# A burnt orange corduroy window seat cushion, and a letter about where your money should go

*Pull up a chair. This close-up shows a rust window seat cushion the way I'd show it to you on my porch: turned over in my hands, seams first, price last.*

> **The quick answer:** On a custom window seat cushion, spend where you sit: an exact fit, good seating foam and a finish that holds its shape. Save where the price hides: two rectangles cost less than diagonal-cut corners, one piece costs less than several of the same size, and thickness moves the price less than length and width do.

## A letter about that rust cushion

Dear neighbor,

You asked me where to put your money on a [custom window seat cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/window-seat-cushions/), so I pulled this photograph out of the pile. It answers half the question by itself.

Look how low the camera sits. You can read the whole construction: wide wales running front to back across the top, turning upright on the side band, and self piping cut from the same cord, so the seam looks like a string of beads. That turn of the wale is the first thing a careful eye checks on [corduroy](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/corduroy/), and it is exactly what made to measure should buy you.

The rest of the picture is plain on purpose. White paint on the ledge, a white casement, a plain white vase, and a few dried wheat and grass stems that repeat the rust in a paler, natural tone. One warm color, and everything else stepping back. On a gray afternoon that seat still looks like somebody lit a fire. A firm box cushion like this also softens a hard window ledge without turning it into a sofa, which is why I'd put one in any [living room](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/living-room-cushions/) with a deep sill.

Now, the money. I've spent a lot of years on porches listening to families argue about cushions, and the arguments always come down to the same few choices. I've laid them out below the way I'd lay them on the kitchen table. Before you ask for a price, read [what to send first](https://cushionguide.com/guides/custom-cushion-quote-what-to-send/) so the quote comes back right the first time.

So tell me: how long is the window you want to cover, end to end?

## Pinned by Rosa

Five places in this close-up where the care shows.

1. **Self corded piping**: Piping cut from the same cord gives a beaded edge that follows the wale.
2. **Upright wales on boxing**: Ribs run upright on the side panel and front to back on top for a tidy finish.
3. **Seat top wales**: Wide wales catch the light and show the cushion's firm, flat top.
4. **White vase**: A plain white vase keeps rust as the only warm note.
5. **Dried stems**: Dried wheat echoes the burnt orange in a paler, natural tone.

## Where to spend, where to save

| Choice | Spend or save | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Fit | Spend | Length and width drive the price, so measure once and carefully. |
| Thickness | Worry less | In one quote, 3 in and 4 in (7.5 and 10 cm) cost the same. |
| Corners | Save | Two rectangles cost less than two diagonal-cut trapezoids and fit more reliably. |
| Pieces | Save | One piece costs less than several of the same area: fewer cuts, seams and zippers. |
| Plain top | Spend, for a sleek look | Plain, crease-free seats use seating foam and cost more than tufted ones. |
| Grip | Spend | A non-slip bottom, on request, keeps the seat from creeping on a painted ledge. |

## Nearly ten feet of green corduroy in one piece

A buyer messaged the workshop wanting two cushions in water-green corduroy, both non-tufted: a bay window cushion of 24 3/8 x 117 3/4 in (62 x 299 cm) and a square floor cushion of 39 3/8 x 39 3/8 in (100 x 100 cm). That window run is nearly ten feet long, and the first worry was whether it had to be split. It didn't. The workshop confirmed both pieces could be made, the long one in a single length, and when the original listing went offline for an update, it sent a fresh working link so the order could go through.

I like this story for the money lesson. One long piece meant no join to sit on and a clean, unbroken top, and the non-tufted finish gave the sleek look they wanted without a button in sight.

## Buyer questions: grip, L-shaped benches and plain white

**A common question:** Can my cushion have a non-slip bottom? We'd rather the seat didn't slide around.

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, a non-slip bottom is available on request. One trapezoid cushion was ordered at no more than about 2 1/2 in (6.5 cm) thick, with piping and a non-slip bottom. Floor sofa base covers come with a white non-slip backing, and if that backing ever crumbles or flakes, photograph it and send the photo to the workshop.

**A common question:** Should my L-shaped bench cushion be one piece or two? I'd need the seat and the back.

**The workshop's answer:** Usually two pieces, for a better fit and easier handling, though it can be made your way. Send a sketch of the layout with measurements, for example 63 x 72 in (160 x 183 cm) with a 20 in (51 cm) depth, and say whether you need back cushions too.

**A common question:** Do you have a plain white fabric, something like a white canvas?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. L-01 on the linen color chart is white. It has been made with matching L-01 piping, and with contrasting yellow L-49 piping for a brighter edge.

> A custom window seat cushion is priced mainly by its length and width, not only its thickness, so measure the run carefully before you trim an inch to save.

> **Tailor's margin:** On a corduroy window seat, ask for the wales to run front to back on top and upright on the side band. The piped edge then looks beaded, not busy.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Is corduroy a good choice for an indoor window seat cushion?

Yes. Wide-wale corduroy gives a firm box cushion a warm, textured top and a beaded edge when it is piped in the same cord. Plan the wale direction: front to back on the seat and upright on the side band, so the light falls evenly.

### Can a very long window seat cushion be made in one piece?

Yes. A run of 117 3/4 in (299 cm) was confirmed as a single piece. One piece means no join to sit on and costs less than several cushions of the same area. For L-shaped seats, two pieces usually fit better and are easier to handle.

### Is white practical for a window seat cushion?

White linen, L-01 on the chart, is available and can be piped to match or in a contrasting yellow. It looks crisp against painted trim. On a seat the whole family uses every day, a warm mid-tone like burnt orange is more forgiving.
