# A letter about three box cushions, stacked, and the edge each one needs

*Élodie writes from the cutting table about a caramel, a black and a geometric, and what the edge of a custom bench cushion does to color and light.*

> **The quick answer:** A box edge gives a custom bench cushion straight sides and a crisp piped outline top and bottom, so it sits level and stacks flush. A knife edge tapers to one seam and suits pillows; a wedge is thicker at the base for leaning. For angled or notched benches, order through the custom-shape listing with a drawing of every edge.

## My friends, a letter on three piped box cushions

My friends,

Three cushions are stacked on a pale oak table as I write, and the light off the plaster wall is doing what a showroom never does: telling the truth about each edge of a custom bench cushion.

On top, caramel bouclé, the color of burnt sugar a moment before it turns. Its piping is caramel too, and on a curly pile that matching cord is what gives the cushion an outline at all. Without it the loops would blur into the air around them.

In the middle, a black textured weave with a black cord. The edge is there, crisp as a pressed collar, but it keeps its voice low. Black on black is the quietest piping there is.

At the base, a black and cream geometric jacquard, piped in cream. The cord picks up the pattern's light yarn, so the eye follows the design straight to the edge. Let one color speak and the others listen; here each cushion speaks for itself, and the piping only agrees.

What makes them a family is on the right side of the stack. All three share the same box depth, so any mix of them sits level on one bench. That is the gift of a [box edge](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#boxed-edge): straight side panels, the same height everywhere, piping on the top seam and the bottom. A knife edge tapers to a single seam and would never stack this cleanly.

The eucalyptus sprig is the one cool green in a warm stack, a small breath of air. Lay two or three swatches on your own bench, under your own window, before you choose. There is more in [bouclé and teddy](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/boucle-and-teddy/), [bench cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bench-cushions/) and [box edge versus knife edge](https://cushionguide.com/guides/box-edge-vs-knife-edge-cushion/).

## Pinned by Élodie: three edges and a sprig

Five pins down the stack, from the caramel cord to the matching box depth that lets all three sit level.

1. **Caramel bouclé top**: Caramel piping gives the curly pile a clean outline.
2. **Black textured middle**: Black cord on black fabric keeps the edge crisp but quiet.
3. **Geometric jacquard base**: Cream piping picks out the pattern's light tone.
4. **Eucalyptus sprig**: One cool green note against a warm stack.
5. **Matching box depth**: Equal foam depth means any mix of the three sits level on a bench.

## Box, knife, wedge: which edge for which job

| Edge | What it looks like | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Box | Straight side panel, piped top and bottom | Bench and window seat cushions that must sit level |
| Knife | Front and back meet at one seam, thinner at the sides | Throw pillows and slim chair pads |
| Wedge | Thicker at the base than at the top | Backrests in reading nooks and on benches |
| Angled or notched | Cut to a drawing of every edge | Bay seats, benches with posts or one slanted end |

## A reading nook, a seat and a wedge

A buyer sent a photo of a reading nook, marked up in pen. They wanted a seat cushion 36 5/8 x 25 5/8 x 2 3/4 in (93 x 65 x 7 cm) and a wedge backrest 25 5/8 in (65 cm) wide, 27 1/2 in (70 cm) tall and 7 7/8 in (20 cm) deep at the base, both in L-07 with piping.

The shop quoted the pair and confirmed the details that matter: 32-density foam, about 2 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³), wrapped in polyester fiber, vacuum packing, and five to ten business days of production.

A wedge is a shape, not a thickness, so it needs its own measurements: width, height, and the thickness at the base and at the top. Give all four and the backrest leans just as you imagined it. The [shredded foam or wedge pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/back-cushion-fill-shredded-foam-vs-wedge/) explains the choice, and the [custom shape drawing pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/custom-shape-cushion-drawing/) covers the odd ones. Which edge does your bench really need?

## On the cutting table: the three-cushion stack

| | |
|---|---|
| Product | Three box-edge bench cushions, stacked for comparison |
| Fabrics | Caramel bouclé, black textured weave, black and cream geometric jacquard |
| Piping | Matched to each body: caramel, black, cream |
| Edge | Box, same foam depth on all three |
| Wedge specs | Width, height, base and top thickness |
| Odd shapes | Custom-shape listing plus a drawing of every edge |
| Setting | Pale oak tabletop, warm plaster wall, eucalyptus |
| Best for | Mixing two or three fabrics on one long bench |

## Buyer questions: timing, price and a bench with divots

**A common question:** How long does a custom cushion take to make and deliver?

**The workshop's answer:** Simple bench cushions are the quickest to make; more custom pieces, such as custom velvet or a patterned fabric, take longer, and delivery comes on top. Ask the workshop for current times in writing before you count back from a date; for the reading-nook pair above, production was quoted at five to ten business days.

**A common question:** How is the price of a custom bench cushion worked out?

**The workshop's answer:** By size and shape. When you pick the size range on the listing, the current price appears, and the quote states the shipping cost. Long corduroy runs, trapezoids and multi-piece sets sit at the higher end.

**A common question:** How do I order an irregular shape, like a bench with notches or one slanted side?

**The workshop's answer:** Use the custom-shape listing. Select the size options from the longest length and the deepest depth, then upload a drawing with every edge measured and a photo of the space at checkout. A paper sketch is fine; if it is hard to read, the shop asks for a larger one with each edge clearly labeled, then cuts precisely to it.

> Box cushions with the same foam depth stack flush and sit level on one bench, so caramel, black and a geometric can share it without a step.

> **Tailor's margin:** Specify a wedge backrest by four numbers: width, height, base thickness and top thickness. Miss one and the lean changes.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Can a knife-edge cushion stack level with box cushions?

Not neatly. A knife edge tapers from the center to a single seam, so it is thinner at the sides than in the middle. Box cushions have straight side panels of equal height, which is why the three here sit flush.

### Why does caramel bouclé look best with caramel piping?

On a looped pile, a matching cord draws a clean outline without adding a new color, so the texture stays the main event. A contrast cord would pull the eye to the seam and away from the soft surface.

### How do I choose between three fabrics for one bench?

Lay the swatches side by side on the actual bench, in your own daylight. Check that each piping suits its fabric, and let one fabric lead while the others support it, the way the caramel leads this stack.
