# A burgundy window seat cushion, a box edge and three questions about shape

*Some cushions I read from the photo alone. This one starts with questions, because what people ask about edges tells you what they worry about.*

> **The quick answer:** A window seat cushion in a strong color like burgundy looks tailored with a box edge and piping matched to the wall, here a light gray. A box edge keeps the sides straight and square inside a built-in, while a knife edge is softer and thinner at the rim. If your size isn't listed, order the exact size or the nearest one just under it.

## Buyer questions first: a long seat, a coarse weave and a size in between

**A common question:** I need a long window bench cushion. Which fabric would you suggest for my color, and how long will it take?

**The workshop's answer:** One cushion of about 82 1/4 x 25 5/8 x 4 in (2090 x 650 x 100 mm) was quoted in the linen closest to the buyer's color, and delivery took 2 to 4 days after dispatch. Ask for your own production and delivery times in writing.

**A common question:** I want a sturdy, textured fabric that won't wrinkle the way linen does. Do the colors I picked have that coarse feel?

**The workshop's answer:** The shop photographed the exact combination, an off-white with wine-red piping, and confirmed that the textured fabric in the listing photo is the same cloth in another color. It still recommends ordering samples first, because texture is best judged in the hand.

**A common question:** My exact size isn't on the list. Should I pick the one just under it?

**The workshop's answer:** Many buyers do. For a 44 in (112 cm) space, choosing the 23 5/8 x 43 1/4 in (60 x 110 cm) size leaves a little room. Or the shop simply makes the exact size you need.

## Wine red on gray, and why the edge is boxed

Pull up a chair, because this one is a looker. A burgundy window seat cushion on a walnut-edged top, set into a gray painted nook with oak shelves above and white cabinet doors below. Overcast winter light at the tall window. The kind of seat that says stay a while.

The edge is the story. This cushion is box-edged: flat top, flat bottom, straight sides, piping on the seams. In a built-in, that square profile fills the nook wall to wall and sits flat on the walnut edge. A knife edge, two panels sewn at a single seam, would rise in the middle and thin out toward the walls. Lovely on a loose chair pad, not so much on a seat framed by cabinetry. The difference is drawn out in [box edge vs knife edge](https://cushionguide.com/guides/box-edge-vs-knife-edge-cushion/).

Then the piping. Light gray, the same family as the walls and the herringbone pillow. That pale line stitches the wine red to the room. The walnut edge frames the burgundy from below, so the red doesn't bleed into the white doors.

Every prop has a job. The gray herringbone wool pillow lightens a heavy color. The charcoal chunky-knit throw over the front edge adds winter weight. The single cream vase on the oak shelf repeats the pale piping line up high. And burgundy forgives the odd coffee spill, which in my house is a structural requirement. What color are the walls around your window seat?

## Pinned by Rosa: five spots on the wine-red seat

Five pins, from the pale gray piping to the single cream vase that echoes it on the top shelf.

1. **Burgundy seat top**: Wine red looks rich against gray walls and forgives the odd coffee spill.
2. **Light gray piping**: Gray piping ties the seat to the walls and the herringbone pillow.
3. **Herringbone pillow**: A textured gray pillow keeps the burgundy from feeling heavy.
4. **Chunky knit throw**: Charcoal knit adds weight and winter texture across the front edge.
5. **Sculptural vase**: A single cream vase on the shelf echoes the pale piping line up high.

## Box, knife or rounded: which edge for a window seat

| Edge | What it looks like | Where it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Box edge | Flat top and bottom, straight sides, piping on the seams | Built-ins and nooks framed by walls or cabinets |
| Knife edge | Two panels joined at one seam, thinner at the rim | Loose chair pads and pillows |
| Rounded corners | Either edge, with curved corners measured by radius | Seats with a curved end or open sides |

## A headboard that had to be six inches thick

A couple wrote to the workshop wanting to hang one of the linen tufted floor cushions on the wall as a bed headboard. They measured 52 3/4 x 20 in (134 x 51 cm) and wanted it at least 6 in (15 cm) deep.

The shop told them straight: those cushions are densely filled, firm but comfortable, and usually about 4 in (10 cm) thick. For a headboard, though, it could make one at 6 in (15 cm), and it quoted that build.

I have seen what a thin cushion does on a wall. It starts to sag in the middle like a hammock on a hot afternoon. The thicker 6 in build holds its shape upright, which is the whole job of a headboard. Edge and thickness aren't decoration, neighbor. They are what keep a cushion looking like the day it came. For window seats, the same thinking is in [window seat cushion thickness](https://cushionguide.com/guides/window-seat-cushion-thickness/).

## On the cutting table: the wine-red nook

| Fabric | Burgundy linen-look |
| Edge | Box edge |
| Piping | Light gray contrast piping on the seams |
| Sits on | Walnut-edged top over white cabinet doors |
| Pillow | Gray herringbone wool |
| Throw | Charcoal chunky knit over the front edge |
| Best for | Living room window nooks with painted walls |

> **Tailor's margin:** For a cushion hung on the wall as a headboard, go 6 in (15 cm) thick, not the usual 4 in. The thicker build holds its shape.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Is a box edge or a knife edge better inside a built-in window seat?

A box edge, in most built-ins. Its straight sides fill the nook to the walls and sit square on the seat top. A knife edge rises in the middle and thins at the rim, which suits loose seats and pillows better than framed ones.

### What piping color goes with a burgundy seat?

Match the piping to the wall or a nearby textile. Light gray piping ties a burgundy seat to gray painted walls and a gray pillow, while self piping in burgundy makes the cushion read as one solid block.

### Can a tufted floor cushion work as a headboard?

Yes. One couple hung a linen tufted floor cushion measuring 52 3/4 x 20 in (134 x 51 cm) as a headboard. It was made 6 in (15 cm) thick rather than the usual 4 in (10 cm) so it would hold its shape.

### Which pillows suit a wine-red window seat?

Textured neutrals. A gray herringbone wool pillow keeps burgundy from feeling heavy, and a charcoal chunky-knit throw adds weight in winter. Keep the pale accent to one or two places, like the piping and a single vase.
