# Sky blue outdoor cushions on a corner patio, and a drawing read back line by line

*Buyer questions go first, then the drawing, then the photo. That drawing is the reason every number gets read back before anyone quotes.*

> **The quick answer:** For an L-shaped outdoor bench, send a drawing with every piece's length, depth and thickness, say which way the L turns, and say whether the corner seat has a back on one side or two. Box cushions cut level with the frame rails keep the edge visible. Very long bolsters are split, as one 141 3/4 in (360 cm) run was.

## Buyer questions first: brand names and whole-set quotes

**A common question:** Can my patio cushions be made in Sunbrella fabric?

**The workshop's answer:** Not in that brand. The workshop sews outdoor cushions in its own outdoor fabrics and sent stripe options to choose from. The set in question was five 22 x 21 1/2 x 4 in (56 x 55 x 10 cm) seats, five 21 1/2 x 15 1/2 x 4 in (55 x 39 x 10 cm) backs, an ottoman with rounded corners and two pillows.

**A common question:** Can you quote a full set of custom seat and back cushions for my garden bench from a plan?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Send the plan with every size. Multi-piece outdoor sets get bulk reductions: one garden bench set with seat and back cushions came down for bulk, and again when the backrests were switched to foam-filled, and a concrete bench needing 12 seat and back pieces, 3 in (7.5 cm) thick, was discounted too.

## Eight pieces, one drain and a bolster in two

A buyer sent millimeter drawings for a big built-in [patio](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/patio-and-porch-cushions/) bench: four seat cushions and four bolsters, one seat with a cutout around a drain.

The seats measured 23 5/8 x 81 7/8 in (60 x 208 cm), 25 5/8 x 74 in (65 x 188 cm), 25 5/8 x 39 in (65 x 99 cm) and 25 3/8 x 116 1/8 in (64.5 x 295 cm). The bolsters ran 23 5/8, 74, 36 5/8 and 141 3/4 in (60, 188, 93 and 360 cm).

The workshop read the drawing back as a list and found the gaps: no thickness, no bolster diameter, no cutout size, and one length that disagreed with another. It flagged the extra-long pieces. The buyer chose 3 in (7.5 cm) seats and 7 7/8 in (20 cm) bolsters, with the 141 3/4 in bolster made in two pieces. Close-ups of two neighboring outdoor shades went out, one for the seats and one for the bolsters, and the quote was adjusted as the pieces settled.

## Reading a big drawing back, line by line

1. **Number every piece**: Seats 1 to 4, bolsters 1 to 4. Each gets length and depth, or length and diameter.
2. **Find the blanks**: Thickness, bolster diameter and cutout size were missing from the first drawing.
3. **Settle the conflicts**: When two lengths disagree, ask before anyone cuts foam.
4. **Flag the long pieces**: Anything very long gets a split; the longest bolster became two.
5. **Choose from close-ups**: Neighboring outdoor shades look alike on a chart, so compare real photos.

## Pinned by Callum: the corner, the pots, the lantern

Five pins: the sky blue seat, the coral pillows, the round table, the potted hydrangeas and the brass lantern.

1. **Sky blue seat cushion**: Box cushions sit level with the teak rails, so the frame edge stays visible.
2. **Coral and peach pillows**: Coral repeats the terracotta pots and the pink hydrangeas.
3. **Lemonade on round table**: A round table keeps knees clear in the corner of an L.
4. **Potted blue hydrangeas**: Blue blooms echo the cushions; pink ones echo the pillows.
5. **Brass wall lantern**: Evening light means the corner is used after dark, so mid-tone blue beats white.

## Reading the corner patio

The box cushions sit level with the teak rails, so the frame's edge stays part of the look. That is a measuring decision, not a styling one: cut the seats to the inside of the rails and to the rail height.

The pillow colors are lifted straight from the planting and the table. Coral and peach come from the terracotta pots and the pink hydrangeas, navy from the siding, mustard and pale yellow from the lemonade. The blue hydrangeas answer the sky blue cushions.

The round teak table is the quiet choice that matters most. In the corner of an L, a round top leaves room for knees where a square one would not. The brass wall lantern says this corner gets used after dark, one more reason the seat is a mid-tone blue rather than white.

Water-repellent is a promise; waterproof is a contract. The outdoor fabric here is woven with water-repellent and UV/fade-resistant finishes, and it still comes indoors in the off-season. The cloth is in [outdoor acrylic and solution-dyed](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/outdoor-acrylic/), the shape in [outdoor cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/outdoor-cushions/), the corner math in [L-shaped bench cushion measurements](https://cushionguide.com/guides/l-shaped-bench-cushion-measurements/), and the fabric question in [water-repellent vs waterproof](https://cushionguide.com/guides/water-repellent-vs-waterproof-cushions/).

Which way does your L turn, friend?

| Off-season | Store indoors; protectant spray between seasons |
| Best for | Corner patios and built-in outdoor benches |

> **Tailor's margin:** A 141 3/4 in (360 cm) bolster is easier to make and handle in two pieces. Mark the split on your drawing.

## Questions buyers ask next

### What should a drawing for a built-in outdoor bench show?

Every piece numbered, with length, depth and thickness, bolster diameters, the size and position of any cutout, and where pieces meet at corners. On one large bench drawing, thickness, bolster diameter and cutout size were the missing figures.

### Are outdoor cushion fabrics waterproof?

They are water-repellent, with UV/fade-resistant finishes, which is not the same thing. Water-repellent cloth sheds a shower; it is not a sealed cover. Store outdoor cushions indoors in the off-season and use a fabric protectant spray.

### How thick should outdoor bench cushions be?

Outdoor quotes start from 4 in (10 cm). One large built-in bench went thinner, at 3 in (7.5 cm), with 7 7/8 in (20 cm) bolsters along the back. Check seat height and how much back support you want before you choose.
