# One cinnamon bouclé bench cushion: a breakfast nook, before and after

*Before: a bare oak bench by an arched window. After: one box cushion in a color lifted off the brick floor. Here is the arithmetic.*

> **The quick answer:** A custom bench cushion can remake a breakfast nook when its color comes from something already in the room, such as a terracotta floor, and its box edge stops just inside the bench rails. Send the bench's true length and depth, and match the fabric from a real photo and a code, not a screen.

![Cinnamon-brown bouclé box cushion on an oak bench with backrest, apricots on linen, olive grove through an arched window](https://cushionguide.com/media/bench-cushions/cinnamon-boucle-oak-breakfast-bench-cushion-tuscan-1600.webp "A warm bouclé pad softens a solid oak bench by an arched farmhouse window, and the brick floor and apricots repeat its tone.")

## Cover the cushion with your thumb

Cover the cushion with your thumb and read the photo again. An arched window onto an olive grove, a terracotta brick floor, an oak bench with a plank back. Handsome, and nobody sits there. That is the before.

Lift your thumb. One custom bench cushion in cinnamon [bouclé](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/boucle-and-teddy/), and the corner has a job: breakfast. The color was taken off the brick floor, so the seat looks rooted in the room instead of added to it. What color is already under your bench?

Now the geometry, partner, the part you can [measure](https://cushionguide.com/guides/how-to-measure-bench-for-cushion/). The box stops just inside the oak rails, so timber frames the seat, and it stops short of the plank back. The [self piping](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#self-piping) is cut from the same bouclé, so the edge shows as a soft ridge, not a drawn line. A bare timber back leaves all the comfort to the seat, which argues for a deeper box.

The props narrow the palette. Apricots on linen sit one step brighter than the cushion; the espresso cup is a dark full stop; dried wheat carries straw up to the plaster. The print and stool stay quiet; the striped flatweave is the only straight line against the curly loops.

For a [kitchen nook](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/kitchen-nook-cushions/), a mid-brown textured cloth hides a coffee drip far better than cream.

## The palette, before and after the cushion

- Cinnamon bouclé — #9b5a36 — The cushion; the loop tips read caramel in sun.
- Terracotta brick — #a65a3c — The floor, and the source of the cushion color.
- Weathered oak — #b48c5e — Bench rails and plank back, left bare on purpose.
- Apricot — #e39a5b — One step brighter than the seat, same orange family.
- Dried wheat — #d8bd84 — The bridge from cushion to wall.
- Plaster cream — #eee3cc — Walls and rug; everything sits on it.

## Pinned by Nate

Five pins, five decisions you could copy in your own nook.

1. **Cinnamon bouclé cushion**: The box stops just inside the oak rails so the frame edge still shows.
2. **Apricots on linen**: Fruit in the fabric's own orange family keeps the palette tight.
3. **Oak plank backrest**: A bare timber back leaves all the comfort to the seat, so a deeper box pays off.
4. **Dried wheat in glass jug**: Straw tones bridge the cushion and the plaster wall.
5. **Striped flatweave rug**: Straight stripes contrast the curly bouclé surface.

## The beige linen matched from a stranger's photo

A buyer wrote to the workshop after spotting a beige cushion in another customer's review photo. The workshop matched it to a color number in its linen range, and she ordered from the number, not the pixels.

Her [bench cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bench-cushions/) had to be long and narrow: 18 x 68 1/4 in (46 x 173 cm). I like that quarter inch: she wrote down what was there, not a rounder number. Pick the color from something real, then ask for the code. Measure twice; the fabric remembers.

## Three bench-cushion questions a makeover raises

**A common question:** Is piping extra, and can it be a different color from the cushion?

**The workshop's answer:** Piping is included at no charge, and a contrast color is free too. Write the piping code in your order note; if you leave it blank, the workshop checks with you before production, usually assuming a match.

**A common question:** I love the cushion in one of your photos. What color is it?

**The workshop's answer:** The workshop identifies fabric codes from its photos. The light gray banquette, the beige stripe and the terracotta jumbo cord each map to a code, so send the photo and ask.

**A common question:** I had an odd-shaped bench built into my dining nook. How do I get a cushion made for it?

**The workshop's answer:** Draw the shape, write the size on every edge and send a picture of the drawing. The workshop redraws it as a clean diagram to confirm. Trapezoid chair seats work the same way, with a photo of the chair.

## On the cutting table

| | |
|---|---|
| Cushion | Box cushion for a breakfast bench |
| Shape | Rectangle, set inside the bench rails |
| Fabric | Cinnamon bouclé, mid-brown loops |
| Piping | Self piping; contrast is also free |
| Foam | About 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³), fiber-wrapped |
| Measuring | True length and depth |
| Care | Vacuum the loops; zippered cover |
| Best for | Nooks with a bare timber back |

> **Tailor's margin:** Send the bench's true length to the 1/4 in. The workshop adds the fit allowance, so rounding down only buys you a gap at one end.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Can a bench cushion stop short of the backrest on purpose?

Yes. The cushion is cut to the numbers you send, so measure only the flat area you want covered. Send true measurements; the workshop adds its own fit allowance.

### Is bouclé practical on a kitchen bench?

A mid-brown bouclé hides drips and marks better than cream does. The looped surface holds crumbs, so plan on a quick vacuum, and keep a zippered cover so it comes off for washing.

### How thick should a cushion be on a hard timber bench?

On a timber bench, 4 in (10 cm) of firm foam wrapped in polyester fiber gives a plush, sofa-like look. A 5 in cushion feels the same but can look heavy on a smaller bench.
