# A cobalt V-berth boat cushion with ivory piping, read in cabin light

*Blue is a hard color to buy for a boat. The cabin light shifts every hour, and a phone screen shifts it again.*

> **The quick answer:** A V-berth boat cushion should follow the hull's taper, and splitting it into a main piece plus a separate bow infill lets you lift the small piece to reach the lockers below. This one is cobalt linen-look with ivory piping. Blue changes character between cabin daylight, warm lamps and screens, so judge the fabric in daylight on board before you order.

![Cobalt blue linen-look V-berth cushion with ivory piping in a white boat cabin with teak trim, chart and coiled rope](https://cushionguide.com/media/boat-and-rv-cushions/cobalt-v-berth-boat-cushion-ivory-piping-cabin-1600.webp "A forward cabin V-berth made in two pieces, a large tapered base and a separate bow infill, both piped in ivory.")

## Pinned by Callum: five marks in the forward cabin

Five pins mark the bow infill, the folded chart, the coiled rope, the ivory piping and the brass porthole above the berth.

1. **Bow infill piece**: The narrow bow end is a separate piece, easier to lift for the lockers below.
2. **Nautical chart**: One simple prop says 'boat' without clutter.
3. **Coiled rope**: Natural rope brings warmth against the cobalt.
4. **Ivory piping**: Classic navy-and-white outlines the tapered shape.
5. **Brass porthole**: A warm metal highlight above the cool blue berth.

## The plate: tapered berth, two pieces, one blue

A V-berth follows the hull, and the hull doesn't care about rectangles. So this [boat cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/boat-and-rv-cushions/) is cut as a tapering shape with a separate infill at the narrow bow end. Lift the small piece and you're into the lockers without hauling the whole berth up. On a boat, access is comfort.

The fabric is cobalt [linen-look](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/linen-look-fabrics/), piped in ivory. Navy and white is the oldest color scheme on the water for a reason: it reads crisp in bright light. The ivory welt traces the taper, so the shape stays legible even when the cabin goes dim.

Everything else is spare. A folded chart and a coil of natural rope say boat without clutter, and the rope brings warmth against the cobalt. The brass porthole adds one warm highlight above all that cool blue. Varnished teak trim and white tongue-and-groove do the rest.

## Morning, evening and the phone: three blues

Here's the part people learn the hard way. That cobalt is not one color. It's three.

In morning daylight through the porthole it reads clean and bright against the white paneling. By evening, under a warm cabin lamp, the same blue drops toward navy and the ivory piping turns cream. On a phone screen it can land almost anywhere.

So judge fabric where it will live. Hold the swatch against the teak and the hull lining in daylight on board, then again at dusk with the lamps on. Daylight is the honest one. The Pattern on [screen versus daylight color](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-color-screen-vs-daylight/) explains the [metamerism](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#metamerism) behind it, friend, and the [swatch Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/fabric-swatches-before-ordering/) covers samples before ordering.

## A skoolie bed, measured after the build

A buyer building a school bus conversion wrote to the workshop about a sofa that pulls out into a double bed. It needed two cushions, each 75 x 26 1/2 in (191 x 67 cm), ideally in deep green linen.

The workshop quoted one and both, noted that linen and velvet came at the same price, and sent its linen color chart. Then the buyer did the smart thing and held off ordering until the bed frame was built, so the measurements would be exact.

Conversion vehicles rarely match their plans, and boats are no different. Build the frame, then measure. The [V-berth templates Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/boat-cushion-templates-v-berth/) and the [van and skoolie cushion sketches](https://cushionguide.com/concepts/van-conversion-and-skoolie-cushions/) take it from there.

## Buyer questions: stripes outdoors, short pieces, odd size ranges

**A common question:** Is there a striped fabric I can use for outdoor cushions?

**The workshop's answer:** Not in the N-series stripes: those are 100% cotton and indoor-only, and that range has no two-color outdoor combinations. For a striped look outdoors, the outdoor charts include striped fabrics such as V-38, which is water-repellent and UV-resistant.

**A common question:** One of my cushions arrived shorter than I wanted. Will it be remade?

**The workshop's answer:** The workshop first checks it against the schematic you approved before production. In one case the approved dimensions were 23 in (58 cm) shorter on one piece, and the workshop offered to make the correct length if the buyer covered the production cost of the new piece.

**A common question:** My bench measurements don't fit the width and length ranges on the listing. Which do I pick?

**The workshop's answer:** Select them the other way round, for example 16 1/2 in (42 cm) as the width range and 50 in (127 cm) as the length range. What matters is that the order goes through at the right price. Then write your real measurements in Add Personalization, and the cushion is made to them.

> **Tailor's margin:** Split a V-berth cushion into a tapered main piece and a small bow infill. Lifting the infill opens the lockers without moving the berth.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Why is a V-berth cushion made in two pieces?

The berth tapers toward the bow, and lockers sit underneath. A separate bow infill lifts out on its own, so you reach storage without pulling up the whole cushion, and each piece is easier to clean and carry.

### Does ivory piping suit a cobalt or navy boat cushion?

Ivory is a touch softer than pure white and sits well beside varnished teak and white tongue-and-groove. It still gives the classic navy-and-white outline that keeps a tapered shape readable in a dim cabin.

### How should I check a blue fabric for a boat cabin?

Look at the swatch in the cabin itself, in daylight and again under the evening lamps, beside the teak and the hull lining. Don't decide from a phone screen alone; a screen can show the same blue several ways.
