# A cobalt stripe chair cushion with ties, put through daily life

*Crumbs, paws, spilled coffee and a bright window. Maggie reads a deep striped box cushion on a pine study chair and says what everyday life will do to it.*

> **The quick answer:** A striped cotton chair cushion with ties holds up well to kids, pets and spills when the ties are knotted to the back posts and spills are blotted fast. A wide two-color stripe hides crumbs and paw marks better than plain cream. Strong sun is the real threat: saturated cobalt by a bright window softens over time, so flip the cushion now and then.

## Buyer questions: spindle seats and a lone ottoman

**A common question:** My dining chairs have spindle backs. How do I measure the seat so the cushion fits exactly?

**The workshop's answer:** Mark three widths and three depths on a photo of the chair: H1 the back width at the spindles, H2 the widest width of the seat, H3 the front width, then V1, V2 and V3 for the depth at the left, center and right. Six numbers such as 14.5, 17 and 14 in wide by 14.5, 15.5 and 13.5 in deep let the shop reproduce the seat shape accurately.

**A common question:** I bought the corner floor sofa secondhand. Can I order just its ottoman?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. The ottoman is sold on its own through a separate link, including to people who bought the sofa secondhand. It measures 39 x 39 in, and if it is paid for together with a sofa order, it can ship with the sofa.

**A common question:** Can I add a single ottoman to a floor sofa I bought months ago?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. The ottoman can be ordered by itself from the listing options, and when it is ordered alone it ships with its own metal bars. Buyers regularly add one to a sofa they bought months earlier.

## Four worries, asked in the same order every time

Every family asks the same four questions about a bright cushion, and they ask them in the same order.

**Will the kids wreck it?** Not this one. A wide cobalt-and-cream stripe is busy enough to swallow crumbs and pencil marks that would shout on a plain cream seat. The [box edge](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#boxed-edge) is deep, so small sneakers bump the gusset, not the top.

**What about the dog?** Striped cotton is a flat weave with no pile, so hair brushes off instead of burrowing in. Claws are another story; no woven cotton enjoys them. If the dog has claimed the chair, read the [pet-friendly cushion fabric](https://cushionguide.com/guides/pet-friendly-cushion-fabric/) notes before you pick a cloth.

**And the coffee?** Blot first, rub never. The right order of first aid matters more than whatever bottle you grab, and it is laid out in [cushion stain removal](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-stain-removal-first-aid/).

**The sun?** That's the real test, dear. A saturated cobalt beside a bright study window will soften over the seasons, and the blue shows it long before the cream does. Flip the cushion now and then so both faces age together.

Which of the four lives at your house?

## Pinned by Maggie

Five pins, from the navy tie bow to the deep striped gusset that makes a plain pine chair look upholstered.

1. **Navy tie bow**: Navy ties pick up the darker blue of the stripe and the vase on the shelf.
2. **Ladder bookshelf**: A busy shelf of spines is balanced by one strong, simple stripe.
3. **Rattan pendant**: Woven rattan warms the cool blue from above.
4. **Ochre linen napkin**: Ochre is blue's warm opposite and keeps the stripe from feeling cold.
5. **Deep striped gusset**: A tall box makes a basic pine chair look almost upholstered.

## One loud stripe beside a crowded bookshelf

Right, then. The photograph.

The chair is plain pine, a ladder-back you'd find in any farmhouse kitchen. The cushion is what makes it look upholstered. Its box is deep, close to the height of the seat frame, and self piping cut from the same stripe keeps that tall edge crisp instead of letting it slump.

The stripe is broad and saturated, and it sits beside a ladder bookshelf crammed with spines. Busy next to busy usually fights. It doesn't here, because the stripe is simple: two colors, wide bands, one direction.

Now look for the repeats. Navy ties pick up the darker blue in the stripe, and a small cobalt vase on the shelf answers them. A navy gingham cloth is the only other blue, and it's small. Nearly everything else is warm on purpose: a woven rattan pendant overhead, an ochre linen napkin, pale pine, a stoneware mug by an open book, a jade plant in terracotta, one framed black-and-white print. Ochre sits opposite blue, and in soft afternoon light it keeps a cool stripe from turning chilly.

Copy one thing. When a strong stripe sits near a full bookcase, repeat its color once somewhere else in the room. A vase will do. ## Four seats, one quote, two clocks

A buyer in the US asked the workshop for one seat cushion, 26 x 30 in (66 x 76 cm). The shop quoted it, and then the order grew: three at 26 x 30 in and one at 30 x 30 in (76 x 76 cm), all in black or charcoal gray.

The shop quoted the four as one set and gave the timing as two separate numbers: 7 to 9 days to make, 3 to 5 days to deliver. That is how I like a set quoted. Production and delivery are different clocks, and anyone planning around a date deserves to see both.

Charcoal, for the record, is the other honest answer to kids and dogs. If you're ordering a mixed set, the [chair cushion builder](https://cushionguide.com/studio/chair-cushion-builder/) and the [dining chair pad measurements](https://cushionguide.com/guides/dining-chair-pad-measurements/) Pattern will keep your sizes straight.

> **Tailor's margin:** Measure a spindle-back seat six ways: back width at the spindles, widest width, front width, then depth at left, center and right.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Does a striped chair cushion show stains?

Less than a plain pale one. A wide two-color stripe breaks up crumbs, drips and paw marks, while solid cream shows every one. Blot spills straight away and treat the fabric gently rather than scrubbing it on the chair.

### Will cobalt fabric fade near a sunny window?

Any saturated cotton color softens in strong daily sun, and cobalt shows the change sooner than cream. Keep the chair out of all-day direct light if you can, and flip the cushion from time to time so both sides fade evenly.

### Can one set of chair cushions come in two sizes?

Yes. One set in this Reading mixed three 26 x 30 in cushions with one 30 x 30 in cushion in the same fabric. The shop quoted all four together and stated making time and delivery time separately.
