# Banquette cushions for Mid-Atlantic rowhouses, porches and kitchens

*Long, narrow rowhouse kitchens push the table against a wall, and a wall with a table wants a bench. Size that bench cushion to the table, the sill and the family that eats there.*

> **The quick answer:** Mid-Atlantic banquette cushions should be firm, 2.5 to 4 in (6.5 to 10 cm) thick, and sized so the seat meets the table at a comfortable height. Measure each run of an L or U nook separately, note any sill that overhangs the seat, and choose a tight, washable weave for family meals. Porch and shore cushions need outdoor fabric and winter storage.

## Sticky Julys, honest winters, yellow Aprils

The Mid-Atlantic does summer the humid way. Washington, DC sees about 36 days a year at 90°F (32°C) or above, Baltimore about 32, and morning humidity sits in the mid-70s percent across the region. Then winter shows up properly: Baltimore averages about 93 days at or below freezing, Philadelphia about 88.

Spring adds a coat of pollen to every porch rail. The Jersey Shore, the Delaware beaches and the Chesapeake add salt and wind.

So a cushion here leads two lives. Indoors, the banquette works three meals a day and needs a [performance weave](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/performance-and-pet-friendly/) that forgives. Outdoors, porch cushions take pollen in April, sticky heat in July and a trip to the basement before the first freeze.

## Rowhouses, twins and the nook at the back of the kitchen

Row houses make up about 70% of Philadelphia's housing, and Baltimore is a rowhouse city too. The rooms run long and narrow, so the table goes against a wall and the wall gets a bench. Put a window at the end and you have an [L or U nook](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/kitchen-nook-cushions/) with a sill over the seat. Out in the suburbs, Foursquares and Colonial Revivals add front-porch benches and [mudroom niches](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/mudroom-and-entryway-bench-cushions/). Around here it's a deck or a porch, dear, not a patio.

My confession: I once sized a [banquette](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/banquette-cushions/) seat to the bench and forgot the back cushion, which eats seat depth. A buyer in the US hit the same trap on a U dinette: the main seat first came out 15.5 in deep, too shallow, so the back became 4 in thick and the seat 17.5 in.

Height matters as much. Seat height is the bench plus the cushion; the [seat height calculator](https://cushionguide.com/studio/seat-height-calculator/) and the [table-height guide](https://cushionguide.com/guides/banquette-cushion-thickness-table-height/) do the arithmetic. How high is your table?

## Fabric and foam for a hardworking nook

| Seat | Fabric | Thickness | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kitchen banquette, kids at the table | Tight performance weave or a wipe-clean water-resistant chart | 3 in (7.5 cm) | Firm high-density foam barely compresses, so 3 in supports without lifting you off the table |
| Bench already at seat height | Any washable indoor fabric | 2 to 2.5 in (5 to 6.5 cm) | Keeps knees under the tabletop |
| Classic ticking nook | Navy ticking stripe, 100% cotton | 2.5 to 3 in (6.5 to 7.5 cm) | Washes at 86°F (30°C) but stains more easily |
| L or U back pillows | Same or a complementary fabric | 16 to 18 in (40 to 46 cm) tall, 3 to 4 in deep | Shredded-foam backs sit softer than seats |
| Mudroom niche | Corduroy or linen | Work back from an 18 in (46 cm) seat | Bench height plus cushion equals seat height |
| Front porch or shore deck | Outdoor fabric, UV-resistant and water-repellent | 3 to 4 in (7.5 to 10 cm) | Stored indoors over winter |

Corduroy looks right in a rowhouse kitchen, but its ribs can split under hard daily use. For the busiest seat in the house, a tight performance weave outlasts it.

## A U nook with a sill over two seats

A family in the US needed three cushions for a U-shaped breakfast nook, two with cutouts where the window sill overhung the seat, and they feared food stains.

They loved the [navy ticking stripe](https://cushionguide.com/concepts/navy-ticking-stripe-cushions/). The workshop told them plainly: it is 100% cotton and stains more easily, though everything washes at 86°F (30°C). Firm high-density foam made 2.5 in comfortable, so the seats stayed low for the table. It warned, too, that solid navy piping might not match the stripe exactly. A straight welt is a kind of honesty; so is saying that out loud.

Then the drawing check caught a 2 1/4 in mismatch in the third piece. On a stepped cutout, the edges on each side must add up to the same total. The family re-measured before a single cut.

## The Mid-Atlantic cushion calendar

- ✓ April: shake pollen off porch cushions; wash indoor covers at 86°F (30°C) or lower.
- ✓ July and August: stand damp porch cushions on edge to dry; flat ones stay wet in sticky air.
- ✓ Shore houses: rinse salt off outdoor covers with fresh water.
- ✓ November: porch cushions go to the basement, fully dry, before the first freeze.
- ✓ Daily: wipe banquette spills the same day.
- ✓ Twice a year: swap banquette seats end for end so the favorite spot doesn't wear alone.

> A banquette cushion's seat height is the bench height plus the cushion: a 15 in bench with a 3 in cushion sits at 18 in.

> **Tailor's margin:** On a banquette with back cushions, seat depth is the bench depth minus the back cushion's thickness. Check it before you order.

## Kitchen-nook questions

**A common question:** How thick should a breakfast nook cushion be for everyday meals?

**The workshop's answer:** 3 or 4 in (7.5 to 10 cm) for a bench used every day. The firm high-density foam barely compresses, so if the bench is already at seat height, 2 to 3 in keeps the table comfortable. 2 in is the minimum.

**A common question:** My mudroom niche is 15 in high. What cushion gets the seat to 18 in?

**The workshop's answer:** A 3 in cushion, since seat height is bench height plus cushion thickness. For a 17 x 35.75 in niche, pick the nearest menu size, 17 x 36 x 3 in, and write the exact size in the note.

**A common question:** How do I size back pillows for an L-shaped banquette?

**The workshop's answer:** Short-wall back line = its seat length plus the long side's seat depth, minus the corner pillow. Split each wall into two or three pillows about 16 in (40 cm) tall, leaving about 1.5 in of allowance.

**A common question:** Is there a wipe-clean fabric for a banquette where a toddler eats?

**The workshop's answer:** The standard fabric isn't waterproof, but its zippered covers wash at 86°F (30°C) or lower. For real spill protection, ask for the water-repellent option, the wipe-clean water-resistant charts or faux leather.

**A common question:** How should I send measurements for an angled banquette?

**The workshop's answer:** Photograph the space and sketch it with every side measured and labeled A, B, C, plus the wall height above the seat for back cushions. The workshop sends its own drawing back and waits for your approval.

## More from rowhouse kitchens

### Is one long cushion better than two on a busy kitchen bench?

Often, yes: one piece stays aligned because nothing shifts between halves. A buyer in the US with a 90 x 24 in kitchen bench chose a single linen cushion, and the workshop confirmed it holds its shape.

### Can banquette back pillows be a different fabric from the seats?

Yes. One US family paired green corduroy seats with five back pillows, 18 in tall and 3 in deep, in a closely matching green soft fabric filled with softer shredded foam. Match colors across fabric types by eye, not by color name.

### How precisely should a three-sided breakfast nook be measured?

Run by run, to the eighth of an inch. One three-sided nook took seat cushions at 65 1/8, 56 1/4 and 91 in, all 17 in deep, each measured and priced on its own.

### How is an L-shaped kitchen bench usually split into cushions?

As separate cushions meeting at the corner: often one arm, a square corner piece and the other arm, each trimmed about 1/4 in so no edge overhangs.
