# A chocolate window seat cushion in golden-hour light, with a tabby who approves

*On my grandmother's porch the cat claimed the sunniest cushion by four o'clock, every single day. This old pine window seat has the same look about it, and the low sun shows exactly why the brown was the right call.*

> **The quick answer:** Judge a window seat cushion color in the light you actually sit in, not on a screen. Low evening sun warms and deepens a brown and shows off a textured weave, while flat morning light makes the same fabric look cooler and plainer. A chocolate performance weave a shade or two darker than old pine hides pet wear at every hour.

## Pinned by Rosa: the cat, the lamp and the lid

Five pins follow the late sun across the seat, from the brass lamp on the sill to the pine box underneath.

1. **Chocolate pebble weave**: Deep brown sits naturally on honey pine and hides everyday wear.
2. **Curled-up tabby**: A firm, even seat gives a pet a flat place to sleep without sagging.
3. **Brass candlestick lamp**: A small brass lamp on the sill adds a glow for evening reading.
4. **Cream linen pillows**: Two pale pillows at the wall end mark where a person leans back.
5. **Pine storage box**: The cushion follows the lid exactly, leaving the old pine visible.

## Five o'clock on old pine

Some cushions only make sense at one hour of the day. This window seat cushion makes sense at all of them, but golden hour is when it shows off.

The cushion is a chocolate brown pebble weave from the [performance and pet-friendly fabrics](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/performance-and-pet-friendly/), with a box edge and self piping. It follows the lid of a rustic pine storage box exactly, so the old wood still shows below. Brown on honey pine is tone on tone. Nothing fights; the cushion looks like it came with the box.

Now watch the light. Low sun comes in sideways through the sash windows and rakes across the weave, so every little pebble throws a shadow. A flat fabric would go dull in the same light. In the morning, with the sun off the stone wall outside, that same brown reads cooler and closer to its swatch. Neither one is wrong, neighbor. They are two fabrics living in one cushion.

The props know their jobs. Two cream linen pillows sit at the wall end, marking where a person leans back and leaving the sunny half for the tabby. The brass candlestick lamp on the sill takes over when the light goes. The faded rug below repeats the warm browns, only softer. And the cat, curled up flat, tells you the seat is firm and even. Kids and dogs are the real quality control; cats are the inspectors.

The Atlas has more [window seat cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/window-seat-cushions/) and [reading nook cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/reading-nook-cushions/), and our note on [cushion color on screen versus daylight](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-color-screen-vs-daylight/) explains why your phone may show this brown as nearly black. What time of day does your window seat get the most use?

- Tabby gray — #8B8378 — The resident inspector

## One curved banquette, one toddler, one paper template

A family in the US wrote to the workshop about a curved built-in kitchen banquette, about 19 in (48 cm) deep, used every day by a toddler. They wanted one continuous cushion following the curve instead of three separate pieces, and they had already done the smartest thing anybody can do: they made a full-size paper template.

They asked for 3 in (8 cm) firm foam with a softer wrap, and a cover that could be washed or would shrug off stains. The workshop asked for photos of the template laid in place with the measurements written on it, especially where each curve begins. Those start points are where a curved cushion goes right or wrong.

Then it confirmed the build: its foam of about 2 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³) with a fiber wrap, and covers machine washable at 86°F (30°C). Firm enough for a climbing toddler, soft enough at the edge for a grown-up with a coffee. On a curve, a full-size template beats a tape measure every time, and our note on [paper templates for custom cushions](https://cushionguide.com/guides/paper-template-for-custom-cushion/) shows how to make one.

## Buyer questions: blues in the chart, a rush date and an odd shape

**A common question:** I'm after olive green, a dusty slate blue or other blue tones. Do you have those in velvet or in your patterned range?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. The velvet chart has olive green and dusty slate blue shades. In the patterned range, code P-66 has a blue-toned background and P-67 is a solid blue, and close-up photos of any code are available on request.

**A common question:** If I pay extra, can I have a custom window seat cushion in just a few days?

**The workshop's answer:** Not always. The workshop can make it, but when a buyer needed one only a few days out, it said plainly that the cushion would not arrive in time. If you have a date in mind, ask before you order.

**A common question:** Can you quote one rectangular cushion and one odd-shaped cushion, both in houndstooth?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. One such pair was quoted together, shipping included, in the workshop's best fabric and foam, with 10 days of processing that time. For the odd shape, the workshop asked for every side length and a photo of the space.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Why does a brown cushion look different in the evening?

Evening sun is warm and arrives low, so it deepens browns and reds and casts tiny shadows across any texture. Morning or north light is cooler and flatter, which pulls the same fabric back toward its swatch color.

### Is a dark window seat cushion practical with a cat or dog?

Yes. A mid-to-dark shade like chocolate hides fur shadows and everyday wear between washes, and a firm, even seat lets a pet sleep flat without sinking a hollow. Choose a performance weave meant for pets.

### Should a window seat cushion match the wood below it or contrast with it?

On honey or antique pine, a cushion one or two shades darker than the wood looks like it always belonged there. A contrast color works as well, but it makes the cushion the star instead of the old box.
