# What buyers value in a custom cushion

*Pull up a chair. People forget the fabric name and the foam grade soon enough. What they remember is whether the cushion fit, whether the color sat right in the room and how any trouble ended.*

> **The quick answer:** A made-to-measure cushion is worth keeping when it gets five things right: a fit within about 1 in (2.5 cm) of the order, color that looks right in the room's own daylight, firm comfort, covers that unzip and wash at 86°F (30°C), and a clear answer when something goes wrong. Each one is decided before the fabric is cut.

## What makes a custom cushion worth keeping?

On my grandmother's porch, the highest praise a cushion ever got was nobody getting up. Forty-some years of re-covering swings, rockers and window seats taught me that people rarely remember the fabric code or the foam grade. They remember whether it fit, whether the color sat right next to the rug, whether it survived the dog, and how a problem ended.

The seven of us see the same things from seven different benches. None of it is luck. Each one comes down to a number measured before cutting, a sample held up to a window, or a question asked out loud while there is still time to change the answer.

So each master has written down the one thing they would protect first. Read them before you order and you'll know what to ask. What would you want your own cushion to get right first, neighbor?

## What a made-to-measure cushion has to get right

- **A fit you can measure**: A cushion that fits is a list of honest numbers: the seat measured wall to wall, never the old cushion, a unit beside every figure, and any hard maximum said out loud. Handmade sizes can move about 1 in (2.5 cm), so a window seat that has to clear a casing gets planned under it. — Nate
- **Color that looks right in the room**: The color people love is the one they chose in their own daylight. Order swatches, hold them beside the rug and the wood at noon and again at dusk, and ask for close-up photos of the two codes you're torn between. A screen flatters; a window tells the truth. — Élodie
- **Firm, with a little give**: Comfort is thickness matched to the seat. About 4 in (10 cm) suits most benches and window seats, and floor seating runs thicker so nobody sinks to the boards. A 28 x 60 in floor couch seats two side by side or lets one person stretch out, as long as the foam is firm enough to hold its shape. — Harlan
- **Covers that come off and wash**: If the dog sleeps there, the cover had better unzip. Zippered covers come off completely and machine wash at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle; air dry them instead of tumbling. Button-tufted cushions are the exception, so spot clean those. — Rosa
- **Answers before anything is cut**: The projects I remember best started with a question asked before the purchase: how high will I actually sit, how will two cushions meet in the corner. Ask the workshop to confirm size, fabric, foam and piping in writing before cutting. A two-line message costs less than a remake. — Hana
- **A problem handled plainly**: Now and then something goes wrong: a size typed wrong, piping colors swapped, a parcel that wanders. How it ends depends on what you send. Photograph the piece with a tape measure in the shot the day the box opens, message the workshop and ask it to confirm in writing what it will do. — Callum

> A custom cushion is remembered for three things: whether it fit, whether the color sat right in the room, and how a problem ended. All three are settled before the fabric is cut.

> **Tailor's margin:** Give a vacuum-packed cushion a full day before you measure it. Foam straight out of the bag measures short and keeps rising for 3 to 5 days.

## Questions buyers ask next

### What matters most in a made-to-measure cushion?

Fit first, then color, comfort, care and how a problem is handled. Fit comes from measuring the seat itself, not the old cushion; color from a swatch seen in daylight; comfort from the right thickness, usually 4 in (10 cm) for a bench or window seat.

### How do I make sure a custom cushion fits?

Measure the seat, not the old cushion, write the unit beside every number and say whether any size is a hard maximum. Handmade cushions can vary about 1 in (2.5 cm), and vacuum-packed foam needs 3 to 5 days to reach full size before you measure it.

### What should I do if a custom cushion arrives the wrong size or color?

Photograph it with a tape measure in the shot the day the box opens, message the workshop and ask it to confirm in writing what it will do. The [remake pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/custom-cushion-remake-wrong-size-color/) explains how past cases were handled.
