# A forest green window seat cushion, read corner first

*Pull up a chair. Here is one corner of a forest green window seat cushion in raking light, with more porch in it than you would guess.*

> **The quick answer:** A window seat cushion should be cut to the seat itself, notched around any casing or trim rather than made shallower, and chosen in a fabric you have seen in side light. This forest green linen-look box cushion with ivory piping shows why: raking window light reveals the brushed weave, and the contrast cord marks a clean, tailored corner.

![Close-up of a forest green brushed woven cushion corner with ivory piping on a white window seat](https://cushionguide.com/media/window-seat-cushions/brushed-forest-green-cushion-corner-ivory-piping-closeup-1600.webp "Up close the green shows a soft brushed surface with a faint diagonal weave, finished by a neat ivory cord at the corner.")

## What the side light gives away

I learned to read fabric on my grandmother's wraparound porch, where the five o'clock light comes in low and sideways and tells the truth. This [window seat cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/window-seat-cushions/) gets the same treatment indoors.

Up close, the green is not flat. Window light rakes across the top and picks out a brushed surface with a faint diagonal line and a little sheen. Under a ceiling light you would call it dark green and move on. In side light it is forest, with a texture you can almost feel.

Then the corner. An ivory cord turns it cleanly, no pucker, no drift, and that turn is what separates a tailored box cushion from a foam pad in a cover. The side wall runs as a straight, even band, so the front edge holds its line.

A gray linen curtain and a warm oak floor sit at the edges on purpose. They show how this [linen-look fabric](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/linen-look-fabrics/) behaves beside a cool neutral and a warm wood.

Four spots I'd put my finger on, neighbor, if we sat on this window seat together.

1. **Rounded piped corner**: The ivory cord turns the corner cleanly, the detail that separates a tailored box from a foam pad.
2. **Brushed diagonal weave**: Side light from the window reveals a soft brushed surface with a faint diagonal line.
3. **Box side wall**: The side wall is a straight, even band, so the cushion keeps its shape along the front.
4. **Gray linen curtain**: The gray drape shows how the green reads next to a cool neutral textile.

## What a window seat can borrow from the porch

Porch benches have posts, and nobody shaves a whole porch cushion shallower to clear one post; you cut around it. Window seats have the same trouble with casings and trim, and the same answer: a [notch](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#notch). The [notched cushion guide](https://cushionguide.com/guides/notched-cushion-cutouts-posts-casings/) shows how to draw one.

The porch lends one more habit. Out there, we judge fabric in the day's hardest light before we commit. Do the same inside: hold the sample beside the window, not in front of a screen.

What sits under your window right now, and does anything hang over its back edge?

## The casing that hung over the back edge

A buyer in the US had a window seat 25 x 109.25 in (63.5 x 277.5 cm), with a casing 0.75 in (1.9 cm) deep sitting 1.5 in (3.8 cm) above it. The casing stopped 6 in short of the left end and 7 in short of the right.

The easy answer was a shallower cushion, with a gap along the wall. The workshop drew a notch instead, 0.75 in deep and 96.25 in wide along the back edge, so the cushion steps around the casing and still meets the wall at both ends. It cost the same as a plain rectangle.

After several linen close-ups, the first picks too gray, the buyer chose a warm linen, 4 in thick.

## Buyer questions: length, firmness and cost

**A common question:** My window seat is longer than any size in the drop-down menu. How do I order it?

**The workshop's answer:** Pick the closest size, say 20 x 92 in for a 20 x 94 in cushion, and write your exact dimensions in the personalization box; that is what gets made. The drop-down mainly sets the price. For very long sizes, the workshop adds a custom option just for you.

**A common question:** How firm is the foam, and should I go with 3 in or 4 in?

**The workshop's answer:** Every cushion uses medium-firm high-resilience foam, about 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³), that keeps its shape for years without sagging or flattening. The 3 in (7.6 cm) option is the best seller.

**A common question:** Roughly what does a custom window seat cushion cost?

**The workshop's answer:** Price climbs with size: past quotes run from seats like 30 x 12.5 in to long runs like 24 x 102 in. Send your exact size for a quote.

> **Tailor's margin:** Hold a dark fabric sample in side light from a window before you decide. Raking light shows the weave, the sheen and the true green.

## The window seat, by the numbers

| | |
|---|---|
| Cushion | Window seat box cushion, one piece |
| Fabric | Brushed linen-look weave, forest green |
| Piping | Contrast ivory cord |
| Foam | About 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³) high-resilience, medium-firm |
| Thickness | 3 or 4 in (7.6 or 10 cm); 3 in sells most |
| Notch | Cut into the back edge where a casing overhangs |
| Best for | Window seats in reading nooks, storage benches |

## Questions buyers ask next

### Is a notch better than a shallower window seat cushion?

Usually, when trim hangs over the seat. A shallower cushion leaves a gap along the whole wall; a notch removes depth only under the casing and leaves both ends full depth.

### How should I judge a dark green fabric before ordering?

Look at a close-up or sample in side light, beside your room's materials. Screens flatten texture and shift color; the buyer above rejected the first linen picks as too gray.

### Does contrast piping suit a dark window seat cushion?

It looks very tailored. Ivory cord on forest green outlines every corner, so it rewards a straight line and shows any wander. For one quiet block of color, choose self piping.
