# A cobalt blue stripe window seat cushion, and the foam that keeps its lines straight

*Élodie's notebook on a 4 inch cobalt stripe box in an all-white room: why firm foam matters to a stripe, what fills the back pillows, and how to draw a curved seat.*

> **The quick answer:** A window seat cushion like this cobalt stripe box works best on firm, high-density foam about 4 in (10 cm) thick, because firm foam keeps the box band flat and the stripes running straight. Back pillows are different: shredded foam in a separate zippered insert gives a softer lean. Settle the firmness first, then the thickness.

![Cobalt blue and white striped box cushion with self piping on a white paneled window seat with pampas and books](https://cushionguide.com/media/window-seat-cushions/cobalt-blue-stripe-box-cushion-white-window-seat-1600.webp "A saturated cobalt stripe gives an all-white window seat a strong seaside note with no other styling.")

## Notebook: a blue that becomes the whole room

Cobalt is not navy. Navy recedes; cobalt steps forward and speaks. In an all-white room, on a white paneled seat over a pale wood floor, this cobalt stripe becomes the entire color scheme, and it needs no help.

The light is flat and bright, the kind that shows a blue exactly as it is. The styling is almost nothing: a single sand-colored pampas stem in a small cream vase, standing on a stack of white books at the far end. The books act as a tiny shelf without crowding the seat, and the pampas is the only soft thing beside all that blue.

Now look at the front band. The stripes run front to back, so along the 4 in (10 cm) box side they make a clean ladder, rung after rung. A ladder is a ruler, my friends. If the foam inside sagged or bulged, every rung would bend, and the eye would notice before anyone sat down. Firm foam is what keeps a stripe honest.

The front corner is self piped, so it stays sharp without adding a second color, and the white paneling below lets the cobalt carry the room alone.

One warning I give every time: blues shift more than most colors between a monitor and real cloth. Daylight never lies; your screen sometimes does. Get a sample before choosing between cobalt and a paler blue.

## Seat foam and back fill, side by side

| | Seat cushion | Back pillow |
|---|---|---|
| Fill | High-density foam, about 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³) as standard | Shredded foam, broken down on the workshop's own machine |
| Feel | Firm and level; holds a square box | Soft but supportive; shapes to your back |
| Why here | Keeps the 4 in (10 cm) front band flat so the stripes stay straight | Holds its shape against a pillow rail |
| Build | Box cushion with self piping | Separate insert in a zippered cover, washable at 86°F (30°C) on gentle |

## Pinned by Élodie

Five pins, from the single pampas stem to the paneled base that lets cobalt lead.

1. **pampas stem**: A single sand-colored stem is the only softness beside a strong blue.
2. **book stack**: Books at the far end act as a small shelf without crowding the seat.
3. **piped front corner**: Self piping keeps the corner sharp on a 4 in box.
4. **cobalt stripe band**: Stripes running front to back make a clean ladder along the front band.
5. **paneled base**: White paneling lets cobalt become the whole color scheme.

## A D-shaped seat, drawn as two simple shapes

A buyer messaged the workshop about a D-shaped window seat: two straight sides and an arched front. It measured about 67 in (170 cm) wide and 47 in (120 cm) deep, with straight sides of 20.5 in (52 cm) before the curve began.

The drawing they sent was the clever part. They described the seat as two shapes: a rectangle of about 64.5 x 21 in (164 x 53 cm), plus part of an arc cut from a circle 64.5 in (164 cm) across. That is geometry a tailor can draft without guessing.

The workshop sent a quote. When the buyer hesitated, the shop asked for their budget, to see what it could do.

For any curved seat, the same trick works. Describe the curve as simple shapes with known sizes, and it stops being a mystery.

## On the cutting table: the cobalt box, by the numbers

| | |
|---|---|
| Cushion | Rectangle box window seat cushion |
| Thickness | 4 in (10 cm) |
| Fabric | Striped cotton, cobalt blue and white |
| Stripe direction | Front to back, a ladder along the front band |
| Piping | Self piping |
| Seat foam | High-density, about 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³) as standard |
| Back pillows, if added | Shredded foam insert, zippered cover, 86°F (30°C) gentle wash |
| Backrest sizes | 14 to 15 in (36 to 38 cm) high; up to 63 in (160 cm) in one piece |
| Best for | Bright white rooms, coastal living rooms, reading windows |

## Buyer questions: back fill, the wrong listing and taller backs

**A common question:** What's inside the back pillows, and can the covers come off to be washed?

**The workshop's answer:** The back pillows are filled with shredded foam that the workshop breaks down into small pieces on its own machine, for a soft but supportive feel that holds its shape against a pillow rail. The filling is a separate insert and the cover zips, so it comes off to wash at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle. Nothing is sewn shut.

**A common question:** I ordered my shaped seat through the wrong listing and couldn't upload my sketch. What now?

**The workshop's answer:** The workshop cancels that order with a full refund and sends the correct custom-shape listing, whose checkout asks for your drawing. Ordering a shaped cushion on the rectangle or cover listing skips that upload step, and that is where production mistakes start.

**A common question:** Can the backrest cushions be a custom height or length, say under 15 in high or 63 in long?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. A backrest 14 to 15 in (36 to 38 cm) high is no problem; write the height in the personalization note. A 63 in (160 cm) backrest can be one piece or split to match the seat lengths, and a 3 in (7.5 cm) back can sit with a 2 in (5 cm) seat.

> **Tailor's margin:** Firm foam keeps a striped box cushion honest: if the 4 in front band sags, every stripe on the ladder bends with it.

## Questions buyers ask next

### How firm should a window seat cushion be?

Firm enough that the top stays level and the box edge stays square when you sit. High-density foam does that; a soft foam lets the front band sag, which shows on stripes first. Try the firmness finder before ordering.

### Is 4 inches thick enough for a window seat cushion?

Often, yes. This seat uses a 4 in (10 cm) box, which keeps a crisp profile. Measure from the seat deck to the window sill first, so the cushion leaves room below the glass and your feet still reach the floor.

### Why do the stripes run front to back on this window seat?

Front-to-back stripes make a ladder along the front band that reads cleanly from across the room and stays symmetrical end to end. Stripes running the length of the seat look more like a long awning.

### Should back pillows be as firm as the seat?

No. A seat needs firm foam to stay level, while a back pillow leans better with a softer fill. Shredded foam in a zippered insert gives a supportive but forgiving back that holds its shape against a pillow rail.
