# A letter about a blue and sand boat cushion, and the light at sea

*A square cushion on a teak cabin ledge, windows full of water. The pattern looks different every hour out there, and that is the point of this letter.*

> **The quick answer:** Choose a boat cushion color in the light it will live in: bright, reflected sea light makes white glare and washes out pale tones, so a mid-tone pattern in blue and sand reads truer. Screens and chart swatches can look darker than the real cloth, so ask for daylight photos of the actual fabric before you order.

![Square blue, beige and white geometric outdoor cushion with sand piping on a teak boat cabin seat, sea view through windows](https://cushionguide.com/media/boat-and-rv-cushions/blue-sand-geometric-boat-cabin-seat-cushion-teak-1600.webp "A square box cushion in a small geometric outdoor weave fills a teak cabin ledge, its sand piping echoing the wood.")

Thanks for the photograph. It has been propped against the coffee pot all morning.

Here is what I see. A square box cushion on a teak cabin ledge, a teak backboard behind it, white fiberglass all around. The top is a small harlequin, diamonds of slate blue and beige on white. The edge is piped in sand. Out the windows, nothing but water.

That water is the whole story. On a boat, light comes at you twice: once from the sky and once off the sea. A white cushion in that light glares like a sail at noon. Slate blue and sand hold their shape. The blue answers the water, the sand answers the teak.

The fit is honest too. The cushion butts against the backboard with no gap and stops short of the rounded teak lip, so it never hangs over to catch a knee. Boat seats are rarely standard, and this one was measured from the boat. The [boat and RV cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/boat-and-rv-cushions/) page has more like it.

## Where I put my thumb

Five spots on the photo, from the window down to the teak lip.

1. **Harlequin top panel**: Blue and sand blocks link the sea outside with the teak inside.
2. **Sand piping**: A plain cord gives the edge a definite line against white fibreglass.
3. **Rounded teak lip**: The cushion stops short of the lip so it doesn't hang over.
4. **Teak backboard**: Cushion depth is cut to butt up against it with no gap.
5. **Open water view**: Bright reflected light is why a mid-tone pattern works better than white here.

## Morning, evening, and the screen

Morning light off the water is cool and hard. It pushes the blue toward gray and makes the white cells bright. By evening the light warms and drops, the teak glows, and the sand piping looks almost gold. Same cushion. Different boat.

Then there is the screen. Chart swatches and close-up photos often look darker or coarser than the cloth itself, and new fabric tends to look cleaner and brighter than its swatch. Photos of finished cushions are the truest reference. More in [screen versus daylight](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-color-screen-vs-daylight/).

The weave matters as much as the color. The [outdoor range](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/outdoor-acrylic/) carries UV-resistant and water-repellent finishes. Water-repellent is a promise; waterproof is a contract. What does your cabin light do at six in the evening?

## A 12 in bunk cushion that nearly met the ceiling

A camper owner in the US asked for two 71 x 28 in (180 x 71 cm) cushions for the top bunk, in beige, in a linen-look weave or gray velvet. The workshop sent the velvet chart with a dark beige and a lighter beige marked, and pointed out something easy to miss: the cushion in the photo they admired was 12 in (30 cm) thick.

They kept the 12 in. A thick cushion makes a fine bed. On a top bunk, though, every inch of cushion is an inch less headroom, so measure from the bunk base to the ceiling first.

## Three outdoor cushion questions

**A common question:** Can you make my patio cushions in the brand-name outdoor canvas I've used before?

**The workshop's answer:** The workshop works with its own outdoor fabrics instead and sends stripe options to choose from. Rounded corners are possible too: one set of five 22 x 21.5 x 4 in seats, five 21.5 x 15.5 x 4 in backs, a round-cornered ottoman and two pillows was quoted that way.

**A common question:** Is there a discount when I order several cushions at once?

**The workshop's answer:** Often, yes: multi-piece orders have been quoted below the same pieces priced one by one, so send the whole list in one message. Check the quote for whether shipping is included.

**A common question:** Can you add ties so outdoor cushions don't blow away?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Ties can go on the sides, including long ties for the beach or windy spots. Write the request in the order notes, with a sketch if they belong on a particular side.

> Check a boat cushion swatch on deck at both ends of the day. Noon sea light washes out white and pale tones; a mid-tone blue and sand pattern holds true.

> **Tailor's margin:** Make a paper template of the ledge. Boat seats are rarely standard, and a cushion should stop short of a rounded lip, not hang over it.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Do outdoor cushion fabrics fade in strong sun?

The outdoor range carries UV- and fade-resistant finishes made for sun. Indoor fabrics such as velvet, linen and corduroy have limited UV resistance and can fade in strong, prolonged sun, so keep them for cabins and covered spaces.

### How big are fabric swatches, and how long do they take?

Swatches are roughly palm-sized, about 4 to 6 in (10 to 15 cm) square; ask when they'll ship. They carry no code labels, but exactly the codes you ordered are sent.

### Can a boat cushion be made from a paper template?

Yes. Trace the seat or ledge onto paper, cut it out, write the key measurements on it and photograph it flat from above with a tape measure in view. The workshop checks the shape with you before cutting.
