# Window seat cushions for Danish nooks, summer houses and apartments

*On December 21 the Copenhagen sun sets at about 3:40 p.m. After that, the nook by the window does the rest of the day's work.*

> **The quick answer:** Window seat cushions in Denmark mostly serve the hyggekrog, the cozy nook by a window, plus apartment balconies and wooden summer houses. Keep the nook low, 2 to 3 in (5 to 7.5 cm), in linen or bouclé with self piping; judge colors in gray daylight, not warm photos; and bring summer-house cushions home clean and dry before November.

## Seven hours of daylight, most of it gray

Copenhagen gets about 7 hours and 6 minutes of daylight on December 21. From December to February it averages about one and a half hours of sunshine a day. July brings more than seven.

The country is maritime. The Danish Meteorological Institute's figures for 2001–2010 give 30.1 in (765 mm) of precipitation a year, falling on 181 days. No point in Denmark is more than 32 mi (52 km) from the coast.

For a cushion, this means damp before sun. Foam should dry right through. Covers should come off. And color is judged in low, cool light, which pulls every beige a little toward gray. The light is close kin to the [Pacific Northwest's](https://cushionguide.com/places/pacific-northwest-cushions/) long gray season.

## A hyggekrog is a seat, not a corner

*Hygge* is the Danish word for an easy, warm kind of comfort. A *krog* is a nook. Together they name the place you go with a blanket. Denmark's official site calls winter the prime time for hygge, with blankets and candles.

In a Copenhagen apartment the nook is often a deep window with a bench below it. In a house it may be a built-in seat under a gable window, or a long bench along a wall.

Keep it low. Height is a feeling. On a built-in bench, 2 to 3 in (5 to 7.5 cm) reads calm, and the eye stays on the window. One bolster at the wall does the work of three loose pillows. The [bolster Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/reading-nook-cushion-bolsters/) gives sizes, and the [reading nook hub](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/reading-nook-cushions/) shows the shapes.

Gray outside.
Wool on the knees.
Linen under you.

## Summer houses: wood, sea air and the November rule

Danish summer houses are usually built of wood. In designated summer-house areas, overnight stays are generally not allowed from 1 November to the end of February, with some exceptions. So most summer-house cushions spend four months in a closed house near the sea.

Salt and damp do not ruin a cushion in a week. They work on it over a winter. Bring the good cushions home, or store them clean and fully dry, off the floor, in breathable bags.

On the terrace, use [outdoor acrylic](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/outdoor-acrylic/): UV-resistant and water-repellent. Indoor [linen](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/linen-and-cotton-linen/) stays under the roof. The Pattern on [winter storage](https://cushionguide.com/guides/outdoor-cushion-care-winter-storage/) has the full routine. Lake cottages in [Finland](https://cushionguide.com/places/custom-cushions-finland/) close for winter the same way.

## Nook, balcony, summer house: what to choose

| Seat | Fabric | Thickness | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hyggekrog window nook | Linen or bouclé in a soft neutral | 2 to 3 in (5 to 7.5 cm) | Self piping; one bolster at the wall |
| Deep apartment window | Linen-look or corduroy | 2 in (5 cm) | Non-slip base; check that the window clears the cushion |
| Long wall bench | Linen-look | 2 to 3 in (5 to 7.5 cm) | Two equal pieces are easier to carry and wash than one |
| Apartment balcony chairs | Outdoor acrylic | 2 in (5 cm) | Ties at the back corners; indoors in storms |
| Summer-house terrace bench | Outdoor acrylic, UV-resistant and water-repellent | 3 to 4 in (7.5 to 10 cm) | Home or dry storage before 1 November |
| Summer-house daybed | Linen or performance fabric | Cover cut to the mattress | Give length, width and thickness |

Seat foam is 32 kg/m³, about 2.0 lb/ft³, at every thickness. In a calm Danish room, piping in the cushion's own fabric is enough; one contrast line is the most.

## A 103.5 in (263 cm) bench, and then the rest of the room

A buyer in Denmark asked for one bench cushion 103 in (262 cm) long, or two of 51.5 in (131 cm). The workshop suggested two. They wanted one, 15¾ in (40 cm) deep, and it was adjusted to 103.5 in (263 cm) before production.

One long cushion looks calm. It is also harder to carry, turn and wash. Both are honest choices. Know which one you are making.

The buyer was happy and came back for the rest of the room: four seat cushions, six softer back cushions at 21¾ x 25½ in (55 x 65 cm), and an L-shaped chaise cushion. The chaise sketch was in millimeters. The workshop converted it to centimeters, six sides of about 39¼, 19¾, 41¼, 11¾, 17¾ and 27½ in (100, 50, 105, 30, 45 and 70 cm), and confirmed each one before quoting.

A list of sides, read back to you. That is how an odd shape arrives right. The Pattern on [long benches](https://cushionguide.com/guides/long-bench-cushion-one-piece-or-two/) weighs one piece against two.

What does your longest bench measure?

## Five colors that hold up in Danish winter light

- Chalk — #ECEAE4 — Gives back what little December light there is.
- Oat linen — #D5CBB8 — Stays warm when cool light grays it.
- Sea fog — #A7AEAD — Calm beside pale oak, not cold.
- Harbor blue — #4D6072 — For the bolster, not the whole seat.
- Rye — #8B6B4E — Warm under candlelight in the evening.

## Closing the summer house

- ✓ Late October: plan the last weekend. Overnight stays in summer-house areas generally stop on 1 November.
- ✓ Unzip every cover and wash at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle; air dry, no tumble dryer.
- ✓ Dry the foam fully, standing on edge, before it goes anywhere.
- ✓ Store off the floor in breathable bags. Never sealed plastic in a damp house.
- ✓ Take terrace cushions home if the car has room.
- ✓ In the city, bring balcony cushions in for winter. Rain falls on about half the days of the year.
- ✓ Spring: air every cushion for a day before the first guests.

> **Tailor's margin:** Judge the swatch at the window at noon in January, not under a warm lamp. Gray light is the light you will live with.

## Buyer questions: nooks, bolsters and spare covers

**A common question:** The fabric looked cream in the photo, but the chart looks gray. Which is right?

**The workshop's answer:** It comes down to lighting. Styled photos are shot under warm light, which brings out cream and beige; in daylight or cool light the same fabric reads grayer. The chart is closer to the truth, and the workshop sends close-up photos of your chosen fabrics before production, so you can switch codes if needed.

**A common question:** Can you make a cushion with a curved underside for a round nook?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. The foam can be contour-cut. The workshop asks for a photo, makes a mock-up from your dimensions and checks it with you before quoting. One tunnel nook was 37.5 in (95 cm) across with a flat 27¼ x 18 in (69 x 46 cm) seat. Production starts once the fabric is chosen.

**A common question:** For a bench cushion with a back bolster, what depth and bolster size do I need?

**The workshop's answer:** The standard bolster is 8 in (20 cm) across. For 31.5 in (80 cm) of seating depth, plan about 39.5 in (100 cm) of total depth so the bolster has room. Exact sizes are possible too, such as a 31½ x 78¾ in (80 x 200 cm) cushion 8 in (20 cm) thick with an 11¾ in (30 cm) bolster.

**A common question:** Can I use the cotton ticking stripe for terrace cushions that stay out all year?

**The workshop's answer:** No. The ticking stripe is 100% cotton and is not made for outdoors. Use the outdoor linen-look fabrics instead: they are UV-resistant, water-repellent and come in natural tones.

**A common question:** Can I order a spare cover now, or later on?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, at any time, in the same fabric or a different one. Some buyers keep a second set in another color to rotate while the first is being washed.

## Questions buyers ask next

### What thickness suits a hyggekrog window nook?

A low cushion, 2 to 3 in (5 to 7.5 cm), keeps the nook calm and leaves the window as the focus. Go to 4 in (10 cm) only if the nook doubles as a daybed. Add one bolster at the wall rather than a pile of loose pillows.

### Can summer-house cushions stay in the house over winter?

Most summer houses sit closed for months, since overnight stays in designated summer-house areas are generally not allowed from 1 November to the end of February. If cushions stay, wash the covers, dry the foam completely and store them off the floor in breathable bags.

### Why does a cushion color look different in a Danish room than in the photo?

Danish winter light is low and cool; Copenhagen averages about one and a half hours of sunshine a day from December to February. Cool light pulls beige and cream toward gray. Hold a real swatch at the window at midday before choosing.

### Which fabric suits a windy Copenhagen balcony?

Outdoor acrylic, which is UV-resistant and water-repellent, with ties at the back corners so gusts don't lift the cushion. Carry the cushions in during storms and for the winter. Indoor linen belongs behind glass.
