# A charcoal honeycomb cushion on a farmhouse dining bench, read with a dishrag in hand

*The questions come first, because that is where most bench cushions go right or wrong. Then the bench itself, and a checklist I'd tape inside any kitchen cabinet.*

> **The quick answer:** A dining bench cushion should hide crumbs, come off for the wash and leave about 10 to 12 in (25 to 30 cm) between its top and the tabletop. A dark woven pattern such as a charcoal honeycomb jacquard forgives daily spills, and a zippered cover washes at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle. In most nooks, 2 or 3 in of foam is enough.

## The questions first: sizes, sums and shapes

**A common question:** My bench is 17 × 52 in and that isn't one of the options. Which size do I pick?

**The workshop's answer:** Pick the closest option, usually the next size up, and write your exact size, thickness and fabric and piping codes in the personalization box. A 17 × 52 in cushion went through the 18 × 52 option, and 47 × 18½ in through 18 × 48. If nothing is close, the workshop adds your size or sets up a custom option.

**A common question:** What would a custom bench cushion for my measurements come to?

**The workshop's answer:** Select your size ranges on the listing and the exact price shows, with any store sale already built in. Sets and shapes can be quoted in one reply: two nook cushions of 19½ × 69 and 19½ × 57 in together, or a 118 × 18½ in velvet trapezoid on its own.

**A common question:** Our window bench isn't a plain rectangle. Do you make shaped cushions?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, all the time. Use the custom-shape (trapezoid) listing, choose the size range from your longest and deepest measurements, and upload a drawing with every measurement, the thickness and the fabric code in Add Personalization. The cushion follows the drawing, and you can message the drawing first to have it checked.

## Three meals a day on one cushion

A [dining bench cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bench-cushions/) works harder than any other cushion in the house: breakfast, homework, supper and whatever happens to the syrup in between. So I read this one with a dishrag in hand.

The pad is a charcoal jacquard woven in a honeycomb, white lines tracing each hexagon. Run a palm across it and you feel the weave: flat, firm, a faint ridge where the pale yarn crosses the dark. It's a hard-wearing hand, not a cuddly one, and at a table that's exactly right. The dark ground swallows everyday marks, and the white lines break the surface up, so a crumb gets lost in the pattern instead of sitting on a solid like an uninvited guest. Because a [jacquard](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/jacquard-and-damask/) is woven, not printed, the pattern wears with the cloth.

The pad runs the full length of the oak bench and sits square on it, thick enough to take the edge off hard oak without lifting anyone too high for the table. Check that gap before choosing a thickness; the [seat height calculator](https://cushionguide.com/studio/seat-height-calculator/) does the sums.

The self-piped front edge is the practical detail, dear. Legs brush it every time someone slides in, and a corded welt keeps that line straight through a year of weekday mornings.

The styling is mostly breakfast. White plates and bowls repeat the white of the honeycomb, and white subway tile says it again behind the counter. A cream enamel pendant throws a warm pool over the table. A French press, wooden cutting boards and a bud vase on the sill keep it homely. Wooden chairs across the table leave the bench as the only upholstered seat.

Right, then: what does your bench see on a weekday morning?

## Pinned on the photograph

Four checkpoints, from the pad to the pendant.

1. **Charcoal hexagon pad**: A dark honeycomb is forgiving at a family table where spills are daily.
2. **Self-piped front edge**: Piping keeps the long front edge straight where legs brush past it.
3. **Breakfast table setting**: White plates and bowls repeat the white lines of the pattern.
4. **Enamel pendant**: A cream enamel shade throws a warm pool of light over the table.

## The breakfast-bench checklist

- ✓ About 10 to 12 in (25 to 30 cm) from cushion top to tabletop.
- ✓ 2 or 3 in (5 or 7.5 cm) of foam for most nooks; 4 in (10 cm) only on a low bench.
- ✓ A dark mid-tone pattern that forgives syrup and crumbs.
- ✓ A zippered cover that goes in the machine at 86°F (30°C) on gentle, then air-dries.
- ✓ Self piping on the front edge, where legs brush past.
- ✓ One last message with the final fabric code, the piping code and the size.

## The floral that should have been velvet

A buyer had asked the workshop about a second fabric somewhere in the middle of the messages. The cushion arrived in a floral. It should have been velvet.

At first the workshop read the complaint as a question about a free gift, which made for one confusing day. Then it checked, confirmed the wrong fabric had gone on, and asked the buyer to circle the right one on a photo. Only the cover was remade, in the circled fabric, and the order went to the front of the line.

I've written a few wandering threads myself. When a conversation drifts through several fabrics, end it with one line: final fabric code, piping code, size. Then nobody has to guess.

## On the cutting table

| | |
|---|---|
| Cushion | Dining bench pad, full bench length |
| Fabric | Charcoal jacquard with a white honeycomb |
| Hand | Flat and firm, with a faint ridge along the pale lines |
| Piping | Self piping on the front edge |
| Edge | Box edge |
| Thickness | 2 or 3 in (5 or 7.5 cm) for most dining nooks |
| Clearance | About 10 to 12 in (25 to 30 cm) to the tabletop |
| Care | Zippered cover; 86°F (30°C) gentle wash, air-dry |
| Best for | Family dining benches and breakfast nooks |

> At a family table, leave about 10 to 12 in between the top of the bench cushion and the tabletop, or supper starts to feel like a booster seat.
>
> — Maggie, at the breakfast table

> **Tailor's margin:** If a dining bench sees three meals a day, choose a dark mid-tone pattern: a charcoal honeycomb hides the crumbs that a pale solid would show.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Is jacquard a good fabric for a dining bench?

A tightly woven jacquard is a sound choice: the pattern is woven in rather than printed, so it wears with the cloth, and a dark ground hides daily marks. Keep the cover zippered so it can go in the machine.

### How thick should a dining bench cushion be?

Thinner than most people expect. Leave about 10 to 12 in (25 to 30 cm) between cushion top and tabletop; in most nooks that means 2 or 3 in of foam. 4 in suits a bench that sits low.

### Can I order a spare cover for the dining bench?

Yes. Covers can be made on their own, so a second one can wait in the drawer while the first is in the wash. Order it in the same fabric code and size as the cushion.
