# Burnt orange chair cushions with ties on a bistro set, in three kinds of light

*Evening sun flatters orange. A gray morning tests it. A phone screen does whatever it likes. Here is how to choose a chair pad color that survives all three.*

> **The quick answer:** Pick an outdoor chair cushion color from a swatch in daylight, not from a screen, because the same fabric photographs differently in different light. Look at the swatch where the chairs stand, in the morning and again at the hour you sit out. Ties can be selected at checkout on the dining chair cushion listing.

## Two chairs, one cup, a garden leaning in

Two folding bistro chairs on a flagstone path, a round table between them, one white cup on a saucer, and a cottage garden crowding in from every side. The cushions are burnt orange [chair pads](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/dining-chair-cushions/) in [outdoor acrylic](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/outdoor-acrylic/), cut as box pads, and they are thicker than you would expect on chairs this small. That is deliberate. A slatted metal seat is fine for a sip and unkind for a second cup; a proper box pad turns it into a place to stay.

Look at where the color sits. Coral geraniums on one side, lavender and pink roses on the other, climbers on the house wall behind. Burnt orange lands between the coral and the pink, so the pads look planted rather than placed. Self piping keeps the box edge crisp without adding a color the garden did not already have.

The bow ties are the working detail. Same fabric, tied at the back uprights, so they hold the pad and trim it at once. Folding chairs get folded, and pads that untie in seconds come indoors before the dew does. The single cup sets the scale; the pot of thyme says someone cooks out here.

And the light, low and gold, is evening. Which is exactly why you should not choose this orange in it alone. I once picked a porch cushion from a catalog under a desk lamp, dear. It arrived the color of a traffic cone. So tell me: what time of day do you actually sit outside? For small seats like these, see [bistro chair cushions](https://cushionguide.com/concepts/bistro-chair-and-bar-stool-cushions/), and before you trust any orange, read [screen versus daylight](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-color-screen-vs-daylight/).

## Pinned by Maggie: the pad, the bow and the flowers

Five pins, from the thick box pad to the geraniums that carry its color into the beds.

1. **Thick box pad**: Thicker than usual, so a slatted bistro seat is comfortable for long.
2. **Bow tie**: Ties undo quickly so pads can come indoors.
3. **Second chair pad**: A matching pair keeps the small set coherent.
4. **Coffee cup**: One cup on the table sets the scale of the scene.
5. **Coral geraniums**: Flowers bridge the orange cushions into the planting.

## Right, then: a color checklist for three kinds of light

- ✓ The screen. Treat it as a rumor. Listing photos and review photos are shot in different light, and the same fabric can look warmer in one than the other.
- ✓ Morning. Take the swatch outside early and hold it against the chair frame and the stone underfoot.
- ✓ Evening. Check it again at the hour you actually sit out. That is the light the pad will live in.
- ✓ The neighbors. Lay the swatch beside your flowers. Burnt orange between coral and pink reads as planted.
- ✓ The ties. If the chairs fold, choose ties that undo quickly so the pads come in.

## The lounge chair that needed three shapes

A buyer messaged the workshop about a lounge chair that needed three cushions: a headrest about 13 x 29 1/8 x 4 7/8 in (33 x 74 x 12.5 cm), a middle cushion about 23 5/8 x 17 3/4 x 3 in (60 x 45 x 7.5 cm), and a trapezoid seat about 26 3/8 in (67 cm) across the front, 22 1/2 in (57 cm) across the back and 22 7/8 in (58 cm) deep.

The trapezoid first went through the listing made for rectangles, so it was reordered through the trapezoid listing with the sketch uploaded. Then came my favorite question: which edge of the middle cushion faces the chair back? That answer put the zipper on the 23 5/8 in (60 cm) edge, out of sight. All three pieces shipped together.

Say which edge faces the chair back. It costs one sentence and saves a zipper in plain view.

## Small seats, ties and tapered chairs

**A common question:** Do you make small seat pads, like a 20 x 20 in chair cushion 5 in thick?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Small sizes are made to measure all the time: a 20 x 20 x 5 in cushion, a 22 x 14 in pad, a chair cushion about 17 3/8 x 16 1/2 in (44 x 42 cm), or four 26 x 26 in cushions each in a different color. Send the sizes and the workshop quotes them.

**A common question:** Can each dining chair cushion have two straps so I can tie it on?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Order through the dining chair cushion listing, where ties are an option you select at checkout, so there is nothing extra to write in.

**A common question:** My wooden chair seats are wider at the front than the back. Can you still make cushions?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, tapered chair cushions are no trouble. Order through the chair cushion listing and upload a simple sketch or photo with the front width, back width and depth, so the shape comes out right.

## On the cutting table

| | |
|---|---|
| Cushion | Two matching chair pads, box edge |
| Fabric | Burnt orange outdoor acrylic |
| Piping | Self piping |
| Thickness | Cut thicker than usual for small slatted bistro chairs |
| Ties | Bow ties at the back uprights; selectable at checkout |
| Zipper | On the edge that faces the chair back |
| Tapered seats | Send front width, back width and depth |
| Color check | Swatch outdoors, morning and evening |
| Best for | Bistro sets, folding patio chairs, porch dining |

> Check an outdoor cushion swatch twice before ordering: once in morning daylight, once at the hour you actually sit outside. A screen is only a rumor.

> **Tailor's margin:** If your bistro chairs fold, choose tie-on chair pads with bows at the back uprights, so they untie in seconds and come inside.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Why are bistro chair pads cut thicker than usual?

Small folding bistro chairs often have slatted metal seats. A thicker box pad makes that seat comfortable for a long coffee, where a thin pad only covers the metal and is forgotten after the first sip.

### Will the fabric look the same as the photo on my screen?

Not always. Listing and review photos are taken in different light, and the same piping has photographed gold in one shot and not in another. A swatch held in your own light is the only fair test.

### How do I order a trapezoid seat for a lounge chair?

Use the trapezoid listing, not the rectangular one, and upload a sketch with the front, back and depth. A seat 26 3/8 in (67 cm) at the front and 22 1/2 in (57 cm) at the back was reordered exactly that way.

### Where should the zipper go on a chair pad?

On the edge that faces the chair back, so it stays out of sight. Say which edge that is when you order; it saves a question later and keeps the zipper away from the front edge.
