# A chocolate corduroy corner floor cushion under an ivory canopy, through the year

*A child's corner is never finished. It changes with the weather, and the cushion at its heart should be the one piece that doesn't have to.*

> **The quick answer:** A corner floor cushion for a kids' reading nook works best in a dark, hard-wearing cloth at floor level, with lighter pillows above. This quarter circle is cut for a 90-degree corner in chocolate wide-wale corduroy, which hides scuffs from shoes and toys. Through the year, change the blanket and pillows, and leave the cushion where it is.

## Pinned by Harlan: the plate, five points

Five pins, from the lit canopy down to the round jute rug in front of the curve.

1. **Wide-wale corduroy gusset**: Dark brown on the gusset hides scuffs from shoes and toys, which is exactly where a floor cushion gets marked.
2. **Star pillow as backrest**: A shaped pillow leaning on the wall gives a child something to rest against without a hard back.
3. **Tan cloud pillow**: The cloud repeats the cushion's brown in a lighter tone, so the pillows look chosen rather than random.
4. **Canopy with fairy lights**: The canopy hem falls just behind the cushion, framing the nook without anyone sitting on the fabric.
5. **Round jute rug**: The rug's curve repeats the cushion's quarter-round front and softens the floor in front of it.

## What the corner is made of

Dark at the floor, light above. That is the whole plan of this corner, and it is an old one.

The corner floor cushion is a quarter circle cut for a 90-degree corner, in chocolate wide-wale corduroy. Its thick gusset gives it a clear outline against the pale floor, so it works as a low seat and a soft landing both. The gusset is where shoes and toys hit, and dark brown hides the scuffs. No piping; the ribs and the thick edge carry the line on their own.

Above it, everything gets lighter step by step. A cream star pillow leans on the wall as a backrest without a hard back. A speckled bouclé round sits beside it. The tan cloud pillow bridges the brown and the cream, so the pillows look chosen rather than tossed. The ivory tulle canopy hangs just behind the cushion, so nobody sits on its hem, and warm fairy lights glow over three framed rainbow and cat prints.

On the floor, a round braided jute rug repeats the curved front. Wooden stacking toys, an open picture book and a folded oatmeal knit blanket say this corner gets used.

Through the year the corner changes around the cushion, not with it. In January it wants the blanket and the lights; in July it wants floor. Buy the cushion once, cry once, my friend, and let the soft things above it do the changing.

## The same corner, four seasons

| Season | What changes | What stays put |
|---|---|---|
| Winter | The oatmeal knit blanket comes unfolded; fairy lights go on by late afternoon | The corduroy seat, warm under the hand |
| Spring | Blanket folded to the side; picture books read by window light | The quarter circle in its corner |
| Summer | Blanket put away; fewer pillows, more floor to sprawl on | The dark gusset taking the scuffs |
| Fall | Blanket back out; the lights come on a little earlier each week | The canopy hem just behind the cushion |

## Ninety-eight inches, then eighty-nine

A buyer in the US asked the workshop for a modular floor sofa 98 in (249 cm) wide, with 8 to 12 days of processing. Then the tape measure came out again. Too big. The request changed to 89 in (226 cm), and the quote changed with it.

Nine inches is a lot of cushion to lose on paper and a lot of floor to win back in a room. Width moves the price and the lead time, so measure the wall or the alcove before you ask for a quote, not after. The same goes for a corner seat: measure both walls first. Where does your child actually sit to read? For bigger floor pieces, see [modular floor sofas](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/modular-floor-sofas/).

## Buyer questions: backrests, models and parcels

**A common question:** My tufted floor cushion has no wall behind it. How will the backrest stay up?

**The workshop's answer:** The workshop can send metal frames with the order, at no charge, so the backrest stands on its own.

**A common question:** Is the 79 in size the whole modular sofa or one cushion, and how do your models differ?

**The workshop's answer:** 79 in (201 cm) is the full length, outer edge to outer edge. One model uses four flat cushions, the other two L-shaped ones; both share the same fabric and foam density, so they sit the same and only the cut differs. A custom length adds processing time, my friend; ask the workshop for the current figure in writing.

**A common question:** Only one vacuum-packed piece of my set has arrived. Are more boxes on the way?

**The workshop's answer:** Probably. Pieces ship together but can arrive separately, so check the tracking for every parcel. If a piece really is missing, the workshop remakes and sends it; in one case a set had gone out incomplete and the missing pieces went into production right away.

> **Tailor's margin:** Measure the wall before you ask for a quote. One floor sofa lost 9 inches after a second look with the tape.

## Questions buyers ask next

### How is a quarter-circle corner floor cushion sized?

By its two straight sides, the ones that sit against the walls. The curved front is longer than either side, so picture that arc on your floor before settling on a size.

### Is corduroy practical for a child's floor cushion?

Yes, in a dark color. Wide-wale corduroy in chocolate brown hides scuffs from shoes and toys on the gusset, the part that meets the floor, while lighter pillows above keep the corner bright.

### Does a kids' corner cushion need piping?

Not necessarily. This one has none: the thick gusset and the dark color already draw a clear outline against the pale floor, and a plain edge suits the relaxed look of a play corner.

### Where should a canopy hang over a floor cushion?

Just behind it. Here the ivory tulle hem falls behind the cushion, so it frames the nook without anyone sitting on the fabric or pulling it down.
