# A cobalt palm-print sunbed cushion, and why every prop on the terrace earned its place

*Strip a terrace down to what the wind can't take and you see what matters. Here that's one printed cushion, one white frame and four honest props.*

> **The quick answer:** A patterned sunbed cushion looks at home when its two colors come from the setting: one from the view, one from the walls. This two-piece cobalt and white palm print takes blue from the sea and white from the parapet, sits on a white aluminum frame, and has a thicker seat than back so the backrest tilts cleanly.

## Three questions off the deck

**A common question:** Do you have a waterproof, spill-proof fabric for outdoor cushions?

**The workshop's answer:** Not waterproof, but water-repellent: there is a separate outdoor range with its own colors that sheds water, and the chart is sent on request. It can be used for tufted floor cushions and pallet-bench cushions too.

**A common question:** Can you replace a travel trailer cushion that's 6 ft by 31 in and at least 3 in thick?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. RV and trailer cushions are made to the measurements you send, here 72 x 31 in (183 x 79 cm) at 3 in (7.6 cm) or more, and the workshop sends a purchase link for that size.

**A common question:** Does linen cost more than the cotton-type fabric?

**The workshop's answer:** No. There is no price difference between linen and the other standard fabric, so choose on looks and on where the cushion will live.

## Reading the terrace, prop by prop

Sun like this bleaches everything that isn't meant to be there. What's left on this roof terrace was chosen, and it shows.

Start with the frame. White aluminum. It doesn't fight the print, it won't rust in salt air, and it hands all the attention to the cobalt. A teak frame would warm things up, but it would also start a second conversation.

The cushion comes in two pieces. A thicker seat takes the weight; a separate back lets the backrest tilt without folding the fabric at the hinge. Self piping and a straight box edge keep the foot of the pad neat. That's how a [chaise lounge cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/chaise-and-sunbed-cushions/) should behave: tidy at every angle.

Now the props. The whitewashed parapet gives the white half of the print somewhere to come from. The sea behind gives the cobalt its reason. Terracotta tile underfoot puts warmth back in, so all that blue doesn't feel cold once the sun drops. The potted succulents are the only green, small and tough, the kind of plant that shrugs at a week of hot wind. Nothing up here needs rescuing when the weather turns.

Copy it with one rule, friend: take one color of your print from the view and one from the walls. On a patio with a gray fence and a green lawn, that's a gray-and-green print, not cobalt. Browse [outdoor acrylic](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/outdoor-acrylic/) with that rule in hand, and see [patio and porch cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/patio-and-porch-cushions/) for the rest of the deck.

What's the one color your view gives you for free?

## Pinned by Callum, head to foot

Five pins, from the separate back cushion down to the sea that explains the blue.

1. **Back cushion**: A separate back piece lets the backrest tilt without bunching the fabric.
2. **Seat cushion**: The seat is thicker than the back for more comfort where the weight is.
3. **Boxed front edge**: Self piping and a straight box edge keep the long pad neat at the foot.
4. **Aluminum frame**: A white frame keeps all attention on the cobalt print.
5. **Sea view**: Deep blue water behind is the reason cobalt feels right here.

## Four moves to copy the terrace

1. Pick a two-color print: one color from the view, one from the walls.
2. Keep the frame in the print's lighter color so the pattern leads.
3. Add one warm material underfoot, such as tile, brick or a jute rug, to balance cool blues.
4. Order seat and back as two pieces, the seat thicker, so the backrest tilts clean.

## A lift-up RV lid and a strap nobody needed

An RV owner wrote in needing a 28.75 x 17 in (73 x 43 cm) cushion for a bench whose lid lifts for storage, in fabric T-314. They asked for a strap to hold it to the lid.

The workshop suggested something tidier: a non-slip fabric base, which holds the cushion in place without straps, and cream piping for a soft contrast against T-314. The buyer sent a drawing and took both suggestions.

Straps on a lift-up lid snag, fray and swing loose every time you reach for the jumper cables. A grippy underside just sits there and works. The same thinking fits any pad that rides on a lid; see [storage bench cushions on hinged lids](https://cushionguide.com/guides/storage-bench-cushion-hinged-lid/).

> **Tailor's margin:** Order a sunbed cushion as two pieces, a thicker seat and a separate back, and the backrest tilts without folding the fabric at the hinge.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Why is a sunbed cushion made in two pieces?

A separate back lets the backrest tilt without folding or bunching the fabric where the frame hinges. It also lets the seat be thicker than the back, which puts the comfort where the weight is.

### What color sunbed cushion suits a white lounger frame?

Almost any print, because white steps back. Pick two colors from the setting, one from the view and one from the walls, and the frame will let the pattern lead instead of competing with it.

### Does a patterned lounger cushion need contrast piping?

Not usually. Self piping, cut from the same print, gives the box edge a clean line without adding a third color. Contrast piping earns its place on plain fabrics, where the outline has something to say.

### How do I keep an outdoor cushion from sliding off a lift-up lid?

Ask for a non-slip base on the underside of the cover. It grips the lid without straps, so nothing snags, frays or hangs loose when the lid opens for storage.
