# A charcoal corduroy window seat cushion, and the props that sit beside it

*Seven pretty things in this bedroom, and not one of them is on the window seat. Pull up a chair, neighbor: three common questions first, then the reason.*

> **The quick answer:** A charcoal corduroy window seat cushion suits a blush pink room because the dark, ribbed block gives soft walls an edge and makes white window trim look brighter. Keep the seat itself bare and put the styling on a side table: one lit candle, one fern, a few books. A box edge finished in the same corduroy keeps the cushion calm.

## Three questions about built-in seats

**A common question:** We just had a window seat built and I'm not sure how to measure it. Is length side to side and width front to back?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes: length is side to side, and width is front to back, the seat depth. Measure the front edge wall to wall in a straight line, then the back edge along the window, which is often shorter. Take the depth on both the left and the right if it varies, and each side edge separately if the side walls are angled. Use a rigid tape on the seat itself, draw a top-view sketch with every number on its edge, and send it with a photo. The workshop checks the numbers and confirms the shape.

**A common question:** Have you ever made seat and back cushions for a built-in breakfast nook? Mine is an L.

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Send the size of each seat run and each back section. An L-shaped seat is made as two pieces that meet at the corner. Back pillows are separate rectangles, for example 18 in (46 cm) tall and 3 in (8 cm) deep, and they can be in a complementary fabric.

**A common question:** I ordered my trapezoid window seat cushion through the regular rectangle listing. Is that a problem?

**The workshop's answer:** Trapezoids take extra cutting and sewing, so they have their own pricing and are made on a separate production line. When one comes in through the rectangular listing, the workshop either cancels and refunds in full so you can reorder the right way, or sends a link to pay the difference.

## A dark seat in a soft room

Blush walls usually talk people into pale fabric. Somebody here said no, and I would like to shake their hand. The cushion is anthracite corduroy, a charcoal with a little navy in it, and against pink it looks like the one grown-up at a birthday party.

Now look at the white sash window. It reads brighter than it would over a cream cushion, because dark beside light makes the light look lighter. That trick costs nothing.

The [window seat cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/window-seat-cushions/) runs the full width of the recess, wall to wall, with a box edge finished in its own cloth. On [corduroy](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/corduroy/) that is the kind choice: the wale already gives you texture, and a contrast cord would only argue with it. The block is thick and square, nearly as tall as the painted base under it. It says sit here, not look at me.

## Pinned on the photograph

Five spots where the styling is doing quiet work.

1. **Charcoal on blush**: A dark cushion gives a pastel room an edge and makes the white window look brighter.
2. **Botanical print**: Fine green line art ties the fern and the garden together.
3. **Fern**: Greenery on the side table balances the long dark block of the seat.
4. **Lit candle**: A small warm glow keeps the charcoal from feeling stark.
5. **Jute rug**: Natural texture underfoot softens the transition from seat to floor.

## Why every pretty thing lives on the side table

Count the props: a round two-tier oak side table, a candle burning in a glass, a fern in a white pot, a bud vase of dried seed heads, a stack of books, a botanical print, a jute rug. Seven things, and none of them is on the seat.

That is on purpose. A window seat is furniture people climb onto in socks with a mug. Pile pillows on it and somebody spends the evening moving them. Put the styling on a table at the end, and the whole cushion stays free to sit on.

Each prop has a job. The candle puts a warm glow next to the darkest thing in the [bedroom](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bedroom-cushions/), so charcoal feels cozy instead of stark. The fern is the only living green, and it balances the long dark block. The print's fine green lines carry that fern up the wall and out toward the garden. The jute rug gives bare feet something rough and natural between seat and floorboards. The books are simply honest: somebody reads here.

To copy it, choose one warm light, one green plant and one natural texture underfoot, and park them beside the seat, not on it. Which corner of your house has a little table that could take on that job?

## The 12-inch seat that wanted a 14-inch cushion

A buyer in the US had a wooden box window seat, 12 x 63 in (30 x 160 cm), and wanted the cushion 14 in (36 cm) deep for comfort. A fair wish: 12 in is a perch, not a seat. The worry was the front edge. With 2 in hanging past the wood, would it sag and break down?

The workshop's answer was plain. Up to 2 in of overhang is fine with high-density foam. For extra insurance, the foam could be made a touch firmer and given a supporting inner wrap to keep the front edge square. In the end the quote came in over the buyer's budget, and that happens on the best porches. The lesson outlived the order.

> **Tailor's margin:** A 12 in deep window seat can take a 14 in cushion. Up to 2 in of overhang keeps its edge when the foam is firm and wrapped.

## On the cutting table

| | |
|---|---|
| Cushion | Window seat cushion, wall to wall in the recess |
| Fabric | Corduroy, anthracite: a charcoal with a navy cast |
| Edge | Box edge, square corners, finished in the same corduroy |
| Ribs | Along the top; around the side band so it needs no joins |
| Overhang | Up to 2 in (5 cm) past the front with firm, wrapped foam |
| Fastening | Hidden zipper; the cover comes off |
| Care | 86°F (30°C) gentle or delicate cycle, mild detergent, air dry |
| Styling | On a side table, not on the seat |
| Best for | Built-in window seats and bedroom reading spots |

## Questions buyers ask next

### Which way do the ribs run on a corduroy box cushion?

Along the top, and horizontally around the side band, because the band is cut along the fabric roll. That keeps the band free of joins. Vertical ribs on the band can be a special request, but the band may then need seams.

### Is there a true black corduroy for a window seat?

No. The corduroy range has no true black, and very dark codes can pass for black on a screen. Ask for a photo of the actual fabric, or order samples, before you settle on the darkest shade.

### Will a corduroy cushion look flattened when it arrives?

It can. Cushions travel vacuum-packed, and the pressure can make the pile lie in different directions. Lay it flat and uncovered for a few days, up to about 10, and brush by hand in the direction of the pile.

### How do I tell the workshop which corduroy color I want?

Write the fabric code in the personalization or order note box. If you forget, message right after ordering; buyers whose orders are missing a code are contacted before production starts, so nothing is cut on a guess.
