# Your cushion arrived vacuum-packed: what happens in the first 72 hours

*A cushion that arrives flat is not the wrong cushion. It is a cushion that has not finished arriving. The timeline, day by day: what to cut, where to lay it, and when to measure.*

> **The quick answer:** A vacuum-packed foam cushion rises in 48 to 72 hours and reaches its ordered size in 3 to 4 days, occasionally up to a week. Cut only the outer plastic, lay it flat in a warm room and shake the foam. Measure after day 4, not day 1. Fabric creases fade over one to two weeks. A piece still flat after about a week gets replacement foam.

## Why the cushion in the box looks too small

A 94 in (239 cm) bench cushion can come out of its bag measuring 91 in (231 cm). Nothing is wrong. It is still waking up.

Foam cushions travel [vacuum-packed](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#vacuum-packing): air pressed out, the piece folded or rolled, the plastic sealed tight against the cover with no protective layer between. The first hour after opening looks like a mistake.

This is one of the worries we hear most after delivery. The honest vacuum packed cushion expand time is counted in days, not minutes. The squeezed foam cells refill with air slowly, length last, so length is the number that misleads on day one.

The gaps are small: about 3/4 in (2 cm) on an ordinary cushion, a couple of inches on a long one. One bench cushion grew from 92.5 in (235 cm) out of the bag to its ordered 95 in (241 cm) with nothing but time.

## The first week, one step at a time

1. **Snip the plastic at a loose corner**: The cover sits directly against the bag. Make one small snip where the plastic is loose, away from the fabric, and tear the rest by hand. No box cutter. No blade along the cover.
2. **Unwrap every piece on delivery day**: Open all the parcels, even the ones that look fine. The longer foam stays sealed, the longer it takes to rise.
3. **Lay it flat in a warm room**: Top side up, nothing stacked on it, nothing over it. Foam recovers faster around 75°F (24°C) and more slowly below 59°F (15°C).
4. **Work the foam with both hands**: Pull the cushion gently from both ends, then shake and knead it. If a piece is half-risen, unzip the cover, pinch and stretch the foam itself, and refit the cover. Fiber and shredded-foam backrests want a shake, like a pillow.
5. **Give it 48 to 72 hours before judging**: Most foam is back in shape within 24 to 72 hours; corners and L-shaped pieces are the slowest. A floor sofa can be used while it finishes, but seats rise more evenly unloaded for the first two days.
6. **Measure on day 4, against a wall**: The foam reaches its ordered size in 3 to 4 days, sometimes a week. Push one end flush against a wall and run the tape down the middle. Still short? Take tape photos or one continuous video with the numbers readable.
7. **After a week, send photos**: A section still flat, dented or hard after about a week, while the rest has recovered, has been treated as faulty foam. Photograph it from several angles. In past cases the replacement foam came in one piece, and the cover moved onto it.

> **Tailor's margin:** Measure a vacuum-packed cushion on day 4, not day 1. Straight out of the bag, a 94 in (239 cm) bench cushion can read 91 in (231 cm).

## The 94-inch cushion that came out at 91

A buyer in the US ordered a 16 x 94 in (41 x 239 cm) cushion for a long window bench. Out of the vacuum bag it measured 15.5 x 91 in (39 x 231 cm).

The workshop asked for 3 to 4 days. On day 5 it read 91.75 in (233 cm). Closer. Still short. The buyer sent a photo of the tape along the full length, and the workshop remade the cushion at 16 x 94 in and let the buyer keep the first one.

Wait before measuring, because most missing inches come back. When they do not, a clear tape photo settles it. How close is close enough is answered in [custom cushion size tolerance](https://cushionguide.com/guides/custom-cushion-size-tolerance/).

## Two or three weeks sealed, and no longer

A vacuum pack is for travel, not storage. Foam kept compressed for 2 to 3 weeks recovers. Past a month, recovery is not promised.

Past orders show the far end of that curve: a couch left sealed for a year and a half came out crumbly and never rose. Long storage also presses creases deep into a cover, velvet most of all.

If a cushion arrives before its room is ready, open it, let it expand, and store it uncompressed. Or time the order so cushion and room arrive together. When will your room actually be ready?

## Velvet and corduroy creases: steam, never press

Fabric is slower than foam. Creases fade over one to two weeks as the foam fills the cover, and a deep center crease takes 7 to 10 days. Pile fabrics show [pressure marks](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#pressure-marks) most: velvet looks bruised in patches, and corduroy pile lies in different directions.

- Lay the piece flat and uncovered for a few days, up to about 10.
- Brush [velvet](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/velvet/) by hand with the pile. Smooth [corduroy](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/corduroy/) along the ribs.
- To hurry it, hold a steamer on low a little away from the fabric. The iron's plate never touches the pile.
- Keep blankets off a newly unpacked sofa. Creases set under them.

If marks remain, send a photo; the workshop has replaced covers for sections that did not settle. Pile care continues in [velvet bench cushion care](https://cushionguide.com/guides/velvet-bench-cushion-care/).

## Mistakes past orders keep teaching

- ✗ Opening the bag with a knife. Two corduroy window-seat cushions, 77.25 x 22 in (196 x 56 cm) each, were cut along with their plastic.
- ✗ Measuring on delivery day.
- ✗ Leaving the box sealed until the weekend, or until the move.
- ✗ Reporting missing foam before the bag is fully open.
- ✗ A hot iron on velvet or linen-look fabric. The linen-look range is synthetic and can melt.

## Where to read next

A new-foam smell keeps its own timeline: [airing a new foam cushion](https://cushionguide.com/guides/new-foam-cushion-smell-airing/). A piece still wrong after full recovery: [remakes for wrong size or color](https://cushionguide.com/guides/custom-cushion-remake-wrong-size-color/). Inserts and floor sofas: [foam inserts](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/foam-inserts/) and [modular floor sofas](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/modular-floor-sofas/). Long seats: [bench cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bench-cushions/).

Flat is not broken.
Short is not final.
Give it four days.

## Two clocks: shape and creases

A compressed cushion recovers on two timetables. The foam comes first: small cushions regain their shape within hours, most within one to three days, and full recovery can take three to five days or occasionally up to a week, which is why measuring on day one reads short. The fabric follows: creases and compression marks fade as the foam pushes out against the cover, usually over one to two weeks, and steam held just above the surface speeds it up. Makers of boxed kids' sofas quote the same one-to-two-week window for every wrinkle to relax. Unpack within a few days of delivery, take the cover off to help the foam stretch, and don't leave foam vacuum-packed for more than two or three weeks.

## Buyer questions: flat, short and creased

**A common question:** My cushion came out of the box flat and thinner than the photos. Did I get the wrong one?

**The workshop's answer:** No. Cushions are tightly vacuum-packed, so they often arrive flat, thin or folded. Most regain their shape within 24 to 48 hours; allow 48 to 72 hours, up to 3 to 5 days, before judging. Pulling, shaking and kneading speeds it up. If a piece still hasn't filled out, photos bring a replacement.

**A common question:** The bench cushion measures a couple of inches under what I ordered. Is that the packing?

**The workshop's answer:** Usually, yes. Foam measures short out of the bag and keeps expanding for 3 to 5 days, up to about a week. Pull it gently from both ends and re-measure only after full recovery. If it is still short, send tape-measure photos or a continuous video with readable numbers.

**A common question:** Can I leave the cushion sealed in its bag until we move in?

**The workshop's answer:** Not for long. Foam recovers fine within a few weeks, but it shouldn't stay compressed beyond 2 to 3 weeks, and recovery isn't promised past a month. Unpack it, let it expand, then store it uncompressed.

**A common question:** Everything expanded except one seat cushion. What now?

**The workshop's answer:** Take the cover off, shake, pull and pinch the foam, and wait a few more days. If a section is still flat or hard while the rest has recovered, send photos from different angles. A new foam piece ships with tracking, and the workshop will ask how long the box sat unopened.

**A common question:** How long before our vacuum-packed floor sofa looks like the photos?

**The workshop's answer:** Most pieces fill out in 24 to 36 hours and reach the photographed shape in about 36 to 48 hours; full firmness takes 3 to 5 days. Shaking helps, and the sofa can be used meanwhile. If a piece is still flat after another 4 to 5 days, photograph it and ask the workshop about a replacement insert.

## Small questions about the first week

### Does a cold room slow foam recovery?

Yes. Foam re-expands faster around 75°F (24°C) or above and more slowly below 59°F (15°C). In winter, open the parcel in a heated room and allow the long end of the 48 to 72 hour window.

### Are cover-only orders vacuum-packed too?

No. Covers ordered without foam are not compressed, so they arrive without the pressure marks a packed cushion can show. Covers can also be packed uncompressed on request.

### Is the loose cord beside a tufting button a stray thread?

No. On tufted cushions it is the tufting rope anchoring the button; tuck it back under rather than cutting it. Tufted pieces are filled with fiber, not foam, and plump up with a good shake.

### What is the best way to photograph a cushion that still seems short?

Lay it on the floor with one end flush against a wall and photograph the tape along the full length with the numbers readable, or record one continuous video. Do it after day 4.
