# A black arch jacquard bench cushion, and how the cloth feels, wears and cleans

*Maggie writes to a sunny window bench where a seat and a leaning backrest in the same jacquard make a small sofa, and explains what the cloth is like under your hand.*

> **The quick answer:** A custom bench cushion in jacquard suits a daily window seat because the pattern is woven in and the firm, dry hand keeps a box edge and its piping straight. Pair the seat with a long backrest in the same fabric, pattern at full scale, and lean it on the window reveal; warm a black-and-cream weave with terracotta and citrus.

## Run a palm across the arches first

Run a palm across this seat before you look at it. That is my advice for any [jacquard](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#jacquard), and the black arch pattern on this walnut bench is a good one to practice on.

A jacquard has its pattern woven in rather than printed on top, so the arches carry a slight ridge you can feel with a fingertip. The hand is dry and firm, not plush. On a [bench seat cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bench-cushions/) that holds coffee, a book and an elbow most afternoons, firm is a virtue: the box edge keeps its shape and the cream piping stays on a straight line along the front. A straight welt is a kind of honesty, and a firm cloth makes honesty easier.

The proportion is simple. A box-edge seat runs the length of the bench, and a long rectangular backrest in the same cloth leans against the window reveal with no fixings at all. The arches repeat at full scale on both, so the pair reads as one piece and the bench becomes a small sofa.

None of the props is idle. Black and cream can feel cool in strong sun, so a terracotta bowl of oranges sits beside the backrest to warm it. The opal globe lamp is round on purpose, to soften all those arches. The fan palm's terracotta pot repeats the rooftops outside, the marble pedestal table keeps the stoneware mug off the fabric, and the cream linen throw gives the hand something soft beside the firm weave. Does your bench have a wall or a window right behind it, dear?

## Pinned by Maggie at the sunny window

Five pins: the leaning backrest, the full-scale arches, the bowl of oranges, the globe lamp and the fan palm at floor level.

1. **Matching backrest cushion**: A long cushion in the same fabric leans on the window reveal and turns the bench into a sofa.
2. **Arch-pattern seat**: The arches repeat at full scale on seat and back, so both read as one piece.
3. **Bowl of oranges**: Bright citrus warms a black-and-cream weave that could feel cool in strong sun.
4. **Globe lamp**: A round opal shade softens the graphic arches beside it.
5. **Fan palm**: A terracotta pot repeats the rooftops outside at floor level.

## The hand test for a jacquard bench cushion

- ✓ Drag a fingertip across the pattern. A woven jacquard has a slight ridge where one color meets the next.
- ✓ Pinch the swatch and let go. A tight, firm weave holds its shape, and that is what keeps a box edge and its piping crisp.
- ✓ Look at it in afternoon sun and again under a lamp, because black and cream swing between warm and cool.
- ✓ Check that the pattern repeat fits both seat and backrest at full scale, so the two read as one piece.
- ✓ Ask for the fabric's [cleaning code](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#cleaning-codes) before you choose, and give mugs a side table rather than the seat.
- ✓ Order a [fabric swatch](https://cushionguide.com/guides/fabric-swatches-before-ordering/) first; a photograph shows the pattern but never the hand.

## Twelve cushions on one sketch, and an honest go-local

One buyer wrote in with a sketch for a built-in lounge: twelve cushions, six seats and six backs, every one 4 in (10 cm) thick. The pieces came in four sizes, and the workshop checked each width against the drawing before quoting the whole set.

Their budget was about half the quote, and a maker close to them had offered less. So the workshop told them to go ahead locally. That is what an honest answer looks like, and I have given it myself more than once, usually after trying too hard to make the numbers bend.

What I admire is the sketch. Every piece was written as length x depth x thickness in one list, which made the quote easy to hold against the other one, line by line. Put your own multi-piece project in a table like that and any two quotes become comparable. The [custom quote guide](https://cushionguide.com/guides/custom-cushion-quote-what-to-send/) shows the format.

## Buyer questions: odd shapes, stripes and connected backs

**A common question:** My bay window seat is an odd shape. Can I send a photo with the measurements for a quote?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Send the shape with every measurement marked on it, and the workshop quotes from that. For one unusual bay window cushion, the quote came as a single total that covered taxes and delivery to the door.

**A common question:** Could you make one of your plain colors in the broad-stripe pattern?

**The workshop's answer:** No. Plains and stripes sit on different fabric charts, and because the fabrics come directly from the mills, the workshop can't create a new pattern or colorway. You choose from the striped options that already exist.

**A common question:** Can a bench seat and its two side backrests be made as one connected piece?

**The workshop's answer:** The workshop quoted it as separate sections instead: two pieces of 15 3/4 x 19 3/4 in (40 x 50 cm) and one of 15 3/4 x 63 in (40 x 160 cm). It asked the buyer to confirm each size before giving a total.

## On the cutting table: the walnut window bench

| | |
|---|---|
| Cushions | Box-edge seat plus a long rectangular backrest |
| Fabric | Black and cream arch-pattern jacquard |
| Piping | Contrast piping in cream |
| Pattern | Arches at full scale on seat and back |
| Backrest fixing | None; it leans on the window reveal |
| Hand | Dry, firm, slightly ridged weave |
| Warm-up props | Oranges, terracotta pots, a cream linen throw |
| Best for | A bench under a window or against a wall that should seat like a sofa |

> **Tailor's margin:** Black-and-cream jacquard reads cool in strong sun; set a bowl of oranges or a terracotta pot within arm's reach of the bench cushion.

## Questions buyers ask next

### What does a jacquard bench cushion feel like to sit on?

A jacquard has its pattern woven into the cloth, so the surface has a slight ridge where the pattern changes. The hand is firm and dry rather than plush, which helps a box-edge seat keep its shape and its piping straight.

### Does a bench backrest cushion need ties or a rail?

Not always. On this walnut bench the long backrest simply leans on the window reveal. That works when a wall or deep reveal sits right behind the seat; a freestanding bench with nothing behind it needs another plan.

### Should a bench backrest match the seat fabric?

Matching them, with the pattern at the same scale on both, makes the bench read as one piece of furniture, like a small sofa. A different fabric on the backrest makes it read as a pillow resting on a bench instead.

### How do I keep a cream and black jacquard cushion looking clean?

Keep mugs and plates on a side table rather than the seat, deal with spills straight away, and check the fabric's cleaning code before washing anything. A graphic pattern also hides small marks better than a plain cream would.
