# A brown corduroy rainbow arch, seen from the doorway and from the floor

*Hana steps back ten feet from a nesting corduroy arch against a sage wall, then kneels beside it. Different details speak at each distance.*

> **The quick answer:** A kids floor sofa or play arch should be chosen for two distances: ten feet, where only its color steps and outline read, and one foot, where wale and seams show. This brown, sand and cream corduroy arch works at both, because the sage wall deepens the brown and the unpiped box edges keep the silhouette clean.

## Ten feet away: three bands and a wall

From the doorway, a kids floor sofa is only color and shape. Everything else waits until you kneel.

This one is a nesting rainbow arch in corduroy. Brown on the outside, sand in the middle, a cream dome at the core. At ten feet (3 m) that is all you see: three tonal steps, stacked like a child's drawing of a sunset. The steps are even, so the gradient reads smooth.

The wall does half the work. Sage deepens the brown. On a white wall the same corduroy would drift toward tan. Against muted green it turns richer, and the cream core steps forward.

Color lives higher up. Picture ledges hold children's books and small abstract prints, so the eye finds brightness at standing height and calm at floor height. A stack of wooden alphabet blocks waits to the left. It explains the arch without words: this is a building toy, taken apart and put back.

A woven storage basket. Linen curtains. A cream diamond-pattern rug. Soft materials, nothing shiny. Children measure comfort with their whole body, and everything they touch here is cloth, wood or fiber.

## Pinned by Hana

Begin at the brown outer arch, move inward to the cream dome, and finish at the block tower on the left.

1. **Brown outer arch**: Against sage, the brown corduroy looks richer than on a white wall.
2. **Sand middle arch**: A mid-tone step keeps the gradient smooth.
3. **Cream dome**: The cream core pops against the green wall.
4. **Block tower**: Stacked blocks echo the idea that the arch is a building toy.
5. **Picture ledge art**: Color lives up on the wall, leaving the arch in calm neutrals.

## One foot away: rib, nap and a plain seam

Now kneel. The corduroy shows its [wale](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#wale), the soft ribs that catch light on one side and hold shadow on the other. At this distance the brown is not one brown. It is a hundred thin lines of it.

The box edges carry no piping. From ten feet that keeps the outline clean. Up close it keeps the surface quiet: rib, seam, rib.

Nap matters here. Each arch should be cut with the ribs running the same way, or the brown looks two-toned when the pieces sit side by side. The [corduroy pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/corduroy-cushions-wale-nap-direction/) explains the direction. The [kids floor sofas atlas](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/kids-floor-sofas/) has more shapes, and the [corduroy shelf](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/corduroy/) has the colors.

What color are the walls in your child's room?

From the door, color.
From the floor, cloth.
Choose for both.

## A dog house, two cushions and a liner

A buyer in the US ordered two cushions for an insulated dog house. One was 16 x 20 x 3 in (41 x 51 x 7.5 cm). The other was 16 x 20 x 2 in (41 x 51 x 5 cm).

They asked how to protect the foam. The workshop added a [waterproof inner cover](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#waterproof-insert-cover) to both, through a separate link, and made everything together.

A playroom is not so different from a dog house. Spilled juice, damp boots, the occasional accident. A liner under the outer cover keeps the foam dry while the corduroy does the looking. Ask for one at the start, so it is made with the rest.

## Floor-sofa questions, answered plainly

**A common question:** Could you make a very narrow floor sofa, about 28 x 72 in, for a small nook?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, a custom 28 x 72 in (71 x 183 cm) version is possible. At only 28 in deep, though, the seat left in front of the backrest would be about 16 in (41 cm).

**A common question:** Two small zippered bags in the same fabric came with the sofa. What are they for?

**The workshop's answer:** They are pillowcases, made in the same fabric as the sofa and included with it.

**A common question:** Do the metal bars under the floor sofa hook onto anything?

**The workshop's answer:** No. They are free-floating, so you can place them where you like. Once someone sits on the sofa, they stay put.

> **Tailor's margin:** Keep bright color on the wall ledges, at standing height. Floor pieces in two or three calm tones let the children make the noise.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Why does brown corduroy look darker against a green wall?

Surrounding color changes how a tone is seen. A muted sage deepens warm brown and makes cream look brighter by contrast, while a white wall lifts brown toward tan. The fabric is the same; only its company changes.

### Does a floor arch for kids need piping?

Not usually. An unpiped box edge gives a soft, clean silhouette that reads calmly from across the room and keeps a surface children touch simple up close. Piping suits pieces where you want a drawn outline, such as a tailored bench.

### What does corduroy wale mean?

Wale is the raised rib that runs along corduroy. Wide wales look bolder and read from a distance; fine wales look smoother up close. Whichever you choose, every piece should be cut with the ribs running the same way so the color matches.

### Why style a rainbow arch with wooden blocks?

The blocks repeat the idea behind the arch: pieces that stack, nest and come apart. A prop that echoes how something is used explains it faster than a caption, and wood keeps the corner natural.
