# Charcoal linen-look daybed cushion and bolster: how the cloth feels, wears and cleans

*One charcoal cushion, one long bolster, a room made of pale things. This Reading is about the cloth: how it feels under the hand, how it ages, how it cleans.*

> **The quick answer:** A charcoal linen-look daybed cushion feels dry and matte rather than slick, hides the everyday marks pale cloth shows, and shows pale lint instead. On the workshop's daybed sets, the seat cover unzips and washes on a gentle, cold cycle, while back cushions are not washable. Here one full-length bolster in the same cloth keeps the oak platform low.

## The oak-platform palette, from charcoal to faded red

- Charcoal weave — #3F4246 — Cushion and bolster. Matte, with no sheen.
- Pale oak — #CDB08A — Platform and herringbone floor. Lifts the charcoal from below.
- Cream knit — #EAE3D6 — The light end of the throw.
- Knit gray — #A6A29B — The dark end of the throw, a bridge to the cushion.
- Faded red — #A2574A — The rug. The one warm color in the room.
- Fig green — #5B7446 — Fiddle-leaf fig and shelf plants. Green the cushion cannot give.
- Plaster white — #EEEAE3 — The wall behind the frames. Keeps the corner quiet.

## How the charcoal weave feels in overcast light

Charcoal is patient. It takes whatever light the room gives and does not shine back.

Here the light is overcast and even. The linen-look weave shows as texture, not gloss: a dry, matte surface that looks woven rather than printed. Run a hand across it and it catches slightly. It does not slip. That small grip is why the throw stays where it was left.

The seat is about as thick as the oak platform is deep, which keeps the whole piece low. One full-length bolster with round ends does the work of a sofa back and leaves the wall free for the gallery frames. Self piping follows every edge in the same charcoal. The outline comes from the shadow along the box edge, not from a second color.

Dark cloth forgives. A drip from the mug on the tray, a smudge from a book, a shoe on the corner: charcoal keeps most of it quiet. What it shows is the pale things. Lint, crumbs, a sweater's fuzz. Keep a lint roller in the drawer.

Everything around the cushion is softer than it. The chunky cream-to-gray knit throw is the loudest texture in the room. The faded red Persian rug warms a cool gray. The linen drum lamp on its brass stand repeats the weave at eye level. The fig and the shelf plants bring the green. Two books and a mini succulent turn the platform corner into a side table.

The two gallery daybeds show other hands on the same low shape: black faux leather, smooth and cool, and rust suede-look, soft and warm in evening light. Which would you rather lie on for an afternoon?

Dark cloth.
Pale room.
Soft light.

## Pinned by Hana: what the hand notices

Five pins, from the full-length bolster to the faded rug that warms the gray.

1. **Full-length bolster**: One long bolster does the job of a sofa back while keeping the wall visible.
2. **Box seat edge**: The seat is about as thick as the oak platform, keeping the whole piece low.
3. **Ombre knit throw**: A chunky cream-to-gray knit softens the charcoal and the hard platform corner.
4. **Tray with mug**: A wooden tray turns the seat into a side table.
5. **Faded Persian rug**: Muted red in the rug warms a cool gray cushion.

## A 197-inch sofa seat, made in three parts

A buyer renovating a large house wrote to the workshop with two long pieces in mind. Indoors, a sofa seat about 4 x 31.5 x 197 in (10 x 80 x 500 cm) in off-white linen. Outdoors, a daybed cushion about 4 x 35.4 x 86.6 in (10 x 90 x 220 cm) in off-white outdoor fabric. Both firm, not soft.

The workshop quoted firm high-density foam for both, and the indoor seat in three parts rather than one 197 in length. Striped linen throw pillows came into the conversation too. Then the workshop asked the question that shapes the whole look: should the backrests be foam-filled, or pillow-style?

Decide that early. A foam back holds a straight line. A pillow back gives, and invites leaning. The bolster in this photo is a third answer: one long round piece, and the wall stays open. For sizing one, see [bolster pillow size and diameter](https://cushionguide.com/guides/bolster-pillow-size-diameter/).

## Buyer questions: Kallax sizes, a queen daybed, and a mattress we don't make

**A common question:** What cushion sizes fit an IKEA Kallax used as a bench, including the smaller 4-cube one?

**The workshop's answer:** For the long Kallax the workshop made cushions about 15 3/8 x 57 5/8 in (39 x 146.5 cm), and for the 4-cube unit about 15 3/8 x 30 1/8 in (39 x 76.5 cm). Order through the IKEA Kallax option on the window seat cushion listing.

**A common question:** Could you make the daybed mattress cover and backrests in queen size, or in linen?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Send clear measurements of the actual mattress, ideally once the daybed has arrived and you know the mattress fits, and the workshop makes the set to them.

**A common question:** Can you make an extra-firm daybed mattress from natural materials only, like a wool and cotton futon, with no foam?

**The workshop's answer:** No. The workshop does not make the mattress itself. It can make the mattress covers, cushions and pillows for a daybed, including one with a trundle.

> Charcoal linen-look on a daybed hides the everyday marks pale cloth shows; what charcoal shows is pale lint, so keep a lint roller close.

> **Tailor's margin:** Before choosing charcoal, rub the swatch with a pale sweater sleeve. Whatever sticks is what you will see every day.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Does a charcoal daybed cushion look too heavy in a small room?

Not when the materials around it are pale. Here light oak, a cream-to-gray knit throw and a faded rug soften it, and the seat stays low, so the charcoal reads calm rather than stark.

### Can one bolster stand in for a row of back pillows on a daybed?

On a daybed against a wall, yes. A single bolster running the full cushion length gives a back to lean on and leaves the wall open above it. Keep its diameter close to the seat thickness so the two read as one piece.

### How does linen-look fabric feel next to faux leather on a daybed?

Linen-look is dry and matte, with a woven texture that grips a throw slightly. Faux leather is smooth and cooler under the hand. The two gallery daybeds beside this one show both on the same low shape.

### Should a very long sofa or daybed seat be one cushion or several?

Several is usually easier. One buyer's 197 in (500 cm) indoor sofa seat was quoted in three parts, which are simpler to handle and fit than a single length.
