# A custom bench cushion in cobalt velvet, and the props around it

*Blue against terracotta, softened with pink and cream. Callum's field notes on a covered terrace bench, and how to copy the styling without copying the weather risk.*

> **The quick answer:** A custom bench cushion in cobalt velvet with ivory piping suits a covered terrace with teak and terracotta, because blue sits opposite orange on the color wheel and the pale piping ties it to the wall. Style it with two loose pillows leaning on the wall instead of a fixed back cushion. Velvet is an indoor fabric, so keep it under a solid roof.

## Field notes: a blue bench on a warm terrace

Cobalt and terracotta sit nearly opposite on the color wheel. That's the whole trick in this photo, and it's an old one on the water too: blue hull, orange buoy, you see both a mile off.

Logged from the frame:

- One solid teak bench, orange-brown in strong sun.
- Terracotta floor tiles. A limewashed wall behind.
- One box cushion in cobalt velvet, piped in ivory.
- Two pillows leaning on the wall: cream linen, dusty pink velvet.
- One open book at the far end.

Now the weather report. This terrace is covered, and that matters more than any color choice. Velvet is an indoor upholstery fabric, and rain doesn't negotiate. Under a solid roof, brought inside when a storm comes in sideways, a [velvet bench cushion](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/velvet/) will do fine. On an open patio, friend, I'd put you in [outdoor acrylic](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/outdoor-acrylic/), and I'd have you read [indoor cushions on a covered porch](https://cushionguide.com/guides/indoor-cushions-covered-porch/) first.

## Pinned by Callum: the cobalt velvet bench

Five pins, from the ivory piped corner to the chunky teak leg the cushion leaves on show.

1. **Ivory piped corner**: Ivory piping on cobalt draws a crisp outline that stands out against the orange-brown teak.
2. **Cream linen pillow**: A plain pillow leans on the wall and gives a back rest without a fixed back cushion.
3. **Dusty pink velvet pillow**: Pink against cobalt is an unexpected pairing that softens the strong blue.
4. **Open book**: The book sits on the far end, showing the depth is right for sitting sideways.
5. **Teak leg**: The cushion sits flush with the end of the bench so the chunky leg shows.

## Ivory piping and two pillows: every prop has a job

**Ivory piping.** It draws a crisp outline around the blue and stands it off the orange teak. Take the piping color from your wall, not from the cushion: white wall, ivory welt. It costs nothing extra; the choices are laid out in [piping: matching, contrast or none](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-piping-matching-contrast-none/).

**Cream linen pillow.** Plain and self-piped, leaning on the wall. It gives you a backrest without a fixed back cushion, so the bench stays a bench. Sit facing out, or sideways with your feet up.

**Dusty pink velvet pillow.** Nobody expects pink beside cobalt. It softens the hard blue the way a pink evening sky softens a slate sea. One is plenty.

**Open book.** Left on the far end. It tells you the seat is deep enough to sit sideways and read.

**Teak leg.** The cushion stops flush with the end of the bench, so the chunky leg shows. An overhang would hide the best part of a solid bench.

To copy it on a warm-toned wooden bench: strong blue velvet, piping borrowed from the wall, two loose pillows, one of them a surprise. What color is the wall behind your bench?

## Two slim benches and the levers that set the price

A buyer got in touch about two matching benches: 52 1/2 x 17 1/2 in (133 x 44 cm) and 53 x 17 1/2 in (135 x 44 cm), each only 2 in (5 cm) high, in mint velvet with piping and a non-slip base.

The first quote was for tufted cushions filled with silicone fiber. The buyer wanted a plain top with no creases, and a plain top needs sponge, which costs more. Then cheaper quotes turned up elsewhere. So the shop moved two levers: 22-density sponge instead of the standard 28, and a more affordable velvet. The look stayed plain and the price came down.

Write it in the log. Tufted fiber-filled pads cost less than smooth foam ones, and foam density and fabric grade are where the savings live. The [foam firmness finder](https://cushionguide.com/studio/foam-firmness-finder/) shows what a lower density changes, and the [bench cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bench-cushions/) atlas covers the rest.

## The measurement table, in pencil

| | |
|---|---|
| Product | Box bench cushion, flush with the bench end |
| Fabric | Cobalt blue velvet |
| Piping | Ivory contrast piping, no extra charge |
| Plain top | Seating sponge: 28 density standard, 22 density budget |
| Tufted option | Silicone-fiber fill, the lower-cost route |
| Base | Non-slip base on request |
| Exposure | Covered terrace only; bring inside for storms |
| Best for | Teak and oak benches in warm-toned spaces |

## Buyer questions: piping, exact sizes and a color that shifted

**A common question:** Is piping extra, and can it be a different color from the cushion?

**The workshop's answer:** Piping costs nothing extra, and a contrasting color is free too; write the piping code in the personalization. Single piping is standard and double piping can be requested. Choose the same code for cushion and piping and the piping blends in instead of contrasting.

**A common question:** I picked a size range that's a little off. Can you still make it to my exact measurements?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. The range you choose doesn't set the cut; the cushion is made to the exact size you confirm, such as 35 1/2 x 20 1/2 in (90 x 52 cm) or 15 3/4 x 93 1/4 in (40 x 237 cm). If what you paid already covers that size, just message the corrected dimensions before production starts.

**A common question:** Two photos of the same fabric code look different, one warm and one cool. Which is true to life?

**The workshop's answer:** Lighting, camera angle and screens all push undertones warmer or cooler, so one code often looks different across photos and the color chart. The shop took a fresh close-up of the actual fabric in front of them so the buyer could see the real color.

> **Tailor's margin:** Velvet on a terrace needs a solid roof overhead. If rain can reach the bench sideways, bring the cushion inside.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Can a velvet bench cushion go outdoors?

Only under a solid roof, and even then bring it in when rain blows sideways. Velvet is an upholstery fabric for dry rooms. For an open patio or porch, outdoor acrylic handles sun and showers far better.

### What piping color goes with a cobalt bench cushion?

Take it from the wall behind the bench. Ivory or cream piping on cobalt draws a crisp outline and links the cushion to a white or limewashed wall. Same-color piping blends in for a quieter, more tailored look.

### Do I need a back cushion on a bench against a wall?

Not always. Two loose pillows leaning on the wall give a backrest while keeping the bench flexible, so you can sit facing out or sideways. A fixed back cushion suits a bench used mostly for long, upright sitting.

### How can I lower the cost of a custom bench cushion?

Choose tufted fiber fill over a plain foam top, pick the lower sponge density, or choose a more affordable fabric grade. One buyer with two slim benches used the last two levers and kept the plain, crease-free look.
