# A blush striped garden bench cushion in a narrow greenhouse, fitted between the arms

*Three cushion questions first, then a teak bench among the citrus. A tight spot feels bigger when the seat does less, not more.*

> **The quick answer:** A garden bench cushion in a narrow greenhouse should fit between the arms and fill the seat depth, with no back cushion, so the slatted back stays on show and the aisle feels open. Choose a water-repellent fabric because greenhouse air is humid, and a pale blush stripe that repeats a flower you actually grow.

## Three cushion questions before the greenhouse

**A common question:** Could you make cushions for the reading benches in our office, or for a couple of classrooms?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Send a picture of the benches with the measurements of each section for a quote. The workshop has made 40 1/8 x 40 1/8 in (102 x 102 cm) corner cushions for early-learning classrooms and multi-section cushions for office benches.

**A common question:** My new cushion arrived with a crease right down the middle. Should I iron it?

**The workshop's answer:** No need. Creases from the compressed packing relax on their own within 7 to 10 days.

**A common question:** Can you make a triangle cushion for a corner bench with a 90-degree angle?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, corner and triangle cushions are regular work. Send a drawing with every edge measured, plus a photo of the corner if you can, then order on the custom-shape listing and upload both images at checkout.

## One wedge of a round sofa, ordered on its own

One buyer wrote in about one segment of a round rattan sofa on an outdoor terrace. The segment was a wedge: outer arc 43 1/4 in (110 cm), inner arc 16 7/8 in (43 cm), sides 19 3/4 in (50 cm), and 3 1/8 to 4 in (8 to 10 cm) thick.

Arcs are slippery customers. The workshop asked for one more number, the depth of the curve: 11 3/8 in (29 cm) from the middle of the inner chord out to the arc. With that it could draw the shape properly. The buyer chose smoke gray outdoor fabric 903, over HR foam.

Then the smart move. They ordered one cushion first, to check the fit before ordering the rest. In a tight space, one test piece tells you more than any drawing.

## Pinned by Callum: the teak bench under glass

Five pins, from the blush stripe on the seat to the zinc can on the stone floor.

1. **Blush stripe seat**: Blush and white stripes pick up the cut roses and look fresh against green foliage.
2. **Piped front boxing**: Piping in the stripe keeps a firm edge along the long bench front.
3. **Potted citrus tree**: Orange fruit and glossy leaves add a contrasting color to the soft pink.
4. **Trug of cut roses**: The pink roses in the basket are a direct echo of the stripe color.
5. **Zinc watering can**: A zinc can keeps the glasshouse feeling like a working space.

## Why a narrow greenhouse can feel roomy

This is a narrow spot: a teak garden bench between potted citrus and ferns, under a white-framed roof of glass. It feels generous for three reasons, and none of them is size.

First, the cushion fits between the arms, fills the seat depth, and stops there. There is no back cushion, so the slatted teak back stays on show and light passes through it. A padded back would double the visual bulk of the bench in an aisle that has none to spare.

Second, the stripe is pale. Blush and white read light against green foliage, and a light seat in a tight space takes up less room to the eye. Piping in the stripe keeps a firm edge along the long bench front, so the cushion looks tailored, not slumped.

Third, the props live on the floor, not on the seat. A wooden trug of cut pink roses sits below, repeating the blush of the stripe and warming the white glazing bars. A galvanized watering can and stacked terracotta pots keep the place feeling like a working greenhouse, and the small orange trees add the one contrasting color. The seat itself stays clear.

About the air, friend: a greenhouse is humid. A [water-repellent membrane fabric](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/water-repellent-membrane/) helps the seat stay dry to the touch, and the [sunroom fabric guide](https://cushionguide.com/guides/sunroom-cushion-fabric-humidity/) goes further into damp air. The same rules suit any [sunroom cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/sunroom-cushions/) or narrow [bench cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bench-cushions/).

Is your narrowest seat crowded by what sits on it?

## Small-space rules from this bench

- ✓ Fit the cushion between the arms and stop at the seat depth
- ✓ Leave a slatted back bare instead of adding a back cushion
- ✓ Choose a pale stripe in one flower color you actually grow
- ✓ Keep props on the floor, in clay, zinc and wicker
- ✓ Use water-repellent cloth where the air stays humid

## On the cutting table: the greenhouse bench

| | |
|---|---|
| Cushion | Rectangular bench cushion fitted between the arms, box edge |
| Fabric | Blush pink and white stripe, water-repellent membrane, code HM-37 |
| Piping | Piped in the stripe for a firm front edge |
| Depth | Fills the full seat depth |
| Back | None; the slatted teak back stays visible |
| Bench | Teak garden bench on a stone floor |
| Setting | White-framed greenhouse with potted citrus and ferns |
| Best for | Sunrooms, greenhouses and narrow covered spots |

> In a narrow greenhouse, fit the bench cushion between the arms and skip the back cushion; a bare slatted back lets the light through and keeps the bench light.

> **Tailor's margin:** Pick a pale striped bench cushion in one flower color you actually grow, and keep every other prop in clay, zinc or wicker.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Should a narrow garden bench get a back cushion too?

Not if you want the space to feel bigger. On this teak bench the seat cushion fits between the arms and the slatted back stays bare, so light passes through and the bench keeps a lighter outline in a tight aisle.

### What fabric suits a bench cushion in a humid greenhouse or sunroom?

A water-repellent fabric, which helps the seat stay dry to the touch in damp air. The blush stripe here is a water-repellent membrane cloth, piped in the same stripe to keep a firm front edge.

### How do I choose a stripe color for a greenhouse bench cushion?

Take it from a flower you actually grow. The blush pink here repeats the cut roses in the trug below the bench and warms the white glazing bars; keep the other props in clay, zinc and wicker.

### What measurements does a curved wedge cushion for a round sofa need?

The outer arc, the inner arc, both sides, the thickness and the depth of the curve. For one rattan segment that meant a curve depth of 11 3/8 in (29 cm), measured from the middle of the inner chord to the arc.
