# A caramel bouclé bench cushion in a plaster niche, ordered right the first time

*The fastest cushion to make is the one ordered in a single, complete message. This niche is a good reason to write one.*

> **The quick answer:** To order a custom bench cushion right the first time, send one message with the fabric code, the thickness and a daylight photo of the seat. If the code comes from a product photo, send a screenshot and the workshop will name it. For dark patterned cloth, ask for close-ups first: black on a screen can turn out blue in person.

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** Which fabric is the burgundy cushion in one of your photos?

**The workshop's answer:** Send a screenshot and the workshop names the code. That burgundy was 936, with 938 a very close maroon. An orange in another photo was linen L-53, and one window seat was 916 with 936 piping.

**A common question:** A code in your best-seller photos isn't on the color chart. Can I still order it?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. That one, L-54, is in stock and among the most popular fabrics. It was left off the main chart because it is almost identical to another shade, L-02. Type the code in the personalization box.

**A common question:** Can you make matching back cushions for a bench or banquette?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, alongside the seat cushions. A 98 in (2.5 m) banquette backrest was made in two pieces filled with shredded foam, and outdoor sets have paired softer 4 3/4 in (12 cm) back cushions with firmer 3 1/8 in (8 cm) seats.

## Black on the screen, blue on the bench

A buyer got in touch after a bench cushion arrived.

**The buyer:** It looked black online. On my bench it's blue.

**The workshop:** The cushion matches the fabric that was ordered. Rather than a costly return trip, we can make you a new cover.

**The buyer:** And this time I want it 2 in thick.

That second request came after the first, and the exchange turned tense. Our customer care team apologized and made a new cover 2 in (5 cm) thick in a charcoal mixed weave, with matching piping and two ties on the back edge.

Two changes in two messages, and a sour week in between. Settle color and thickness in one request, friend, and ask for close-ups of any dark patterned fabric before you order. The how-to is in [fabric swatches before ordering](https://cushionguide.com/guides/fabric-swatches-before-ordering/).

## Pinned by Callum: lantern to copper pitcher

Five pins, from the iron lantern at the crown of the arch down to the copper pitcher on the tiles.

1. **Caramel bouclé cushion**: Cut to fill the plaster ledge exactly, with a soft unpiped edge that follows its curves.
2. **Rust pillow**: The warmest pillow sits at the back corner of the arch.
3. **Patchwork pillow**: Black and gray patchwork brings in pattern without adding a new color.
4. **Iron lantern**: A hanging lantern centers the arch and marks the bench as the heart of the scene.
5. **Copper pitcher**: Copper repeats the caramel of the seat on the terracotta floor.

## Reading the niche: a soft edge against old plaster

Built-in masonry benches are rarely square, and this one sits under an arch. So the caramel bouclé cushion is cut to fill the plaster ledge exactly, wall to wall, and left unpiped. A welt would draw a hard line against soft limewash. The plain box edge lets the loops of the bouclé meet the plaster like two rough surfaces that agree.

The pillows step from warm to dark. Rust sits at the back corner of the arch, where the shade is deepest and wants heat. Black and gray patchwork brings in pattern without a new color. A black bouclé lumbar repeats the seat's texture in the darkest tone.

The iron lantern hangs dead center and marks the bench as the heart of the loggia. An olive tree stands in terracotta. A copper pitcher on the hexagonal tiles repeats the caramel at floor level, so the seat color shows up twice.

The light is shaded afternoon, cool and sheltered. Keep it that way. Bouclé is an indoor cloth, and rain doesn't negotiate. A seat like this belongs under a solid roof and comes inside when the weather turns. Is your seat under a roof, or only mostly?

## One message, everything in it

1. The fabric code, typed exactly. If it came from a product photo, attach the screenshot.
2. Off-chart codes too. Some fabrics in the photos are in stock but left off the chart.
3. The thickness, in inches, in the same message as the color.
4. Piping: yes, no, or which color.
5. A daylight photo of the seat, and whether rain can reach it.
6. Back cushions, if you want them, in that same message.

## On the cutting table: the arched niche seat

| Setting | Covered niche, limewash walls, hexagonal terracotta tiles |
| Weather | Solid roof only; bring it in when the weather turns |
| Best for | Covered loggias, porches and sheltered patios |

> Black on a screen can arrive blue on the bench. Ask for daylight close-ups of any dark patterned cushion fabric before you order.

> **Tailor's margin:** One message: fabric code, thickness, piping, daylight photo. Two changes sent a day apart make for a slow week.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Can a bouclé bench cushion live on a covered patio?

Only where rain and blowing damp can't reach it. Bouclé is an indoor cloth, so a deep roof like this arched niche is the minimum, and the cushion should come inside when the weather turns or the season ends.

### Why leave the piping off a cushion for a plaster bench?

Plaster and limewash have soft, uneven edges. An unpiped box edge follows them quietly, while a welt draws a hard line that shows every place the masonry wanders.

### How do I measure a built-in masonry bench for a cushion?

Measure the length at the back wall and again at the front edge, then the depth at both ends, because masonry benches are rarely square. Send the numbers with a daylight photo so the workshop can see the curves.
