# A chocolate, cream and charcoal corduroy stacker, and what a kids floor sofa can borrow from the patio

*Hana reads a play arch in late sun and sorts out what indoor play pieces should take from outdoor cushions, and what they should keep.*

> **The quick answer:** A kids floor sofa or play stacker can borrow three habits from outdoor cushions: dark tones on the most-handled surfaces, removable covers, and pieces that stack away. It should keep indoor softness, like corduroy, which is for indoor use only. Here a chocolate outer arch hides scuffs while cream and charcoal keep the set from reading as one brown mass.

## Late sun, three arches, one playroom

The darkest piece in this playroom is the one children touch most. That is not an accident.

A chocolate brown [corduroy](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/corduroy/) arch holds a cream arch, which holds a charcoal half-dome. They sit on a star-dotted cream rug. A knit bear hangs on a wooden peg rail. A rope basket hangs beside the window. Linen curtains, a wall ledge for books, a woven basket on the floor.

The chocolate gives the set weight against a pale wall. The cream arch reads like a band of light inside it. Charcoal is a cooler dark, so the palette does not collapse into one brown shape.

Light comes low from the window on the left. It catches the top of every rib on the brown arch. Corduroy wants side light, so place it near a window rather than under a ceiling lamp.

The gallery beside this photo holds patio pieces on purpose: a sage leaf cushion tied to a rattan chair, a navy palm bench cushion by a pool. Outdoor cushions are chosen for hard use. Some of that thinking belongs indoors, with children.

Children measure comfort with their whole body. They climb the arch, lie in it, drag it. For sizes, see [kids floor sofa size by age](https://cushionguide.com/guides/kids-floor-sofa-size-by-age/). For fabric, [kid-friendly cushion fabric](https://cushionguide.com/guides/kid-friendly-cushion-fabric/). More pieces live under [kids floor sofas](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/kids-floor-sofas/) and [kids' room cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/kids-room-cushions/). What is under your child's bed right now?

Dark where hands land.
Light where the eye rests.
Soft where a child sits.

## Pinned by Hana, low on the rug

Five pins, from the chocolate outer arch to the window light that shows the ribs.

1. **Chocolate outer arch**: A dark outer arch hides scuffs on the most-handled surface.
2. **Cream middle arch**: The cream band reads almost like a light stripe inside the brown.
3. **Charcoal dome**: A cool charcoal core stops the palette from becoming all brown.
4. **Hanging basket**: Rope and knit accessories tie the dark arch to the light room.
5. **Window side light**: Low sun from the side picks out every rib on the brown arch.

## What to borrow from the patio, what to keep from the living room

| Habit | Borrowed from outdoor cushions | Kept from indoor cushions |
|---|---|---|
| Color | Dark tones where hands and feet land | A soft neutral like cream in the middle |
| Fabric | Outdoor weaves only for porch or patio play corners | Corduroy's warm ribs, for indoor use only |
| Covers | Removable, so they come off for cleaning | Fitted and neat, so the piece still looks like furniture |
| Storage | Pieces that stack away when not needed | Pieces calm enough to stay out |
| Light | Made to face the weather | Placed near a window so side light shows the texture |

## Two floor sofas under two loft beds

A parent wrote about two IKEA Kura beds. Under the lower level of each, they wanted a floor sofa.

The workshop first assumed a mattress-sized cushion, 38 x 75 in (97 x 190 cm). The parent corrected it: 38 x 38 in (97 x 97 cm). A square play area, not the whole footprint.

They ordered two full sets. Floor cushion, backrest and pillows, in velvet, one set in each of two colors.

Under a bed, you are measuring a room inside a room. Say which one you mean. The sketch on [closet and under-loft-bed nooks](https://cushionguide.com/concepts/closet-and-under-loft-bed-nooks/) shows both readings.

## Buyer questions: smaller sizes, returns, a flat corner

**A common question:** Can the floor sofa be made smaller for a small apartment, around 50 to 70 inches?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Order from the standard-size listing and write the exact size you need. A shorter sofa, for example 65 or 70 in (165 or 178 cm), costs the same. For a much smaller version of about 50 in (127 cm), the workshop offered a discount.

**A common question:** What happens if I need to send the floor sofa back?

**The workshop's answer:** If something arrives damaged, photograph it the day the box opens and send the photos to the workshop; in past cases it replaced the damaged parts or refunded, sometimes without asking for anything back. If you simply change your mind, you can return it, and you pay the return shipping.

**A common question:** One corner cushion of my L-shaped floor sofa looks flatter and lumpier than the other. How do I fill it out?

**The workshop's answer:** Give it time; the foam can keep expanding for another 1 to 2 days. Take the cover off and shake or work the foam to help it recover. If a piece still sags after several days, the workshop sends a replacement, as it did for a corner bolster still soft in the middle after 3 days.

## On the cutting table: the rainbow stacker

| | |
|---|---|
| Piece | Three-part rainbow stacker: outer arch, middle arch, half-dome |
| Fabric | Corduroy, indoor use |
| Colors | Chocolate brown, cream, charcoal |
| Piping | None |
| Edge | Box edge |
| Placement | Near a window, so side light shows the ribs |
| After unpacking | Allow 1 to 2 extra days for the foam to recover |
| Best for | Shared family rooms and calm playrooms |

> **Tailor's margin:** Corduroy wants side light. Set a corduroy play arch near a window, and the top of every rib shows.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Can a corduroy kids floor sofa go on a covered porch?

No. Corduroy is an indoor fabric, and sun and water can affect it. For a porch or patio play corner, choose one of the outdoor fabrics instead and keep corduroy for the playroom.

### Why use a dark color on a kids play arch?

The outer surface is the one most handled, climbed and dragged. A dark tone like chocolate hides scuffs there, while lighter inner pieces keep the set from looking heavy in a pale room.

### How do I size a floor sofa for the space under a loft bed?

Decide first whether the cushion fills the whole bed footprint or just a play square. One parent needed 38 x 38 in (97 x 97 cm), not the mattress-sized 38 x 75 in (97 x 190 cm) first assumed.

### Where should a corduroy play set sit in the room?

Near a window, if you can. Low side light catches the top of each rib and gives corduroy its depth; under a ceiling light the same fabric tends to look flat.
