# A burnt orange velvet window seat cushion, tested by kids, dogs and sun

*A sunroom seat looks its best the day it's photographed. I'd rather tell you how it looks in year three, after the grandkids, the dog and a few hundred afternoons of sun.*

> **The quick answer:** A burnt orange velvet window seat cushion holds up to family life best when the cover zips off and the color sits mid-tone. Velvet has no stain-repellent coating, so blot spills with a dry cloth and machine wash the cover at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle. In a sunroom, expect sun through glass to soften any dyed pile over time.

## Orange across from green: why this sunroom seat glows

Every sunroom seat gets two tests: the view on day one and the juice box on day two.

The [window seat cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/window-seat-cushions/) runs the full width of a white paneled box under tall multi-pane windows, in burnt orange [velvet](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/velvet/). Out the glass sits a striped lawn and a wall of hedge. Orange lies straight across the color wheel from all that green, which is why the seat glows even on a plain morning.

The piping is off-white, the same paint-white as the box and the window bars. The edge gets its crisp line, and nobody had to bring a third color into the room.

Everything else is earth and paper: a jute rug over stone tile, a small wooden side table with a folded newspaper, a pressed-flower print, sheer white curtains, a glazed door to the yard. The side table is my favorite prop. A seat with somewhere to set down a cup is a seat people stay on.

To copy it, take the cushion color from the far side of the color wheel to your view, then match the piping to your trim. What does your window look out on? More rooms built around a view live under [sunroom cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/sunroom-cushions/), and the Pattern on [window seat fading](https://cushionguide.com/guides/window-seat-cushion-fading-sun/) covers the sun.

## Pinned by Rosa: five spots on a garden-view seat

Five pins run from the off-white piping and the burnt orange velvet to the jute rug, the side table with its paper and the botanical print above.

1. **Off-white piping**: Piping matched to the painted box defines the edge without adding a third color.
2. **Burnt orange velvet**: Terracotta glows against the green lawn framed in the windows.
3. **Jute rug**: Natural fiber underfoot keeps the scheme earthy.
4. **Side table and paper**: A small wooden table makes the seat a place to linger.
5. **Botanical print**: The pressed-flower print links the room to the garden outside.

## The daily-life test: how burnt orange velvet will age

| What happens | What the velvet does | What I'd do |
|---|---|---|
| Juice or coffee spill | No stain-repellent coating, so a spill soaks in if it sits | Blot with a dry cloth, then wash the zip-off cover at 86°F (30°C), gentle |
| Dog hair and crumbs | They sit on the pile; a mid-tone hides them | Brush or vacuum weekly |
| Kids kneeling at the glass | The pile flattens where knees land | Smooth it with your palm; turn the cushion now and then |
| Afternoon sun | Sun through glass is hard on any dyed pile | Draw the sheers in the strongest hours |

## A 154.5 in window seat, two cushions and one careless knife

A buyer in the US wrote to the workshop about a built-in window seat 154.5 in (392 cm) long and 22 in (56 cm) deep. Nearly thirteen feet of seat. They had corduroy in mind, and the workshop quoted velvet too.

The workshop asked for the size of each piece, and the seat became two identical cushions of 77.25 x 22 in (196 x 56 cm), ordered through the closest menu size with the exact numbers in the personalization box.

The cushions fit like they'd grown there. The trouble came at the door: they arrived tightly shrink-wrapped with no protective layer, and the knife used to open them cut the covers. The workshop offered new covers at cost. The family kept the cushions and later came back to order for their other benches.

Two lessons, neighbor. Split a very long seat into equal pieces; our Pattern on [one piece or two](https://cushionguide.com/guides/long-bench-cushion-one-piece-or-two/) shows where. And cut only the outer plastic of a vacuum pack, blade angled away from the fabric.

## Buyer questions: softer tops, back pillows and a bench that isn't square

**A common question:** Could you add a layer of batting over the foam so the seat feels softer on top?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. A 3/4 in (2 cm) layer of volume batting over the foam was confirmed for a custom cushion of about 15 3/4 x 44 x 4 in (40 x 112 x 10 cm).

**A common question:** How should I size the back pillows for an L-shaped dining bench?

**The workshop's answer:** On the short wall, the back line is its seat length plus the long side's seat depth, minus the corner pillow: 48 3/8 + 22 1/2 in (123 + 57 cm) gave about 70 7/8 in (180 cm). The workshop suggested three 31 1/8 in (79 cm) pillows on the 93 1/4 in (237 cm) wall and two of about 32 1/2 in (82–83 cm) on the short one, all 15 3/4 in (40 cm) tall. One long back cushion isn't cheaper, and two or three per wall stay put better.

**A common question:** My bench is a touch deeper at one end than the other. Can you make it to that exact shape?

**The workshop's answer:** A trapezoid is possible, but with ends of 16 5/16 in and 16 15/16 in (41.5 and 43 cm), both long sides can't stay at 41 in (104 cm). For a difference that small, the workshop recommended a plain rectangle of 41 x 16 1/2 in (104 x 42 cm).

## On the cutting table: the garden-room seat

| | |
|---|---|
| Product | Window seat cushion, rectangle, box edge |
| Fabric | Velvet in burnt orange |
| Piping | Contrast off-white, matched to the painted box |
| Care | Zip-off cover; blot spills, gentle wash at 86°F (30°C) |
| Very long seats | Equal pieces, e.g. two at 77.25 x 22 in (196 x 56 cm) |
| Opening the pack | Cut the outer plastic only |
| Best for | View-facing rooms and families who really sit |

> **Tailor's margin:** Open a vacuum-packed cushion by cutting the outer plastic only. One knife stroke too deep can slice straight through a brand-new cover.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Will burnt orange velvet fade on a sunroom window seat?

Sun through glass is hard on any dyed pile, and a sunroom gets plenty of it. Drawing sheer curtains in the strongest hours and turning the cushion now and then spreads the wear evenly.

### Is velvet sensible on a window seat with kids and a dog?

It can be, as long as the cover zips off. The velvet has no stain-repellent coating, so the protection is blotting fast and washing the cover at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle. A mid-tone like burnt orange hides crumbs far better than cream.

### Why is the piping on the orange seat off-white instead of orange?

Off-white piping matches the painted box and window bars, so the cushion edge is drawn cleanly without adding a third color. Orange self piping would soften the outline, and a dark contrast would pull the eye away from the view.
