contrast-none/) and [which way a stripe should run](https://cushionguide.com/guides/striped-cushion-stripe-direction/). Which stripe would you give the chair at the head of your table?

## Self, contrast or none: what each does to a striped edge

| Piping choice | What happens to the line | Pick it when |
|---|---|---|
| Self piping, cut from the stripe | The edge melts into the pattern; the box reads as one clean block | The stripe is bold and you want the set calm |
| Contrast piping, such as navy on coral | A hard outline frames every seat | The fabric is plain or the chairs need a crisp edge |
| No piping | A softer, more casual seam | The room is relaxed and a little undone is the point |

## Five inches thick, and nobody guessed

A parent in the US was replacing the cushions on an armchair headed for a nursery. Before writing to the workshop, they measured the old cushions and found them about 5 in (13 cm) thick. So the order read: seat 20 x 22 x 5 in (51 x 56 x 13 cm), back 21 x 27 x 5 in (53 x 69 x 13 cm).

The workshop explained the fiber and silicone-ball filling and quoted both pieces. The parent ordered one fabric-sample purchase to see several colors side by side. When the first sample pack couldn't be traced, the shop sent a new one.

Measure the thickness of the cushions you're replacing, dear. Comfort lives in that number, and it's the one people forget. For the seat itself, the [chair cushion builder](https://cushionguide.com/studio/chair-cushion-builder/) takes it from there.

## Buyer questions: rattan curves, a lone ottoman, and covers for foam you already own

**A common question:** I have a vintage barrel-back rattan chair with a rounded back. Can you make a cushion for it?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, semicircular back and all. Send the width and depth, for example 17 x 18 in (43 x 46 cm), plus a clear photo taken from directly above that shows the whole seat. A tracing or paper template of the seat is even better for getting the curve right.

**A common question:** Can I order only the ottoman from the corner floor sofa set?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. The ottoman is sold on its own, and it can also come with a straight backrest and a metal bar. It measures 39 x 39 in (99 x 99 cm).

**A common question:** I already have the foam. Could you make just the zippered covers?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Send your foam sizes. One buyer had covers made with extra-strong zippers for a porch swing, a 55.25 x 27.75 x 4 in (140 x 70.5 x 10 cm) seat and a 50 x 13 x 4 in (127 x 33 x 10 cm) back pad, with no inserts.

## On the cutting table: the striped trio

| | |
|---|---|
| Cushions | Three square box cushions, stacked |
| Fabric | Striped cotton on a shared cream ground (N12, N06, N18) |
| Stripes | Wide coral, fine navy pencil, medium dusty rose |
| Piping | Self piping, cut from each cushion's own stripe |
| Gusset | Stripes turned down the side in line with the top |
| Backdrop | Warm greige studio sweep |
| Set rule | Fix the ground color; vary stripe width and hue |
| Best for | Dining chairs, kitchen stools and mixed chair sets |

> On striped chair cushions, self piping cut from the same stripe keeps the edge calm; navy piping on a coral stripe draws a hard box around it.

> **Tailor's margin:** Before ordering replacement chair cushions, measure how thick the old ones are. Swap a 5 in cushion for a thinner one and the whole chair sits differently.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Can dining chairs around one table wear different stripes?

Yes, if the stripes share a ground color. Keep the cream or white the same and change only the stripe width and hue; coral, navy and rose on one cream ground look like a set rather than a mix-up.

### Should the stripes on a box cushion continue down the sides?

For a tailored look, yes. The stripe should turn down the gusset in line with the stripe on top. If it jogs at the seam, the mismatch shows from across the room every time you walk in.

### Is contrast piping a mistake on a patterned fabric?

Not always, but it adds a second line to a fabric that already has plenty. On busy stripes, self piping usually looks cleaner. Save contrast piping for plain fabrics, where the outline gives the cushion its shape.
