# Custom cushions for Montana cabins, lodges and ranch houses

*Missoula sees frost on 179 mornings a year. In a Montana lodge the seat by the stove works harder than anything on the porch, so that's where I start.*

> **The quick answer:** Custom cushions in Montana should be built for a long indoor winter: firm, about 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³) foam, hard-wearing corduroy or a nubby bouclé on window seats, and fireside floor cushions kept at least 3 ft (91 cm) from the woodstove. Ranch porch cushions go in water-repellent outdoor fabric and come inside, dry, from the first frost to spring.

A knit throw hangs ready over the end.")

## 179 frozen mornings and a summer sky full of smoke

Missoula averages 179 days a year when the low reaches 32°F (0°C) or below, and 43.0 in (109 cm) of snow. Kalispell, down the valley from Whitefish, logs 178 freezing days and 54.4 in (138 cm) of snow. Winter is the long season here, and the indoor seats carry it.

Summer turns the air thin and dry. Missoula's July afternoons average 29% humidity and 80% of possible sunshine. Altitude adds UV, roughly 10% for every 3,281 ft (1,000 m) by the WHO's rule, and fresh snow almost doubles what reaches you. Big Sky sits at 6,936 ft (2,114 m). A cushion under a big west window fades faster up there than the same cloth in a valley back East.

Then the smoke. Montana's fire season runs from May through October, with the peak usually starting in mid-July and lasting about 12 weeks. Ash settles into a porch cushion's weave, which is one more reason I want every cover to zip off and wash.

## Log lodges, ranch porches and the condo by the lift

Montana has built in log for a long time. The Cold Springs Ranch House near Forsyth, a 1½-story house of peeled, hewn cottonwood logs, went up in 1908 and sits on the National Register. Around that tradition: ranch houses with long porches, bunkhouses, lodges, and ski-town condos in Whitefish, at 2,999 ft (914 m), and Big Sky.

The NFPA rule is short: keep anything that can burn at least 3 ft (91 cm) from heating equipment. That includes the floor cushion the dog has claimed. Tape a line on the floor 3 ft out from the stove and size the fireside seating to the room outside it. The [Mountain West cabin page](https://cushionguide.com/places/mountain-west-cabin-cushions/) covers the rest of the high country.

## Cloth and foam for each Montana seat

| Seat | Fabric | Foam and thickness | Build notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lodge window seat | Corduroy or velvet; bouclé for a wool-blanket look | 4 in (10 cm); 6 in (15 cm) for a daybed-deep seat | Bolsters at the ends; add a back cushion later in the same code |
| Fireside floor cushion | Corduroy or a tight performance weave | 4 in (10 cm) or thicker | At least 3 ft (91 cm) from the stove; zip-off covers for ash |
| Ranch porch bench or glider | Outdoor fabric: water-repellent, UV-resistant | 3-4 in (7.5-10 cm) | Ties on request; indoors, dry, from first frost to spring |
| Ski-condo boot bench | Performance weave or faux leather | 3 in (7.5 cm) | Non-slip base on a smooth bench top |
| Bunkhouse daybed | Corduroy or soft fabric | 4 in (10 cm) firm foam | Corner ties so two cushions make one bed |

## An orange corduroy seat that grew into a daybed

A couple in a new house in the US wrote about a window seat about 26 in (66 cm) deep and 98 in (249 cm) long. They picked corduroy COR 205, a shade the workshop calls closer to burnt orange than red, and chose 6 in (15 cm) thick over 8 in, with two bolsters 8 in (20 cm) across and 26 in (66 cm) long for the ends.

They liked it enough to come back. The second order was a back cushion 90 in (229 cm) long, 11 in (28 cm) high and 3 in (7.5 cm) deep, cut from the same code so it matched. They wanted the corduroy ribs to run up and down, and the workshop checked that with production before promising it.

That's a lodge seat in three steps: a deep seat, then bolsters, then a back. Buy the cushion once, cry once, and keep the fabric code where you'll find it in five years. The [reading nook bolster guide](https://cushionguide.com/guides/reading-nook-cushion-bolsters/) sizes the ends.

## Grays and greens that change with the pines

Log walls are orange-gold, stone chimneys are cool gray, and the windows fill a room with green light off the trees. A cushion has to live with all three. Anthracite [corduroy](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/corduroy/) holds its own beside a stacked-stone fireplace; camel warms a log wall without matching it; navy stays calm against snow glare.

A buyer in the US with a tiny house in the woods, cedar walls and a yellow carpet asked to see three grays side by side, smoke, anthracite and a middle gray, because the windows turned everything green. That's the right instinct, my friend. Hold [swatches](https://cushionguide.com/guides/fabric-swatches-before-ordering/) in your own room at noon and again at dusk before you choose.

How far is your favorite chair from the stove? Measure it tonight.

## Closing the ranch porch for winter

- ✓ Bring porch cushions in before the first frost. The standard foam is not quick-dry, and water left inside freezes and thaws.
- ✓ Wash covers at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle and air-dry them.
- ✓ Store cushions off concrete in something breathable, never a sealed damp bag.
- ✓ In smoke season, bring cushions in when ash is forecast, and hose ash gently off outdoor furniture instead of brushing it into the air.
- ✓ A new cushion arrives vacuum-packed: open it in a warm room and give it 36 to 48 hours before you judge the shape.

> **Tailor's margin:** Tape the fabric code inside a cupboard door. The bolster you want in five years has to match the seat you buy this winter.

## Buyer questions: lodge and cabin questions

**A common question:** The cushion arrived flat and creased. How long before it's full, and how do I get the lines out of the corduroy?

**The workshop's answer:** Allow at least 36 to 48 hours, and 36 to 72 for corners and L-shaped pieces. Pat the filling to spread it, smooth corduroy by hand along the ribs, or hold a handheld steamer on low a little away from the fabric. A warm, well-ventilated room helps; send a photo if you're still worried after 48 hours.

**A common question:** I need a true black for the lodge bench. Is that fabric really black?

**The workshop's answer:** Several fabrics that look black on screen aren't: one dotted fabric is dark gray, one stripe is a very dark navy, and corduroy code 03 is dark brown. There's no black corduroy in the range, so ask for a photo before you order.

**A common question:** Can I order a matching round bolster for my window seat later on?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Send the diameter, length, quantity and fabric code, and the workshop adds bolsters to your quote or sets up a separate order later. Bolsters also suit slim seats: one 2 in (5 cm) cushion, 70 in (178 cm) long, was paired with an 8 in and a 6 in bolster of the same length.

**A common question:** Is the foam memory foam or something firmer?

**The workshop's answer:** It's 32-density foam, about 2.0 lb/ft³: a firm, high-density foam, not memory foam, and resilient enough that it won't sag or lose its shape over time.

**A common question:** Can two cushions tie together into one bed when the grandkids sleep over?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Ties can go on the edges or corners so a seat and back, or two floor cushions, tie into a bigger sleeping surface. Specify ties for every cushion in the order.

## Montana cushion questions, answered plain

### How far should floor cushions sit from a woodstove?

At least 3 ft (91 cm). NFPA advises keeping anything that can burn at least three feet from heating equipment, and a floor cushion or pet bed counts. Size fireside seating to the space outside that line.

### Why do cushions fade faster in a Montana window?

Altitude and snow. WHO estimates UV rises about 10% per 3,281 ft (1,000 m), and fresh snow almost doubles UV exposure. At Big Sky's 6,936 ft (2,114 m), that's roughly a fifth more UV than at sea level.

### Can ranch porch cushions stay out through a Montana winter?

Not with standard foam. Missoula averages 179 days a year at or below 32°F (0°C) and 43.0 in (109 cm) of snow. Bring cushions in dry before the first frost and store them off concrete in a breathable cover.

### What should I do with porch cushions in wildfire smoke?

Bring them in when ash is forecast; Montana's fire season runs May through October. Hose ash gently off the furniture rather than brushing it into the air, then zip off the covers and wash them at 86°F (30°C).
