# A black window seat cushion, a houndstooth pillow and the one warm thing that makes it work

*Rosa reads a graphic black-and-white window seat and the handful of props that keep it from feeling cold, and shows how to copy it with what's already in the closet.*

> **The quick answer:** A black window seat cushion on white paneling needs one warm material to keep it from feeling cold. Here a cognac faux leather pillow does that job, echoed by dried wheat on the sill, while a small-scale houndstooth pillow adds pattern in the same black and white and a gray knit throw softens the long edge.

## Pinned by Rosa

Pins sit on the houndstooth, the cognac pillow, the black box cushion, the wheat on the sill and the gray throw.

1. **Houndstooth pillow**: Black-and-white pattern at a small scale, next to the plain black seat.
2. **Cognac leather pillow**: The one warm material that stops the monochrome scheme feeling cold.
3. **Black box cushion**: A solid black linen-look weave with self piping, graphic against white paneling.
4. **Dried wheat vase**: Wheat stems repeat the cognac tone up on the sill.
5. **Gray knit throw**: Breaks the long black edge where it meets the frame.

## Black, white, and one warm thing

Pull up a chair, because this window seat taught me something about restraint.

A black window seat cushion on white paneling is about as graphic as a room gets. Solid black linen-look weave, box edge, self piping, sitting on a white bench front in bright daylight. Handsome. Also a little chilly, the way a new church pew is chilly before anybody has sat in it.

So the styling adds exactly one warm material: a cognac faux leather pillow. That is the whole fix. Up on the sill, a matte black vase holds dried wheat stems in nearly the same tawny color, so the warmth shows up twice and looks planned instead of accidental.

The houndstooth pillow is the clever one, neighbor. It stays in black and white, same as the seat, but at a much smaller scale. Big plain black below, busy little check above. Pattern without adding a single new color.

Then the soft things. A heather gray knit throw falls over the far end, breaking that long black edge where the cushion meets the frame. A gray fringed blanket waits in the corner for when the afternoon cools off. Throws on a window seat aren't decoration in my house; they're a promise that somebody will stay a while.

If you love the look but have little ones, read up on [kid-friendly cushion fabric](https://cushionguide.com/guides/kid-friendly-cushion-fabric/) first. The shapes are among the [window seat cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/window-seat-cushions/), and the cloth waits on the [linen-look fabrics](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/linen-look-fabrics/) shelf.

## Copy the window seat, prop by prop

1. Start with a solid seat in one strong color; here, black with self piping.
2. Add one pillow in the same colors at a smaller scale, like black-and-white houndstooth.
3. Add one pillow in a warm material, like cognac faux leather.
4. Repeat that warm tone once, somewhere higher: dried wheat, a wooden bowl, a leather-bound book.
5. Break the long front edge with a knit throw over one end.
6. Keep a spare blanket folded in the corner for cool evenings.

## The backrest that lost four inches on paper

A buyer got in touch while building an L-shaped floor sofa in linen color 23. One side was a 27½ x 47¼ in (70 x 120 cm) seat with a full backrest. The other was a 27½ x 55 in (70 x 140 cm) seat with only a short 27½ in (70 cm) backrest at the end. Round armrest pillows came with both.

When the custom listing arrived, that short backrest read 23½ in (60 cm). The buyer spotted it and said so, and the shop changed it to 27½ in (70 cm) before payment. Four inches doesn't sound like much until your shoulder finds the edge of the backrest.

A careful buyer is the best proofreader we have. Read every size on a custom listing before you pay, and if a size isn't on the menu, the [custom size cushion](https://cushionguide.com/guides/custom-size-cushion-not-on-menu/) pattern shows how to ask.

## Buyer questions: messy kids, long seats and marked-up photos

**A common question:** We have messy kids. What fabric would you suggest for banquette cushions?

**The workshop's answer:** For a family banquette the shop sends its premium charts of water-resistant fabrics that wipe clean easily. One family ordered three 2 in (5 cm) thick cushions with piping: 50 x 18½ in (127 x 47 cm), 59 x 18½ in (150 x 47 cm) and 21 x 11½ in (53 x 29 cm).

**A common question:** Do you make custom sizes? My seat is 205½ in long.

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. A seat 205½ in (522 cm) long is made as two cushions of about 102¾ in (261 cm) each, added to the cart as two pieces through the listing. Button tufting is offered too, though it adds noticeably to the cost on a run that long.

**A common question:** Can you quote a bay window seat cushion from a photo I've marked with measurements?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, and you can order straight from it. Pick the size range that covers the overall size, for example 85 x 23¾ in (216 x 60.5 cm), then in the personalization box give the fabric code and thickness and upload the photo. Thicknesses of 2, 3, 4 and 5 in cost the same.

> **Tailor's margin:** Read every size on a custom listing before paying; one short backrest showed 23½ in (60 cm) when 27½ in (70 cm) was ordered.

## Questions buyers ask next

### What pillows go with a black window seat cushion?

Pick one patterned pillow in black and white and one plain pillow in a warm material. Houndstooth and cognac faux leather work together because the pattern and the warmth come from different pillows and never compete.

### How do I keep a monochrome reading nook from feeling cold?

Add one warm tone and repeat it once. Here cognac leather on the seat and dried wheat on the sill share a color, so the warmth reads as planned rather than accidental, and the black and white stay crisp.

### Why drape a throw over the end of a window seat?

A throw breaks a long, hard edge. On this seat a gray knit throw interrupts the black line where the cushion meets the frame, and it is right there when the afternoon cools off.
