# Corner floor sofa layouts: L-shapes, U-shapes, open or closed corners, straight runs

*The pieces stay the same. The room decides the shape. Here is how each layout adds up, in inches and in walking space.*

> **The quick answer:** A modular floor sofa can be laid out straight, as an L, as an open or closed corner, or as a U, all from the same pieces. Seats are about 79 x 39 in (200 x 100 cm) and the ottoman 39 x 39 in (100 x 100 cm). A closed corner needs about 79 x 118 in (200 x 300 cm), plus walkway space.

## One kit, many rooms

Every layout on this page starts from the same few parts.

A standard modular floor sofa is two seat mattresses of about 79 x 39 x 6.5 in (200 x 100 x 17 cm), two L-shaped backrests of 39 x 39 x 15 in (100 x 100 x 39 cm) and four [metal support bars](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#metal-support-bars). Seat height is about 13.5 to 14.5 in (34 to 37 cm).

Two more parts change the shape. A straight backrest, about 39 in (100 cm) long. And an [ottoman](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#ottoman), 39 x 39 in (100 x 100 cm), close to seat height, folding open into a longer rectangle in the same foam.

The modules are not fastened to each other. The bars hold the backrests up. Non-slip fabric under the seat bases and the ottoman keeps them from wandering, and a rug helps on a hard floor.

That is the whole kit. More shapes and sizes live on the [modular floor sofas](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/modular-floor-sofas/) page of the Atlas.

## Seven layouts from the same modules

| Layout | What it takes | Footprint | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Straight sofa | 2 seat mattresses, 2 L-shaped backrests, 4 metal bars | About 79 x 39 in (200 x 100 cm) | Seats 2, sometimes 3; opens to a bed of about 79 x 79 in |
| Straight + ottoman as a chaise | Sofa plus a 39 x 39 in ottoman in front of either end | About 79 x 79 in (200 x 200 cm) | Feet up; the ottoman unfolds into a further 39 x 79 in bed |
| Three-seater run | Sofa with ottoman, plus 1 straight backrest | About 118 x 39 in (300 x 100 cm) | One long wall with back support for three |
| L from two sofas | 2 sofas, with straight backrests swapped in where the runs meet | About 79 x 118 in (200 x 300 cm) | A sectional by day, a guest bed by night |
| Closed corner | 3 L-shaped backrests + 1 straight | About 79 x 118 in (200 x 300 cm) | Both ends wrapped; reversible left or right |
| Open corner | 2 L-shaped backrests + 2 straight | About 117 x 78 in (297 x 198 cm) | One end left open like a chaise |
| U | A custom-size L plus an extra ottoman on the other side | Drawn to your room, module by module | Conversation pits and large families |

## Open corner or closed: a question of one backrest

The difference sits at the end of the run.

A closed corner ends with an L-shaped backrest that wraps around the end. Three L-shaped backrests and one straight, about 79 x 118 in (200 x 300 cm). Both ends are held.

An [open corner](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#open-corner) ends with a straight backrest. Two L-shaped and two straight. That end stays open, like a chaise, and you can lie back with your feet toward the room.

Neither has a fixed hand. The cushions have no direction, so the open end or the ottoman can sit left or right. Move the L-shaped backrest to the other corner and the sofa turns with it.

If you want one side from day one, write it in the order note. Write the configuration too: open or closed corner, which backrests, each piece's size. A closed corner has gone out where an open one was meant. The note is how that stops.

## Room math, with a path to walk

Start with the footprint. Then add the path around it.

A comfortable walkway is about 36 in (91 cm). At 42 in (107 cm) it feels easy.

- Straight sofa against a wall: 39 in deep plus 36 in of path is 75 in (191 cm) from the wall to the next piece of furniture.
- Ottoman in front as a chaise: 78 in plus 36 in is 114 in (290 cm).
- Closed corner tucked into a corner of the room: 79 x 118 in, plus 36 in along each open side, is about 115 x 154 in (292 x 391 cm) of floor. Roughly 9 ft 7 in by 12 ft 10 in.
- Bed mode: two seat mattresses side by side make about 79 x 79 in (200 x 200 cm), close to a king. Each one alone is about a [twin XL](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#twin-xl).

Leave a hand's width of floor where you can. A low sofa with bare floor around it lets a small room breathe. The [floor sofa buying guide](https://cushionguide.com/guides/floor-sofa-buying-guide-height-space/) covers height, and [small apartment layouts](https://cushionguide.com/concepts/small-apartment-floor-sofa-layouts/) shows the tight rooms.

What does your longest free wall measure? That number usually picks the layout before anything else does.

## Two sofas, one sectional: how two households did it

Two buyers in the US came to the same answer from different directions.

The first, a couple, had sat on a firm sofa in a showroom and wanted an L-shaped sectional that could also sleep guests. The workshop suggested two straight floor sofas, with two corner backrests replaced by straight ones. The first delivery held three corner cushions and one straight, so the missing straight backrest followed. They let everything expand overnight and called the couch perfect.

The second buyer already owned an L-shaped corner floor sofa and ordered another in mustard [corduroy](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/corduroy/), to join both into one big sectional or bed. The workshop added two extra straight backrests without sides, free. Seven of eight packages arrived; the straight backrests were missing, and one corner bolster was still soft in the middle after 3 days. The workshop made and sent both straight backrests, then a replacement corner backrest.

The pair became a [conversation pit](https://cushionguide.com/concepts/conversation-pit-floor-lounges/), and a bed larger than a king.

Straight backrests are the hinge of both stories. Where two runs meet, a corner backrest is one wrap too many.

## Adding pieces now, or next year

Modules are sold on their own. A 39 x 39 in ottoman, alone or with a straight backrest and one metal bar, can join an existing sofa. A buyer in the US ordered only that trio, in brick corduroy, so her corner layout would seat three with back support.

Adding the ottoman with a corner backrest turns a straight sofa into an L. Upgrading to an L or a full corner is charged as the price difference. Buying the base first and adding modules later is a reasonable plan.

One caution. Each fabric roll is dyed in its own batch, and a piece cut months later can sit a shade lighter or warmer. Order every piece of a set together when you can. When you can't, send a photo of the original, ask for a batch match, and ask for a daylight photo of the new piece before it ships. The [dye lot guide](https://cushionguide.com/guides/dye-lots-matching-cushions-later/) explains why.

For a U, draw the room on paper and label each seat by module. A custom-size L with an extra ottoman on the other side closes the U.

Same pieces.
Different rooms.
The floor decides.

## Where layouts go wrong

- ✗ Leaving the configuration out of the order note: open or closed corner, L-shaped or straight backrests, each piece's size.
- ✗ Ordering an add-on months later without a photo of the original, and meeting a new dye lot.
- ✗ Judging a vacuum-packed backrest on day one. Corners and L-pieces can take up to 3 days to recover.
- ✗ Opening the vacuum pack with a blade along the fabric. Cut only the outer plastic, at a corner, with blunt scissors.
- ✗ Expecting the modules to lock together. Nothing is fastened; the bars and the non-slip base do the holding.
- ✗ Unpacking every parcel before checking one end of each roll pack for the right color and piece.

> **Tailor's margin:** In a two-sofa L, straight backrests go where the runs meet. A corner backrest there is one wrap too many.

> A closed-corner modular floor sofa takes about 79 x 118 in of floor. Add 36 in of walkway on each open side before you order.

## Buyer questions: corners, ottomans and bars

**A common question:** What does 'open corner' mean on a corner floor sofa, and how is it different from closed?

**The workshop's answer:** It's the backrest at the end of the run. A closed corner ends in an L-shaped backrest that wraps the end: 3 L-shaped plus 1 straight, about 79 x 118 in (200 x 300 cm). An open corner ends in a straight backrest, leaving that end open like a chaise: 2 L-shaped plus 2 straight. Choose the open option or write it in the order note; an extra straight backrest lets you switch between the two.

**A common question:** Can two straight floor sofas become one L-shaped sectional?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Order two of the same sofa, together or one later, and the workshop sends 1 straight and 1 L-shaped backrest instead of 2 L-shaped ones, or leaves a backrest off. The straight backrest costs less, so the difference is refunded. Colors can be mixed piece by piece.

**A common question:** I already own the floor sofa. Can I order just the ottoman in the same color?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. The 39 x 39 in (100 x 100 cm) ottoman comes filled and can be ordered alone or with a straight or L-shaped backrest and a metal bar. It lies flat and unfolds to about twin size. Buyers add one months or a year after the sofa, and later orders are made to match.

**A common question:** How big a bed does the floor sofa make?

**The workshop's answer:** Each seat mattress is 39 x 79 in (100 x 200 cm), about a twin XL. Side by side they make roughly 79 x 79 in, close to a king. The ottoman opens into another 39 x 79 in, so the corner version lays out larger than a king, enough for 2 adults and 2 children.

**A common question:** How many metal bars come with each layout?

**The workshop's answer:** A single sofa comes with 4 bars, a three-seater uses 5, the L-shape with ottoman 6, and a full corner set 8 large and 8 small pieces; any extras are spares. A plain ottoman needs none, and one with a backrest includes its holder. Bars may ship in their own parcel. If one is missing, send a photo and get the workshop's answer in writing.

## Layout questions, briefly

### Can the chaise end of a floor sofa sit on the left instead of the right?

Yes. The cushions have no fixed direction, so the open end, the short side or the ottoman can go either way. Move the L-shaped backrest to the other corner. If you want the chaise on one side from the start, write it in the order note.

### Are the floor sofa modules fastened to each other?

No. There is no hook-and-loop between the pieces. The metal bars hold the backrests and armrests in place, and non-slip fabric under the seat bases and ottoman keeps them from sliding. On a hard floor, a rug or anti-slip mat helps.

### How much room does a corner floor sofa need?

A closed corner is about 79 x 118 in (200 x 300 cm). Add a walkway of about 36 in (91 cm) on each open side, 42 in (107 cm) if you can, and plan for roughly 115 x 154 in (292 x 391 cm) of floor.

### Will a module ordered a year later match my sofa?

Close, but not guaranteed. Each fabric roll is dyed in its own batch, and tone shifts slightly between batches. Send a photo of your sofa, ask for a batch match, and ask for a daylight photo of the new piece before it ships.

### Can a modular floor sofa be made as a U?

Yes. Draw the room on paper and label each seat by module. On the classic modular range, a custom-size L-shaped sectional with an extra ottoman on the other side forms the U.
