# Cushions for Arizona and the desert Southwest

*Desert light is white, flat and honest, and it tells the truth about every color you set under it. These are my notes for patios, portales and adobe bancos from Phoenix to Santa Fe, so the cushions keep their color and you keep your seat.*

> **The quick answer:** Arizona outdoor cushions need UV-resistant, water-repellent outdoor fabric in lighter desert tones, because sun, not dryness, is what wears them out. Standard seats are 4 in (10 cm) thick. Keep patio cushions in deep shade or indoors through June and the monsoon, June 15 to September 30, since the foam is not quick-dry. Indoors, linen stays crisp in the dry air.

## Eighty-five percent sunshine and a UV Index of 11

In Phoenix the sun behaves like a material, the way wood or stone does, and it works on a cushion every clear day.

Phoenix and Tucson get about 85% of their possible sunshine. Phoenix averages 170 days a year at 90°F (32°C) or above, and in 2024, its warmest year on record, it logged 70 days at 110°F (43°C) or more. The July noon UV Index averages 11.0 there and 11.4 in Albuquerque, higher despite the northern latitude because the city sits at altitude.

The air is bone dry. Phoenix humidity averages 46% in the morning and 23% in the afternoon, and June afternoons fall to about 12%. Then the monsoon arrives, officially June 15 to September 30, with dust storms, lightning, damaging wind and sudden rain. Phoenix gets only 7.22 in (18 cm) of rain a year, and about half of it falls July through September.

The high desert turns it around: Flagstaff averages 90.1 in of snow and 203 freezing days. So dry heat is not gentle on fabric. UV is the damage.

## Portales, ramadas and the plastered banco

Pueblo Revival houses, the Santa Fe style, have adobe or adobe-look walls, flat roofs and thick, battered walls; they were most popular in the 1920s and 1930s. Territorial houses date from 1846 to 1912. Around them stand Spanish Colonial Revival homes, mid-century ranches and desert-modern houses of glass under deep shade structures.

The seats follow the walls. A banco is a solid built-in bench, often plastered, inside near a kiva fireplace or outside along a garden wall. Its cushion is long, custom-shaped and sometimes curved, so it goes on the custom-shape listing with a drawing or a photographed full-size [paper template](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#paper-template). Thick adobe walls make generous window seats; the [bay window cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bay-window-cushions/) hub covers the angled ones. Then come shaded seats under portales and ramadas, pool loungers and floor seating in the casita. Start with [outdoor cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/outdoor-cushions/).

Where does the late light land in your house, my friends: on the banco or on the portal?

## Pool deck, portal, banco: fabric, color and foam for each desert seat

Outside, every seat takes outdoor fabric, and the choices are color and build. Inside, the dry air lets linen and cotton stay crisp.

| Seat | Fabric | Color | Foam and build |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pool lounger in full sun | UV-resistant outdoor fabric | Sand, oatmeal, a soft stripe | 4 in (10 cm) foam, not tufted: tufting lets water in |
| Patio set under a ramada or portal | Outdoor fabric | Sage and white stripe, terracotta | 4 in (10 cm) seats and backs; list every piece and rounded corner in one request |
| Sun-facing window seat in a thick adobe wall | Sun-resistant outdoor fabric | Warm cream, stone | 3 in (7.5 cm) for a neat line; very long trapezoids in two pieces |
| Banco by a kiva fireplace | Linen or velvet | Terracotta, turquoise, sand | 4 in (10 cm); custom shape drawn or traced from a full-size template |
| Casita floor seating | Linen or cotton | Oatmeal, clay | Zippered covers; the dry air keeps natural fibers crisp |

## Caliche, clay and sage: color that stays cool in the sun

On a sun-facing patio at 110°F, a black cushion is a skillet. Lighter desert tones stay cooler under bare legs and hide the slow work of the sun better than dark ones: caliche sand, bleached oatmeal, fired-clay terracotta, the gray-green of sage after rain, and one clear note of turquoise.

Whites need a careful eye. In the outdoor range, M-7 and M-19 have a soft cream ground, S-09 leans stark white, and S-29 and S-30 read more beige. Stripes need one too: the dark stripe of HM-23 reads ink navy, not black, though it looks black from across the pool. The roll is about 55 in (140 cm) wide, so on a long cushion the stripes run front to back, and a long striped piece needs a seam.

Let one color speak and the others listen: a terracotta seat, sand pillows, a single turquoise lumbar. Ask for close-up photos or samples and hold them outside at noon before you decide. [Outdoor fabric](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/outdoor-acrylic/) and [linen](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/linen-and-cotton-linen/) each have a page in the Swatch Library, and the [fabric yardage calculator](https://cushionguide.com/studio/fabric-yardage-calculator/) helps if you want extra fabric for pillows.

## Five seats, five backs and a green stripe for the patio

A buyer in the US wrote to the workshop about a whole patio conversation set: five seats at 22 x 21.5 x 4 in, five backs at 21.5 x 15.5 x 4 in, an ottoman cushion at 22 x 21.5 x 4 in with rounded corners, and two 16 x 16 in pillows. They asked for a Sunbrella forest green stripe.

The workshop doesn't stock Sunbrella. It offered its own outdoor stripes instead, and the set was quoted in a dark green and white outdoor stripe. That cloth is polyester with a water-repellent, UV-resistant finish, and it feels like woven fabric, not a tarp.

What made the quote accurate was the list. Every seat, every back, the ottoman with its rounded corners and both pillows came in one message, so the whole set was priced at once. Nothing was left to a second order.

I love a stripe on a desert patio. A deep bottle green against white looks crisp beside sand-colored stucco and a terracotta pot, and it reads as shade even at noon.

## The desert cushion year runs October to May

- ✓ October: outdoor season opens. Bring cushions back out, wash the zippered covers at 86°F (30°C) on delicate, and dry them in the shade.
- ✓ Winter in the low desert: cushions can stay out under the portal. In Flagstaff and the high desert, store them through the freezes.
- ✓ Spring: move loungers so their cushions sit in shade by early afternoon.
- ✓ May: move cushions into deep shade as the highs climb toward 100°F (38°C).
- ✓ June and July: store cushions indoors or keep them in deep shade through the hottest weeks.
- ✓ June 15 to September 30, the monsoon: bring cushions in before afternoon storms. Dust and sudden rain arrive together, and the foam is not quick-dry.
- ✓ After a dust storm: shake cushions out, brush the dust off dry, then wash the covers.

> **Tailor's margin:** On a sun-facing desert patio, a sand or oatmeal outdoor cushion stays cooler to sit on than a black one, and it shows slow fading less.

## Buyer questions: sun, stripes and outdoor cloth

**A common question:** Does your outdoor fabric feel plastic or rubbery, like cheap waterproof cushions?

**The workshop's answer:** No. The outdoor fabrics aren't the plastic, coated kind; they feel like real fabric, not a tarp. They're less soft than indoor upholstery, closer to a good sun lounger cushion, which is worth knowing if you plan to sit on them indoors every day.

**A common question:** Is your outdoor fabric Sunbrella, or a solution-dyed acrylic?

**The workshop's answer:** Neither. The workshop doesn't use Sunbrella. Its outdoor fabrics are polyester with a water-repellent, UV-resistant finish, so they resist fading and clean easily. Colors include off-white, ivory, oatmeal and a warm light gray. UV rating and weight vary by fabric and are shared once you choose one, and outdoor fabric costs a little more than indoor.

**A common question:** Can you make a very large bay window cushion, about 160 in long and 2 ft deep, in a sun-resistant fabric that isn't velvet or corduroy?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Sun-resistant fabrics are available. At about 160 x 24 in (406 x 61 cm), the workshop suggested making the trapezoid in two pieces, which are easier to make and to handle.

**A common question:** Can I get a tufted cushion for the pool deck if it's made in outdoor fabric?

**The workshop's answer:** It can be made, but a tufted cushion lets water inside even in outdoor fabric. By a pool or a fire pit, the workshop recommends a non-tufted, foam-filled outdoor cushion; zippered outdoor versions are made without tufting.

**A common question:** Is the dark stripe on your striped fabric black, charcoal or navy?

**The workshop's answer:** Mostly navy. Dark stripes such as HM-23 read as dark blue, though they look black from a distance. N09 is the true black stripe, and N29 has thinner stripes, so its pattern looks denser. If the tone must be exact, order a sample first.

## Questions buyers ask next

### When is outdoor cushion season in Phoenix and Tucson?

Think of it the desert way: October to May is outdoor season, and summer is shade-and-storage season. Phoenix averages 170 days a year at 90°F or above, so June and July are the months to keep cushions in deep shade or indoors.

### What should I do with patio cushions when a monsoon storm builds?

Bring them in. The monsoon runs June 15 to September 30 and brings dust, damaging wind and sudden rain together. Outdoor fabric handles showers, but the foam is not quick-dry and there is no mesh bottom, so dry anything soaked within 24 to 48 hours.

### Can an adobe banco get a made-to-measure cushion?

Yes. A banco cushion is a custom shape, often long and sometimes curved, so it is ordered on the custom-shape listing. Upload a drawing with every edge measured, or photograph a full-size paper template with measurements marked where the curves begin, rather than mailing it.

### Is dry desert air hard on indoor linen cushions?

Not really. Dry air lets linen and cotton dry quickly, and mildew is rare. The risk indoors is sun through big glass, so give a sun-facing window seat a sun-resistant outdoor fabric, or a lighter linen such as the warm cream L-02.
