# A black and white zigzag bench cushion, measured against its box

*A letter for anyone about to type a thickness into an order form. The photograph has the numbers in it, if you read it with a ruler.*

> **The quick answer:** For a bench cushion on a storage box, 4 in (10 cm) is the thickness most buyers settle on, and it raises the seat by exactly that much. Measure the box height, add the cushion, and compare the total with a seat you already find comfortable. Pillows set in front take their own thickness out of the seat depth.

All three pillow colors come from the striped rug below.")

## A letter about a quarter of a box

Partner,

You asked me how thick to make your cushion. Before you answer with a number you like the sound of, look at this photograph with me. It has a ruler hidden in it.

The bench is a white storage box in a living room corner, under a rice-paper lantern. On top sits a black and white zigzag [bench cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bench-cushions/) with a box edge and self piping, and its thickness is about a quarter of the box below it. That ratio is why it reads substantial without looking like a mattress. It lands close to 4 in (10 cm), the number most buyers end up choosing.

The zigzag has a second job. Black and white works as a neutral, so the three pillows carry all the color, and every pillow color comes out of the patchwork striped rug on the floor. Red velvet goes at the wall end, the tallest, to anchor the row. A mustard ruffle sits in the middle. A cobalt boucle lumbar goes in front to break up the squares. The olive corduroy sofa beside the bench keeps the primaries from going nursery-bright, and the rubber plant, the two black-framed prints and the oak cube shelf repeat the black, white and wood already in the room.

Note what that lumbar costs you, though. It sits in front of the others, and anything in front eats seat depth. So, before any fabric talk: how tall is your box, lid closed?

## Pinned by Nate: five measurements in one corner

Five pins, from the zigzag cushion to the rug that chose every pillow color.

1. **Monochrome zigzag cushion**: Black and white acts as a neutral, so the pillows can carry all the color.
2. **Red velvet pillow**: The tallest pillow goes at the wall end to anchor the row.
3. **Cobalt bouclé lumbar**: A lumbar in front breaks the row of squares and shows off the bouclé texture.
4. **Striped patchwork rug**: Every pillow color is taken from this rug.
5. **Olive corduroy sofa**: A muted olive keeps the primary colors from tipping into nursery-bright.

## Three measurements, in this order

1. **Box height**: Measure from the floor to the top of the bench, lid closed. Write it down to the nearest 1/4 in (6 mm).
2. **Target seat height**: Measure a seat you already find comfortable, floor to the top of its cushion. Subtract the box height, and what is left is your cushion thickness. Run the numbers in the [seat height calculator](https://cushionguide.com/studio/seat-height-calculator/). If the answer comes out near 4 in (10 cm), you are in good company.
3. **Usable depth**: Measure the bench front to back, then subtract the thickness of every pillow you plan to keep against the wall. On a 15 in (38 cm) deep bench, every inch of pillow is an inch you no longer sit on.

## The 36 in cushion that should have been 44 in

A buyer in the US ordered two bench cushions. One arrived 36 in (91 cm) wide when 44 in (112 cm) had been ordered. That is an 8 in (20 cm) miss, far outside any handmade tolerance, and the workshop said so plainly and remade it: 15 x 44 in (38 x 112 cm), same fabric, same thickness.

The same buyer felt the off-white fabric with cream stripes looked more yellow than in the listing photos. Here the answer was different. The fabric had not changed; listing photos and review photos are taken in different light.

A size error is a measurable claim: photograph the tape on the cushion and send it to the workshop. A lighting difference on a screen is not a fabric fault. Keep those two in separate columns and a claim stays clear; the [remakes and fixes pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/custom-cushion-remake-wrong-size-color/) lays out both. Tolerance is kindness to your future self, but 8 in is not tolerance.

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** My entry bench sits by the door where two big dogs go in and out. Which fabric will hold up?

**The workshop's answer:** For a busy spot with dogs, the workshop recommended outdoor fabric as a rugged choice, and pointed to the outdoor listing to see every outdoor color.

**A common question:** Can a back cushion be thicker at the bottom, or shaped to sit on an angled bench?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Wedge-style backs that are thicker at the bottom have been made, for example in a patio set of two 33 x 30 x 4 in seats with two 32 x 13 in backs. For an angled dining bench, the bottom edge of the back cushion can be shaped so it sits better on the seat.

**A common question:** Is this piping gold or yellow? It looks different in every photo.

**The workshop's answer:** The same piping photographs differently with different light and cameras; in two of the workshop's own photos the identical piping looked gold in one and not in the other. No match to a given photo can be promised, because the light in your room decides. This one is closer to gold than yellow. Order swatches if the exact tone matters.

## On the cutting table

| | |
|---|---|
| Cushion | Bench cushion, box edge, one piece |
| Fabric | Black and white zigzag print |
| Piping | Self piping in the same print |
| Thickness | About 4 in (10 cm), roughly a quarter of the box height |
| Seat height | Box height plus cushion thickness |
| Usable depth | Bench depth minus the thickness of pillows kept against the wall |
| Back options | Wedge backs thicker at the bottom; contoured bottom edge for angled benches |
| Best for | Storage boxes and entry benches where pillows change with the seasons |

> A bench cushion that arrives 36 in wide instead of the 44 in ordered is a making error: measure it, photograph the tape and send the photos to the workshop. A fabric that looks more yellow on screen is a lighting difference, not a fault.

> **Tailor's margin:** Pillows kept against the wall take their thickness out of seat depth. Measure the bench front to back, then subtract every pillow you plan to keep.

## Questions buyers ask next

### How thick should a storage bench cushion be?

Most buyers settle on 4 in (10 cm). On a tall box it reads substantial without looking like a mattress. Add it to the box height and check the total seat height before you commit.

### Why choose a black and white print for a bench cushion?

Monochrome behaves like a neutral. The pillows can carry all the color and change with the seasons while the cushion stays put; here red, mustard and cobalt are pulled straight from the striped rug below.

### Does a lumbar pillow change how deep the seat feels?

Yes. Anything placed in front of the wall takes its own thickness out of the usable depth. On a 15 in (38 cm) bench that adds up quickly, so plan the pillows before you settle the cushion size.
