# A charcoal corduroy window seat cushion, read by morning, evening and screen light

*Rosa takes a dark corduroy window seat apart layer by layer, then watches it change color from breakfast to lamp-lighting time.*

> **The quick answer:** A charcoal corduroy window seat cushion looks different at every hour: soft gray with visible ribs in diffused morning light, near-black under evening lamps, and often flatter on a screen than in daylight. Order a swatch, check it at your window morning and evening, and pair it with one saturated pillow, such as mustard velvet.

One mustard velvet pillow is all the color it needs.")

## Pinned by Rosa: the seat, the pillow and the light

Five pins, read from the sheers inward: the light comes first, then the cord, the mustard pillow, the books and the bookcase.

1. **Charcoal corduroy seat**: Charcoal grounds the tall window and hides the grime a low seat near a door always collects.
2. **Mustard velvet pillow**: Mustard on charcoal is the strongest contrast in the room and pulls the eye straight to the seat.
3. **Books and mug**: A small stack on the cushion shows the seat is deep enough to double as a ledge.
4. **Sheer curtains**: Sheers soften the light so the dark cord shows its ribs instead of turning into a flat block.
5. **White bookcase**: The colored spines are the only pattern nearby, so the cushion stays plain.

## Taking the cushion apart, layer by layer

Pull up a chair and let me take this cushion apart for you, the way I used to on my workbench.

**The top.** Charcoal corduroy. Corduroy is a pile fabric, so every rib has a lit side and a shadow side. That is why it never reads as one flat color, and why light matters more here than on a plain weave. The [corduroy shelf](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/corduroy/) shows the wales side by side.

**The edge.** A box edge with self piping, charcoal on charcoal. The piping does its job without drawing a line; the ribs supply all the detail the seat needs.

**The core.** Firm foam keeps the front edge level, so the seat doubles as a ledge. Look at the two stacked books and the stoneware mug resting on it without a tilt.

**The fit.** Wall to wall in a floor-length recess, low and close to a doorway, where shoes and grocery bags pass all day. Charcoal forgives that traffic far better than oatmeal ever could. More recesses like this one live among the [window seat cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/window-seat-cushions/).

## Morning, evening and the screen in your hand

Now the light. In the morning the sheers soften everything, and the charcoal turns a warm pewter with every rib showing. By evening, with the sheers gone dark and a lamp on, the same cushion sinks toward black, and the mustard velvet pillow starts to glow, because velvet pile catches lamplight.

The screen is the third light, and the least honest. A phone brightens dark fabric and flattens its ribs, so charcoal on a listing can pass for mid-gray. The fix I trust is a swatch taped to the seat itself, checked at breakfast and again after supper. The [screen versus daylight Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-color-screen-vs-daylight/) walks through it.

Which hour does your window seat get used most, neighbor: morning coffee or evening reading? Choose the color for that hour.

## Ordered at 27 x 64, needed 35 x 75

A buyer in the US ordered a window seat cushion at 27 x 64 in (69 x 163 cm), then went back to the seat with a tape and found the space really needed 35 x 75 in (89 x 191 cm). That is 8 in deeper and 11 in longer, not a rounding error.

They wrote to the workshop expecting to cancel and start over. They did not have to. The workshop charged only the difference between the two sizes, and trimmed even that because other cushions were in the same order.

I have watched this happen on porches for nearly thirty years. The first measurement gets taken from memory or from the old cushion; the second gets taken from the seat. Re-measure before production starts, and if a number changes, say so right away. A size change is a price difference, not a new order. The [window seat measuring Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/how-to-measure-window-seat-cushion/) shows where the tape goes.

## On the cutting table: the charcoal seat

| | |
|---|---|
| Piece | Box-edge window seat cushion, wall to wall |
| Fabric | Charcoal corduroy with a visible rib |
| Piping | Self piping, charcoal on charcoal |
| Accent | One mustard velvet pillow set upright against the reveal |
| Light | Sheer curtains soften daylight so the ribs show |
| Color check | Swatch at the window, morning and evening |
| Care | Removable cover, gentle cycle at 86°F (30°C) |
| Best for | Tall, bright recesses near a doorway or hall |

## Buyer questions: backrests, sizes and hard-wearing fabric

**A common question:** Can I buy just the L-shaped backrests and use them on my daybed?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, choose the L-shaped backrest in the options. Each one covers a 39 x 39 in (99 x 99 cm) corner, so two of them span a 39 x 79 in (99 x 201 cm) sofa. One buyer used a pair on a 75 x 38 in (191 x 97 cm) daybed from another brand.

**A common question:** What would a 29.5 x 37.5 in velvet cushion cost?

**The workshop's answer:** Pick the nearest size options on the listing and the exact price for that size appears. Then write your exact dimensions, 29½ x 37½ in (75 x 95 cm), in the personalization box so the cushion is cut to them.

**A common question:** Which of your fabrics work as performance fabrics on a kitchen banquette?

**The workshop's answer:** For an indoor kitchen banquette the workshop recommends its linen range, which is hard-wearing and suits a kitchen. For something tougher still, the outdoor fabrics work perfectly well indoors. Every cover is removable and machine washable on a gentle cycle at 86°F (30°C).

> A charcoal corduroy window seat shows its ribs in soft morning light and turns nearly black under an evening lamp, so check the swatch at both hours.

> **Tailor's margin:** Tape a fabric swatch to the window seat and look at it at breakfast and after supper before you commit to a dark corduroy.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Why does charcoal corduroy look lighter in the morning than at night?

Corduroy is a pile fabric, so each rib has a lit side and a shadow side. Soft daylight through sheers lights the ribs and reads as warm gray; a single lamp at night leaves more of each rib in shadow, so the cushion reads near-black.

### Does a dark window seat cushion suit a bright white room?

Often better than a pale one. A tall white recess can look empty, and a dark cushion gives the window a solid base line. Add one saturated pillow, like mustard, rather than several mid-tones, so the eye has one clear place to land.

### What if my window seat measurement changes after I order?

Tell the workshop before production starts. A corrected size is handled as a price difference on the same order rather than a cancellation. Re-measure the seat itself, not the old cushion, and send the new numbers as soon as you have them.
