# Clay pink velvet on cold stone: how a loggia bench cushion will age

*Questions first, the way buyers ask them, then my reading of the photo. Velvet under a roof can live a good life. It needs a few rules.*

> **The quick answer:** A velvet bench cushion can live on a covered loggia if it stays under the roof, out of blowing rain and hard daily sun. The pile will show pressure marks and shading, which is normal, and spills spot-clean easily. The zippered cover washes at 86°F (30°C) maximum. On an open terrace, choose outdoor fabric instead.

## Straight: backs, curves and a matching rest

**A common question:** How do I measure the height for back cushions on my futon or built-in seat? The numbers have me confused.

**The workshop's answer:** Measure the total back height from the frame, then subtract the seat cushion thickness, 4 in (10 cm) as standard, because the seat cushion fills the bottom of the back. One futon set was a 23 x 66 in (58 x 168 cm) seat with two 23 x 33 in (58 x 84 cm) backrests, plus side pillows.

**A common question:** Can you make a curved, wedge-shaped cushion for one section of a round rattan patio sofa?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, curved and angled shapes are made regularly. Along with the outer arc of 43 1/4 in (110 cm), the inner arc of 16 7/8 in (43 cm) and the two 19 5/8 in (50 cm) sides, the workshop needed the depth of the curve: the distance from the middle of a straight line across the inner edge to the arc, 11 3/8 in (29 cm), marked on a sketch. The buyer ordered one cushion to test the fit before ordering more.

**A common question:** Can you make a backrest to go with my bench cushion?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. For a 74 in (188 cm) bench, the workshop made a 23 5/8 x 74 x 4 in (60 x 188 x 10 cm) seat and a 15 3/4 x 74 x 4 in (40 x 188 x 10 cm) backrest, finished with a contrasting burgundy piping line.

## Pinned by Callum: five spots on the loggia

Five pins: the clay pink top, the piped front corner, the linen throw, the stone base and the kilim runner.

1. **Clay pink velvet top**: Clay pink sits halfway between the plaster wall and the floor tiles, so everything feels related.
2. **Piped front corner**: A neat piped corner over rough stone is the contrast that makes the cushion look tailored.
3. **Linen throw**: Crumpled linen adds a softer texture between smooth velvet and pitted stone.
4. **Stone base**: The cushion is as wide as the stone top, with no overhang to catch on.
5. **Kilim runner**: The rug's pattern repeats the pinks and reds at floor level.

## Reading the loggia: warm plaster, cold stone

A built-in stone bench is hard and holds the cold, even in late sun. So the cushion is generous in depth and cut to the full width of the stone top, with no overhang to catch a knee or a bag.

The color came from the room. Clay pink sits halfway between the warm plaster wall and the terracotta floor tiles, which is why it reads calm rather than pink for its own sake. The kilim runner repeats the pinks and reds at floor level, and a trailing vine softens the plaster above.

The front corner is the tailoring. A neat self-piped corner over rough-cut stone is the contrast that makes the seat look deliberate. Between smooth velvet and pitted stone, one crumpled oatmeal linen throw adds the middle texture. It is the only prop; the stone brings plenty.

To copy it on any masonry seat, photograph your wall and floor in daylight and pick the velvet that sits between them. The cloth is in the [velvet](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/velvet/) family, the frame in the [bench cushion atlas](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bench-cushions/), and more covered-terrace seats in [patio and porch cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/patio-and-porch-cushions/).

## The daily-life test: sun, rain, spills, sitters

Now the part a photo can't show: a year of use.

**Sun.** Indoor fabrics, velvet included, have limited UV resistance and can fade in strong, prolonged sun. The loggia roof is the whole deal here. Keep the cushion in shade for most of the day.

**Rain.** Rain doesn't negotiate. Velvet is not water-resistant, and under open sky the first failures are fading, mildew and soaked foam. Blowing rain under a shallow roof counts as open sky.

**Spills and sitters.** The workshop's velvet has a short, tight pile that spot-cleans easily. Pressure marks where people sit, and light and dark shading from the pile direction, are normal behavior, not defects. Brush the pile, steam from a distance, and never put an iron on it. The cover zips off and washes at 86°F (30°C) maximum on a gentle cycle, then air-dries.

How much roof is over your bench, friend?

## Twelve cushions and an honest answer

A buyer sent a sketch for a built-in lounge: twelve cushions, six seats and six backs, every one 4 in (10 cm) thick. The pieces were two at 54 3/8 x 30 3/4 in (138 x 78 cm), two at 54 3/8 x 15 3/4 in (138 x 40 cm), four at 39 3/8 x 23 5/8 in (100 x 60 cm) and four at 39 3/8 x 15 3/4 in (100 x 40 cm).

The workshop checked the widths and quoted the whole set. It came in at about double the buyer's budget, and a local maker had offered less. The workshop told them to go ahead locally.

What made that quick and fair was the sketch. Every piece had length, depth and thickness, so the two quotes could be compared line by line.

## On the cutting table: the loggia bench

| | |
|---|---|
| Bench | Built-in rough-cut stone bench on a covered loggia |
| Cushion | Box cushion cut to the full width of the stone, no overhang |
| Fabric | Clay pink velvet, short tight pile, indoor-only |
| Piping | Self piping on a crisp front corner |
| Exposure | Under the roof only; not for blowing rain or all-day sun |
| Normal wear | Pressure marks and light/dark shading from the pile |
| Care | Brush, spot-clean; zippered cover washes at 86°F (30°C) max |
| Back cushions | Frame back height minus the seat cushion thickness |
| Best for | Covered terraces, sunrooms and masonry window seats |

> **Tailor's margin:** Pricing a big cushion set? List every piece as length x depth x thickness in one table, so two quotes compare line by line.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Will a velvet cushion fade on a sunny terrace?

It can. Indoor fabrics, velvet included, have limited UV resistance and fade in strong, prolonged sun. A deep roof that keeps the cushion shaded for most of the day is what makes velvet workable outside.

### Why does one velvet cushion look like two different shades?

Velvet's pile is directional, so it looks lighter from one angle and darker from another. Pressure marks where people sit are the same effect. It is normal behavior for the cloth, not a defect, and brushing the pile helps it settle.

### Can I iron a velvet cushion cover?

Not on the pile. Steam it from a distance or brush it instead. The zippered cover can be machine washed at 86°F (30°C) maximum, inside out on a gentle cycle, then air-dried rather than tumbled.

### How do I choose a cushion color for a stone bench?

Photograph the wall and the floor around the bench in daylight and pick a shade that sits between them. Here clay pink falls halfway between warm plaster and terracotta tile, so the cushion looks as if it belongs to the house.
