# Caramel bouclé on a floating oak bench: feel, wear and wash, in numbers

*Bench notes from the cutting table, partner. One photograph, one very long built-in seat, and the honest arithmetic of a looped fabric at the front door.*

> **The quick answer:** A bouclé bench cushion feels warm and soft and hides small marks well, but its loops catch claws, rings and hook-and-loop fasteners and hold pet hair. Choose a zippered cover so it can be washed at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle and air-dried. For a busy entry bench, weigh warmth against snag risk before ordering.

## Field notes on one bench

Three things on this floating oak bench were settled before anyone sat down, and all three are worth copying. The bench is a single oak shelf over terracotta tile.

1. **Full length, full depth.** The pad runs end to end and matches the bench's depth, so the bench reads upholstered, not dressed. No overhang, no reveal.
2. **No piping.** A plain box edge. On a looped cloth a cord would sink into the texture anyway.
3. **Near-tonal color.** Caramel on light oak is a softer version of the wood. Caramel, oak and terracotta would melt together, so a sage pillow and the sage border of the kilim do the cooling. One cool note, used twice.

The styling is load-bearing too. The cream lumbar pillow gives the eye a light spot. The bottle vases and the basket sit on the floor, so the seat stays usable. A basket under a floating bench is storage with zero footprint.

Now the hand. Bouclé is a curly, knotted loop yarn. It feels warm and dry under the palm, and its texture breaks up light, which is why small marks hide well on it. The trade-off lives in the loops: they catch claws, rings and hook-and-loop fasteners, and they hold pet hair. At an entry bench, the enemy is the backpack strap, not the boot.

Cleaning is simple. The cover zips off; wash it inside out at 86°F (30°C) on gentle and air-dry. Vacuum the loops between washes. A [bouclé cover](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/boucle-and-teddy/) on a busy [mudroom bench](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/mudroom-and-entryway-bench-cushions/) earns its keep only if it comes off. The [snags and care Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/boucle-teddy-cushions-snags-care/) goes further.

How many times a day does your entry bench get sat on?

## Pinned on the photograph

Five measured observations, left to right.

1. **Caramel bench pad**: Caramel on light oak is near-tonal; the fabric reads as a softer version of the wood.
2. **Cream lumbar pillow**: A cream lumbar gives the eye a light resting point against all the warm tones.
3. **Sage square pillow**: Sage is the only cool note, and it returns in the kilim border below.
4. **Cream bottle vases**: Plain cream bottles with single stems keep the floor styling spare.
5. **Basket under the bench**: A basket under a floating bench keeps a spare throw close without cluttering the seat.

## Plain or button-tufted, for a 205½ in seat

The buyer in the story asked for both. The differences, from the workshop's own answers:

| | Plain, zippered | Button-tufted |
|---|---|---|
| Cover | Zips off for washing | Stitched closed; cannot come off |
| Filling | Foam core, fiber-wrapped | Packed polyester fiber, no foam core |
| Cleaning | 86°F (30°C) gentle, air-dry | Damp cloth and mild soap, by hand |
| Near wet weather | No trouble; the cover washes | Water gets in at the buttons |
| Price on this quote | Baseline | About 30% more |

## 205½ inches of built-in seat

One buyer wrote in with one very long built-in seat: 205½ in long and 15¾ in deep (522 × 40 cm). A single piece that long is hard to make, hard to ship and hard to get through a door.

The workshop proposed two equal sections of 102¾ in (261 cm), ordered as two items in the cart. The buyer then asked about button tufting. Both were quoted, and tufted came back about 30% higher.

Equal halves put the joint dead center, where it reads as a decision. Tolerance is kindness to your future self: on pieces this long, allow the handmade ½ to 1 in.

## Buyer questions: exact sizes, angled seats, strange shapes

**A common question:** The size menu only shows ranges. Where do my exact bench measurements go?

**The workshop's answer:** Pick the range that covers your size and your thickness, then type the exact dimensions and your fabric and piping codes in the Add Personalization box. The cushion is cut to what you write, not the range. A line like "36 × 11.5 × 2 in, Main 111, Piping 133" is all it takes.

**A common question:** How is a trapezoid window seat cushion priced?

**The workshop's answer:** By two numbers on the trapezoid listing: the depth and the longest length. The low starting price is for the smallest size, and angled shapes cost more than rectangles because they take more labor to cut and sew.

**A common question:** My window seat is six-sided and my bench steps in and out. Can you still make them?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, any size and shape. Measure every side, draw the shape on paper with each size written on it, and send a photo; the workshop checks it before quoting. Past drawings include a 6-sided seat 86½ in at its longest and 20 in at its widest, and a stepped bench of 75⅜ in (1915 mm) on one side, 2 in thick.

## On the cutting table

| | |
|---|---|
| Cushion | Bench pad on a floating oak bench, full length and depth |
| Fabric | Caramel bouclé: curly, knotted loop yarn |
| Piping | None; plain box edge |
| Thickness | 4 in (10 cm) standard; 2, 3 and 5 in offered |
| Foam | About 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³) high-density foam, fiber-wrapped |
| Fastening | Zippered cover; on long pads the zipper can wrap two corners |
| Care | 86°F (30°C) gentle wash, inside out, air-dry; vacuum between washes |
| Watch for | Claws, rings and hook-and-loop fasteners |
| Best for | Entry benches where warmth matters more than wipe-clean |

> A 205½ in built-in seat was made as two equal 102¾ in bench cushions, so the joint lands dead center and reads as a decision, not an accident.

> **Tailor's margin:** Bouclé loops catch hook-and-loop straps and rings. If the entry bench takes backpacks, keep bouclé for the pillows and pick a flat weave for the seat.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Will a bouclé cushion hold dog hair?

Yes. Loops hold pet hair, and claws catch in them. For a bench the dog shares, a tightly woven pet-friendly fabric with no loops is easier; keep bouclé for pillows or a seat the dog can't reach.

### Is bouclé the same as teddy fabric?

They are close cousins: both are polyester with a soft, textured face. Bouclé is the curly, knotted-loop version. They share a family in the Swatch Library, and each has its own color chart.

### If I want buttons, can I still unzip the cover to wash it?

No. Tufted cushions are filled, buttoned and stitched closed, so the cover cannot come off. A zippered version of the same cushion is made without tufting.
