# Chocolate Chenille on a Walnut Window Seat, From Long Sun to Short Days

*A porch gets used in bursts, all June and hardly in January. A reading nook by an arched window gets used every season, just differently.*

> **The quick answer:** A chocolate chenille window seat cushion suits a reading nook used all year, because the deep brown pile hides lint and wear from daily sitting. Keep one light pillow by the glass so the seat doesn't vanish at winter dusk, turn the cushion now and then in summer sun, and on a shallow sill add a non-slip base or ties from the start.

Ivory and ochre pillows keep it from feeling heavy.")

## Thick enough to look upholstered, slim enough to leave the glass alone

The arched window here rises well above the cushion, and that was the first thing I noticed, because it means somebody chose the thickness on purpose. The [window seat cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/window-seat-cushions/) sits on a walnut storage base and matches its footprint exactly, so seat and box read as one piece of furniture.

The cloth is a chocolate chenille, one of our [chenille and jacquard weaves](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/jacquard-and-damask/), with no piping at all. A deep brown pile forgives lint, crumbs and the daily press of a reader far better than a pale weave would. Brown on walnut keeps everything in one warm family, which is exactly what a wall of leather-bound books asks for.

Two pillows do the balancing. The ivory velvet one sits against the glass so the seat doesn't turn into a dark hole once the sun goes down. The ochre one echoes the brass stem of the green banker's lamp and the tan spines behind it. That green glass shade is the only cool color in the picture, so the eye goes straight to the reading corner. A round walnut pedestal table waits for a cup, sheer ivory curtains soften the light, and a red-and-cream runner leads you in from the door.

## Sixty-one inches long, thirteen deep, and it still slid

A buyer messaged the workshop about a narrow window seat: 61 in long and only 13 in deep (155 x 33 cm), in linen L04 with L16 piping. They wanted it low enough not to block the window. The workshop suggested 2 to 3 in (5 to 7.5 cm) and checked the thickness with them before cutting.

The workshop made it to the exact measurements they gave the workshop, and it still slid off the front edge. A 13 in sill doesn't leave a slim cushion much to hold on to.

The workshop offered three ways out: a remake at cost, a slightly larger size, or an anti-slip base. The lesson I pass to every neighbor with a shallow sill: measure the real seat surface at several points, front and back, left and right, and put a non-slip base or ties on the order from the start. Our [sliding Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/stop-bench-cushion-sliding-ties-nonslip/) shows both. How deep is your sill, measured at both ends?

## Five pins on a warm, dark seat

Five pins, from the chenille top to the walnut base, show how a dark seat stays warm without going heavy.

1. **Chocolate chenille top**: A deep brown pile hides lint and wear from daily reading far better than a pale weave.
2. **Green banker's lamp**: The green glass is the only cool color in the frame, so it pulls the eye to the reading corner.
3. **Ochre accent pillow**: Ochre bridges the dark cushion and the tan book spines on the shelves behind.
4. **Ivory pillow**: A light pillow against the glass stops the dark seat reading as a hole at dusk.
5. **Walnut storage base**: The cushion matches the walnut box footprint exactly, so base and seat read as one piece.

## A year on this seat, season by season

- ✓ Summer: the arched window lets in the longest sun of the year. Turn the cushion end to end now and then so one half doesn't take it all.
- ✓ Fall: bring the ochre pillow forward. The lamp comes on earlier, and anything brass-colored starts to glow.
- ✓ Winter: keep the ivory pillow against the glass. At early dusk it is the only thing that stops a brown seat from disappearing.
- ✓ Spring: vacuum the chenille pile with a soft brush head and check that the cushion hasn't crept toward the front edge.

## Buyer questions: a restaurant booth, soft fabric and a corner banquette

**A common question:** Can you make seat cushions for a U-shaped booth in a restaurant?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, as separate pads, for example two at 24 x 19 in and one at 14 ft x 19 in. Send every final measurement in inches only or centimeters only, never mixed, to avoid errors. The workshop quoted 1 to 2 weeks for production and delivery.

**A common question:** What is your soft fabric made of, and is its texture more even than the linen?

**The workshop's answer:** The soft fabric is 100% premium polyester, with a much smoother, more uniform surface than linen, which has natural slubs. It is easy to clean and wipe down for daily use.

**A common question:** What would a cushion for a corner banquette of about 8 by 7 feet cost?

**The workshop's answer:** For sides of 85.5 in and 94.5 in, the workshop first asked for the depth, 24 in, before quoting, and took a little off the quote as a first purchase. The price reflects quality fabrics and high-density foam that last for many years.

> **Tailor's margin:** At winter dusk a brown window seat against dark glass reads as a hole. One ivory pillow by the window keeps the shape visible.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Why does a chocolate chenille cushion suit a window seat used every day?

A deep brown pile hides lint and the wear of daily sitting better than a pale weave, and it keeps a walnut base and a wall of books in one warm color family, so the seat looks settled rather than new.

### How thick should a cushion be on a window sill 13 inches deep?

For a 61 x 13 in sill the workshop suggested 2 to 3 in, low enough to keep the window clear. Order a non-slip base or ties with it, because a slim cushion on a shallow sill slides easily.

### Why add an ivory pillow to a dark brown window seat by the glass?

At dusk a dark seat against dark glass reads as a hole. One light pillow by the window keeps the outline visible in the evening and gives the eye a place to land, while a warmer pillow faces the room.
