# Custom cushions for Romanian apartments, mountain houses and village homes

*The old Romanian village house was built around its stove, with a long bench against the wall. I'd build a cushion for that room the way the weavers built their wall carpets: for hard use, and for keeps.*

> **The quick answer:** Custom cushions in Romania mostly go on three seats: the long wooden wall bench of a village house, the balcony of a Bucharest apartment block, and the bench in a Carpathian cabin. Measure in centimeters, choose velvet, corduroy or a woven jacquard indoors and outdoor fabric on an open balcony, and keep every cushion outside the wood stove's clearance.

## Thirty degrees in July, frost in the foothills

Romania asks a cushion to live at both ends of the thermometer. At Bucharest's Băneasa station the 1991–2020 normals give July days of 86.7°F (30.4°C), January nights of 23.0°F (−5.0°C), and about 2,126 hours of sun a year, 293 of them in July.

Climb and the numbers turn over. The National Meteorological Administration puts the January average at 25 to 32°F (−4 to 0°C) on the plains, 21 to 25°F (−6 to −4°C) in the Carpathian foothills and below 14°F (−10°C) above 5,900 ft (1,800 m). The national record, 111.7°F (44.3°C), came at Calafat in July 2007.

Fifty-some years of watching weather work on cloth tell me this:
- **Summer sun fades.** A south-facing balcony in July takes more color out of an indoor fabric than a whole winter will.
- **Cold doesn't hurt foam; damp does.** Water that gets in, freezes, thaws and never dries is what ruins a cushion.
- **Stove heat is dry heat.** Keep cushions back from stoves and radiators, and brush them often.

## The fire room, the porch and the bench along the wall

The old Romanian village house was built around its stove. The room where the family lived was often called the *cameră a focului*, the fire room, because the stove stood there; a passage room, the *tindă*, a clean room for guests and a porch, the *prispă*, made up the rest. Oak and fir were the main timbers.

Along the walls of the fire room ran the *laviță*, the long wooden bench, and over it went the weaving. Romania's wall carpets served as decoration and insulation and went into a bride's dowry; UNESCO listed the craft in 2016. A cushion for that bench should be built the way those carpets were: plain, strong and meant for every day. A seam is a promise.

In town the seat moves. Most of Bucharest lives in apartment blocks, the *blocuri*, and the balcony changes with the season. Glazed in, it's a sunroom, and indoor fabric will do if you turn it against the July sun. Open, it's outdoors, and it wants [outdoor fabric](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/outdoor-acrylic/) and a dry winter indoors. Next door, the [Hungary](https://cushionguide.com/places/custom-cushions-hungary/) and [Bulgaria](https://cushionguide.com/places/custom-cushions-bulgaria/) pages cover their own flats and balconies.

Up in the Carpathians the cabin bench is never far from the stove, and there I get strict. The workshop's standard foam has no added flame retardants and its standard fabrics have no fire-retardant treatment. Find the clearance to combustibles on the stove's plate or in its manual, and keep cushions and throws outside it.

## Village bench, block balcony, cabin: what I'd cut

| Seat | Fabric | Thickness | Build |
|---|---|---|---|
| Long wall bench (laviță) in a village house | Velvet or a woven jacquard; cotton ticking in a kitchen | 2 to 4 in (5 to 10 cm) | Non-slip base; pieces of about 79 in (2 m) or less are easier to lift and wash |
| Glazed block balcony bench | Linen-look or velvet, turned against the sun | 4 in (10 cm) | Non-slip base; zip-off cover |
| Open block balcony chairs | Outdoor fabric, water-repellent and UV-resistant | 2 in (5 cm) | Two ties at the back corners; indoors for winter |
| Mountain cabin bench | Velvet or corduroy indoors; outdoor fabric on the terrace | 4 in (10 cm) | Kept outside the stove's clearance; zip-off cover |
| Floor cushion on a woven rug | Velvet, corduroy or jacquard | 4 in (10 cm) tufted; 3, 5, 6 or 8 in (8, 13, 15 or 20 cm) on request | Tufted pieces don't unzip; wipe them clean in place |

Seat foam is about 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³). Give every size in centimeters, and send the fabric code with the order: the cover isn't sewn until the code arrives.

## Three hundred thirty-seven centimeters of velvet

A buyer wrote to the workshop about one long bench: about 11 ft (337 cm) by 22 in (56 cm), and just 2 in (5 cm) thick, with a velvet body, a contrasting piping and a non-slip base.

The workshop walked them through it: pick the size range on the listing, then write the exact size, the fabric code, the piping code and the non-slip base in the personalization box. The length didn't make it impossible. It made it a custom order, and a custom order is only as good as what's written down.

I'd hold that order up to anyone with a Romanian wall bench. Two inches keeps a bench looking like a bench, with the wood and the weaving still in view. The non-slip base earns its keep on a long run, because a long cushion creeps every time somebody sits down at one end.

If you'd rather carry it than wrestle it, split it. On long runs the workshop usually suggests two equal pieces; the [long bench Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/long-bench-cushion-one-piece-or-two/) weighs it up, and the [bench cushion builder](https://cushionguide.com/studio/bench-cushion-builder/) draws yours.

## Sitting low on a woven rug

Floor cushions suit a Romanian room better than folks expect, because the rug is already down. A tufted [floor cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/floor-cushions/) comes 4 in (10 cm) thick as standard, and 3, 5, 6 or 8 in (8, 13, 15 or 20 cm) on request; thicker sits higher and costs more.

Put it where the family actually sits: by the window, under the lamp, at the low table. Not by the stove. I'd rather you moved it across the room tonight, my friend, than wrote to me about it in February.

Tufted cushions are sewn right through, so they don't unzip; wipe them with a damp cloth and mild soap. For a cover that comes off, ask for a plain cushion instead, and see the [floor cushion thickness Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/floor-cushion-thickness-guide/) for heights.

## Red, white and the colors of a wall carpet

Romanian textiles have a strong hand. The embroidered blouse, the *ie*, with its band of shoulder stitching called the *altiță*, joined UNESCO's list in 2022; it's sewn on white flax, cotton or hemp, in palettes from quiet to bright.

A cushion shouldn't try to copy that. It should let it lead. If a woven carpet hangs over the bench, take one quiet color out of it, a madder red, a walnut brown, the cream of the ground, and make the cushion plain in that, with piping a shade darker. If the room is plain, let the cushion carry the pattern: a woven [jacquard](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/jacquard-and-damask/), or red-and-white [ticking](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/striped-cotton-and-ticking/) like the bench in our photo. Check it in daylight beside the carpet. What's hanging on the wall above your bench?

## A Romanian cushion year, plains to peaks

- ✓ March: air the cabin cushions on the first dry weekend and check the foam for damp before anyone sits down.
- ✓ May: balcony cushions go back out; tie the chair pads at the back corners.
- ✓ July: turn cushions on south-facing balconies and glazed loggias every week or two. Bucharest averages about 293 hours of sun this month alone.
- ✓ October: wash zippered covers at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle, no bleach, and air dry them. No tumble dryer.
- ✓ November: open-balcony cushions come in, dried right through and stored on edge where air moves, never in a sealed bag.
- ✓ Winter at the cabin: move cushions outside the stove's clearance before you light it, and take the good ones home when you close up.

> **Tailor's margin:** Find the clearance on your stove's plate before you measure the cabin bench. Mark it on the floor with tape. Cushions live outside the tape.

## Buyer questions: long benches, floor seating and fabric codes

**A common question:** Can I get strong hook-and-loop strips to hold the cushion on my bench?

**The workshop's answer:** For a bench the workshop suggests ties, or a base made from non-slip fabric so the cushion won't slide, and it asks for a photo of the bench first.

**A common question:** Our floor sofa slides when we lie on it. How do we stop it?

**The workshop's answer:** Lay a rug or a piece of fabric underneath. The pieces already have a non-slip bottom panel, but on a smooth floor they can still move.

**A common question:** Can you make a plain 59 x 59 in (150 x 150 cm) floor mattress with a simple finish?

**The workshop's answer:** The workshop suggested making it as two 29 1/2 x 59 in (75 x 150 cm) pieces instead of one. Two halves are easier to make, ship and handle.

**A common question:** I haven't chosen my fabric yet. Why hasn't my order started?

**The workshop's answer:** Production waits for the fabric code. The foam can be cut and ready, but the cover isn't sewn until the code arrives, so choose the fabric when you order to avoid a delay.

**A common question:** Is the pouf sofa really 43 x 43 in (109 x 109 cm), and is the 13.5 in (34 cm) height the seat height?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes: 43 x 43 in (109 x 109 cm), and 13.5 in (34 cm) is the height from the floor to the seat. When it looks small at first, that is the vacuum packing; it takes a few days to expand fully.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Can a cushion sit next to the wood stove in a Romanian mountain cabin?

Only outside the stove's clearance to combustibles, which is printed on the stove's plate or in its manual. The workshop's standard foam has no added flame retardants and its standard fabrics have no fire-retardant treatment, so keep cushions, floor cushions and throws beyond that line.

### What goes on a glazed block balcony compared with an open one?

A glazed balcony behaves like a sunroom, so linen-look, velvet or a performance weave will do, turned now and then against the summer sun. An open balcony is outdoors: choose water-repellent, UV-resistant outdoor fabric, add ties at the back corners, and bring the cushions in for winter.

### How thick should a cushion be for a long village wall bench?

Four inches (10 cm) is the workshop's standard for everyday sitting, 3 in (7.5 cm) gives a neater, lower line, and 2 in (5 cm) keeps the bench looking like a bench. Split very long runs into pieces you can lift and wash, and add a non-slip base.

### Will a woven-look fabric match a handwoven Romanian carpet exactly?

No, and it shouldn't try. Take one quiet color from the carpet, order swatches of two or three candidates and judge them beside the carpet in daylight. Photos of finished cushions are a better guide than a screen, and dye batches can differ slightly.
