# A burnt orange lattice daybed cushion on walnut, ordered by the code

*Hana reads a walnut daybed with a curved end and a woven lattice on top, then sets out the messages that name a fabric so nobody has to guess.*

> **The quick answer:** Order a daybed cushion by fabric code, not color name, writing the body code and the piping code separately. Send the exact width, depth and thickness before asking for a quote, and include a daylight photo of the frame if the color must match it. If a color isn't made in the fabric you want, ask for the two closest codes.

The Berber rug echoes its lines in a quieter voice.")

## Pinned by Hana: five marks on the walnut daybed

Five pins move from the lattice top to the curved walnut end, the pampas and the rug that answers the pattern.

1. **Lattice jacquard top**: A bold woven lattice suits a daybed because the top is seen from above as much as from the side.
2. **Unpiped box edge**: Leaving out piping lets the pattern continue unbroken over the sides.
3. **Curved walnut end**: The cushion is cut square to sit inside the curved walnut rail without gaps.
4. **Pampas in jug**: Pampas repeats the cream ground of the weave and adds soft height.
5. **Berber rug**: Fine dark diamonds on the rug echo the lattice without competing with its color.

## A trundle bed, a frame color, and piping in another fabric

A buyer got in touch about a trundle bed used as a daytime sofa. The mattress was 35⅜ x 74¾ x 9⅞ in (90 x 190 x 25 cm). They wanted a mattress cover and back cushions, matched to the color of the bed frame.

They sent photos. From those, the shop suggested fabric 931 for the base. The back cushions were set at 12⅝ to 13⅜ in (32 to 34 cm) high, which is the sofa part of a [daybed styled like a sofa](https://cushionguide.com/guides/daybed-back-cushions-sofa-look/).

Then a small, good decision. The buyer chose olive green velvet for the piping on the structured 931 base. Piping can be a different fabric from the body, so a stiffer cloth can carry a soft velvet edge.

Photos. A code. A height. That was the whole conversation.

## Why a woven lattice belongs on a daybed

A daybed mattress is seen from above more than from the side. That is why a strong pattern works here. The top does the job a throw would otherwise do.

This [daybed cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/daybed-cushions/) is a lattice [jacquard](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/jacquard-and-damask/): burnt orange and rust lines, a little plum, on a cream ground. Because the pattern is woven in, not printed, it stays sharp where people sit.

There is no piping. The box edge is left plain so the lattice runs over the sides without a break. A welt would draw a line through it.

The cushion is cut square and sits inside the curved walnut end rail with no gap. The curve belongs to the frame. The cushion does not try to follow it.

The warm tones of the weave meet the walnut halfway. The cream ground keeps the whole thing from turning dark against the cream plaster wall. One cream jug of pampas repeats that ground and adds soft height. The Berber-style rug has fine dark diamonds that echo the lattice in a quieter voice, pale enough not to compete for color.

What is the warmest color in your wood? Match the pattern to that, and keep the rest cream.

A pattern seen from above.
A frame left to curve.
Nothing else asked to speak.

## Ordering by code: four messages, in order

1. **Name the fabric by code**: Color names change from shop to shop. The chart code does not. Write the body code and the piping code on separate lines.
2. **Ask for the two closest**: If the color you want isn't made in the fabric you want, ask for the two nearest shades in that fabric, with their codes. Then order swatches of both.
3. **Send the sizes before the quote**: Exact width, depth and thickness of every cushion, and the height of any back cushions. The quote is built from those numbers.
4. **Show the frame in daylight**: If the cushion must match wood or paint, send daylight photos of the frame. A suggestion made from a photo can still be checked against a swatch.

## Buyer questions: velvet, linen and the question of 920

**A common question:** Can the Hemnes daybed cover set be made in velvet rather than corduroy?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, the full set can be made in velvet. The shop sends its velvet color chart and asks for the exact width, depth and thickness of your cushions before it quotes.

**A common question:** Does the Hemnes cover with round backrests come in linen, or only corduroy?

**The workshop's answer:** It can be made in linen. You pick the color from the linen chart.

**A common question:** Is color 920 available in linen? And what kind of fabric is 920?

**The workshop's answer:** There is no exact linen match, so the shop sends the two closest linen shades with their codes. 920 itself is a durable polyester weave in a warm golden mustard. The cover comes off and machine washes at 86°F (30°C) on a delicate cycle, and customers haven't complained about it.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Why skip piping on a patterned daybed cushion?

Piping draws a line around every edge. On a bold woven pattern, that line cuts the design at the seam. Leaving it off lets the pattern run over the sides without a break, so the cushion reads as one piece.

### How do I choose a daybed cushion color for a wood frame?

Find the warmest color in the wood and pick a fabric whose warm tone matches it, like rust and burnt orange against walnut. Keep the pieces around it cream so the pattern and the wood lead together.

### Does a daybed cushion have to follow a curved end rail?

No. A square-cut cushion can sit inside a curved rail, as long as it is measured to the inside of the frame. The curve stays part of the furniture, and the cushion keeps simple corners that are easy to cover.

### Is jacquard a good fabric for a daybed?

Its pattern is woven into the cloth, so it cannot rub off the way a print can. Heavy jacquards make durable upholstery; loose ones with long floating threads can snag, so check the weave on a swatch first.
