# A charcoal outdoor bench cushion on teak by the pool, and what it teaches the living room

*Harsh noon sun, wet feet, sunscreen. The pad on this teak bench was built for all three, and half of its tricks work just as well indoors.*

> **The quick answer:** For a slab-style teak bench by a pool, choose a slim, dark, water-repellent bench cushion about a fifth of the bench height, so it reads as a pad and not a pillow. Charcoal hides the wet footprints and sunscreen that mark pale fabric. Indoors, borrow the dark weave for busy benches and a non-slip base for long ones.

## Pinned by Callum

Five pins on a hot deck, from the charcoal top to the pool edge the bench runs beside.

1. **Charcoal textured top**: A dark micro-weave hides sunscreen and wet footprints far better than white.
2. **Slim piped edge**: The cushion is kept thin so it follows the bench's clean slab profile.
3. **Teak waterfall leg**: Honey teak against charcoal makes a strong two-color contrast on pale stone.
4. **Agave in concrete**: A sculptural agave in concrete matches the bench's hard-edged, modern shape.
5. **Turquoise pool edge**: Setting the bench parallel to the pool coping keeps the composition calm and linear.

## Plate notes: a pad, not a pillow

Stand back from the plate first. A long teak bench with waterfall ends. A charcoal pad on top. Pale limestone, the turquoise lip of a pool, one agave in a square concrete planter. That's the whole cast.

The pad is thin on purpose, about a fifth of the bench height. At that proportion the teak slab stays the furniture and the cushion becomes a layer on it. Go thick and you'd have a mattress on a sculpture. The slim box edge is self-piped in the same charcoal, so it traces the slab profile once and doesn't add a bright stripe in hard light.

Now the weather. Midday sun on limestone is merciless: sharp shadows, glare, every mark on show. A white pad here would carry the ghost of every wet swimsuit and every sunscreen hand by the end of the season. The charcoal micro-weave hides both. Water-repellent is a promise; waterproof is a contract. This fabric keeps its promise, and you still bring it in when the sky turns black.

Teak does the warm work. Honey wood against charcoal makes a two-color plate that holds up on pale stone. The agave is there because its leaves are as hard-edged as the bench; a soft fern would look lost. And the bench runs parallel to the pool coping, which keeps the scene calm and linear. No throw pillows, no lantern, no towel draped for show.

What would your bench look like with everything but one plant taken away? Try it for a week, friend. Then browse [bench cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bench-cushions/), the [patio and porch cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/patio-and-porch-cushions/) room and the [water-repellent membrane fabrics](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/water-repellent-membrane/). ## Borrowing both ways: deck to den, den to deck

| Idea | Where it comes from | Where else it works |
|---|---|---|
| Dark micro-weave that hides marks | The pool deck: wet feet, sunscreen | Mudroom and kitchen benches with kids and dogs |
| Slim pad, about a fifth of bench height | Modern slab benches outdoors | Indoor benches where the wood should show |
| Non-slip base | A long indoor window bench | Smooth teak and deck benches |
| Self-piped box edge | Indoor upholstery | Outdoor pads that should look tailored |
| One sculptural plant, nothing else | Minimal pool decks | Any room where the bench is the centerpiece |

## Eleven feet of velvet, one order

One buyer wrote in about a long window bench at home. Indoors, velvet, nowhere near a pool. The size was 132 3/4 x 22 x 2 in (337 x 56 x 5 cm): eleven feet of cushion, two inches thick, with a velvet body, a contrasting velvet piping and a non-slip base underneath.

There's an outdoor lesson hiding in that order. A thin pad on a long, smooth bench wants to walk every time someone sits down. The non-slip base is the same thinking we use on decks and boat benches: keep the pad where you put it. Our notes on [stopping a bench cushion from sliding](https://cushionguide.com/guides/stop-bench-cushion-sliding-ties-nonslip/) cover the options.

The shop walked the buyer through choosing the size range on the listing, then writing the exact size and the fabric and piping choices in the personalization note. One order, one piece. Very long benches can still be a single custom cushion, as long as every option is written down. For the one-piece-or-two question, see [long bench cushions](https://cushionguide.com/guides/long-bench-cushion-one-piece-or-two/).

## Buyer questions: fixing, splitting and piping

**A common question:** Can you make box cushions for an L-shaped banquette with hidden zippers and piping along the top and bottom edges?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. The shop makes box-style seat and back cushions with piping on the top and bottom edges, hidden zippers on the back edge and high-density foam, in performance fabrics that include olive and moss greens.

**A common question:** I sent you a wrong measurement and one cushion is too long. Can I just cut it down myself?

**The workshop's answer:** The foam can be cut, but not well by hand. A local upholsterer can cut the foam and shorten the cover; get a price first, since a new cushion from the shop may cost less. In that buyer's case, the shop discounted a correctly sized reorder and didn't ask for the old cushion back.

**A common question:** Would it cost less to split one big cushion into two pieces?

**The workshop's answer:** No. The price is based on the total size, so two pieces covering the same area cost the same as one.

## On the cutting table: the poolside pad

| | |
|---|---|
| Piece | Slim outdoor bench pad, box edge |
| Fabric | Charcoal water-repellent membrane fabric, micro-weave texture |
| Piping | Self piping in charcoal |
| Thickness | About a fifth of the bench height |
| Bench | Teak slab with waterfall ends, on limestone |
| Why charcoal | Hides wet footprints and sunscreen |
| Borrow indoors | Dark weave for busy benches, non-slip base for long ones |
| Best for | Pool decks and modern patios |

> A slim charcoal bench cushion about a fifth of the bench height reads as part of the teak, and it hides every wet swimsuit a white one would record.

> **Tailor's margin:** A 132 3/4 in (337 cm) bench pad only 2 in (5 cm) thick got a non-slip base, the same trick that stops deck pads walking.

## Questions buyers ask next

### How thick should an outdoor pad be on a modern slab bench?

Thin enough to read as a layer on the wood. On this teak waterfall bench the pad is about a fifth of the bench height, which keeps the slab looking like furniture instead of a stand for a mattress.

### Why pick charcoal over white for a pool deck cushion?

Pool decks mean wet swimsuits, sunscreen and bare feet in harsh sun. A charcoal micro-weave hides those marks, while a white or pale cushion shows every one. Let the teak supply the warmth instead.

### Can an indoor bench cushion have a non-slip base?

Yes. One buyer ordered a 132 3/4 x 22 x 2 in (337 x 56 x 5 cm) velvet cushion for a long indoor window bench with a non-slip base, so the thin pad would stay put on the wood.

### Does a water-repellent outdoor cushion need to come in when it rains hard?

It's the safer habit. Water-repellent fabric sheds splashes and light rain, but it is not a sealed waterproof barrier, so heavy or long rain can still reach the foam. Bring cushions in for storms and for winter.
