# A cinnamon corduroy corner floor cushion, and the arithmetic of a nook

*Rust-colored cord under a mint canopy, a round rug below, three soft pillows on top. Pretty, yes. But what makes it work is size set against size.*

> **The quick answer:** A corner floor cushion is sized by the length of its two straight sides along the walls, not by its curved front. A 48 in (122 cm) side gives a front of about 75.4 in (192 cm). The kids' corner cushion comes 32, 39 or 47 in (80, 100 or 120 cm) per side, about 8 in (20 cm) thick.

## Size set against size

The old man who taught me used to say a cushion is either the right size or it is a rug. He meant proportion. Too thin for its footprint, and a cushion lies down on the floor and quits.

This one does not quit. It is a quarter circle in cinnamon corduroy, rust with a little brown in it, with a box front that curves from wall to wall. The round braided rug below picks up that curve and carries it across the floor, so the eye reads one gesture instead of two.

Look at the height. The pad stands tall enough that the cream star, the pink flower and the white cloud pillow sit on it like guests on a porch step, not like laundry on a floor. On a floor cushion, thickness is the seat height, and that depth of foam turns a corner into a seat.

Above it all, the mint canopy and its fairy lights. Mint sits nearly opposite rust on the color wheel, so each makes the other brighter, and the pink pillow keeps the peace between them. The plush mouse, the blocks and the open picture book tell you who owns the corner.

## Pinned on the photograph

Five spots I would tap with a pencil, from the canopy down to the rug.

1. **Cinnamon cord top**: Rust and mint sit near-opposite, so each makes the other look brighter.
2. **Curved box front**: The round rug below continues this curve onto the floor.
3. **Pink flower pillow**: Bridges the warm pad and the cool canopy.
4. **Mint round rug**: Repeats the canopy color at floor level.
5. **Mint canopy**: A colored net instead of white gives the nook a strong identity.

## Three corners, measured along the walls

Now, my friend, the arithmetic. The curved front is always about one and a half times the side, so tape the shape on the floor first.

| Side along each wall | Curved front, about | What it suits |
|---|---|---|
| 32 in (80 cm) | 50 in (128 cm) | A cozy seat for a 4-year-old |
| 39 in (100 cm) | 61 in (157 cm) | The best-selling kids' size |
| 47 in (120 cm) | 74 in (188 cm) | The largest kids' size: room to lie down and read with a toddler |

Sizes in between are made by ordering the next size up and writing the exact size in the note.

## Forty inches or forty-eight

A buyer in the US was choosing between two corner nook cushions for a reading corner: one at 40 in (102 cm) along each wall, one at 48 in (122 cm).

Eight inches does not sound like much. Along the curve it adds about 12.6 in (32 cm) of front edge, and nearly half again as much floor. They took the larger one, in emerald, and ordered it the way these are written: 48 x 48 in, one number for each wall. Side by side, never the diagonal. The [quarter-circle sizing pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/corner-floor-cushion-quarter-circle-size/) walks through it.

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** We're moving soon. Can I buy now and have you ship it later?

**The workshop's answer:** Often, yes: past buyers ordered early, gave their move-in date and asked the workshop to hold the order and time dispatch to arrive after they moved. Ask it to confirm that in writing, and you can order with your new address.

**A common question:** Do the sofa covers come off, and can they go in the washing machine?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Every cover comes off and can be machine-washed when it needs it, and the fabric spot-cleans easily between washes.

**A common question:** It arrived flat and doesn't look plush. How long until it fills out?

**The workshop's answer:** The pieces travel vacuum-compressed, so give them time: 36 to 48 hours to expand, at least 3 to 5 days to fill out fully, sometimes up to a week. Crease lines in corduroy from the packing need about a week to fade.

> Measure a corner floor cushion along each wall from the corner, never across the diagonal. A 48 x 48 in cushion has a curved front of about 75 in.

> **Tailor's margin:** Tape the quarter circle on the floor before you order. A 39 in side needs about 61 in of clear floor along the curve.

## Questions buyers ask next

### How do I measure a corner for a quarter-round floor cushion?

Start at the back corner and measure along each wall to where the cushion should stop. Those two lengths are the size, written side x side. Do not measure diagonally from the corner to the front.

### Can the kids' corner cushion be smaller than the standard sizes?

Yes. Order the next standard size up and write your exact size in the note. A 35 x 35 in (90 x 90 cm) cushion, for example, goes through the 39 in (100 cm) option.

### Is corduroy a sensible choice for a child's nook?

Indoors, yes: it is a plush cord with a removable, machine-washable cover. It has no water or UV resistance, so keep it away from open windows in rain and long hours of direct sun.
