# How to raise floor sofa seat height, layer by layer

*A floor sofa sits low on purpose. Sometimes it sits too low for the people who live with it. There are a few honest ways up, and each one changes the back.*

> **The quick answer:** A floor sofa seat sits about 13.5 to 14.5 in (34 to 37 cm) off the floor, and the simplest way to raise it is to add a layer. A custom 4 to 5 in layer lands the seat near 18 to 19 in, close to couch height. A third full layer reaches about 21 in. Raise the backrest as well, or it ends up lower against your back.

![Three cream velvet floor cushions stacked into a sofa with cobalt, raspberry and mustard ends, and a loose bolster](https://cushionguide.com/media/modular-floor-sofas/stacked-velvet-floor-sofa-cobalt-raspberry-mustard-1600.webp "Three base cushions stacked into one tall sofa, each with a different end color, with a spare bolster on the floor.")

## Fourteen inches, and the six that are missing

Fourteen inches. That is roughly where a modular floor sofa seat sits. A regular couch sits nearer 18 to 19 in.

The seat is two stacked foam mattresses, each roughly 6.5 to 7 in (17 cm) thick, on a 79 x 39 in (200 x 100 cm) footprint. The foam is a medium-hard, high-density [cold foam](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#cold-foam), most often quoted as T28. On this model the layer thickness is fixed. Requests for 8 in and 10 in seat mattresses have been declined.

So the seat does not get thicker. It gets taller, by stacking.

Height is a feeling. It matters most to the people who stand up slowly. Before you add anything, have everyone who will use the [floor sofa](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/modular-floor-sofas/) sit for ten minutes, then rise. Watch who reaches for a hand.

## Add up the layers in the seat height calculator

The [seat height calculator](https://cushionguide.com/studio/seat-height-calculator/) was drawn for benches. It works for floor seating too. Enter the lower layers, or a platform, as the bench. Enter the new top layer as the cushion. It adds them and draws the stack to scale.

Then hold the result against the sitter's knee. Sit on a chair with bare feet flat and measure from the floor to the back of the knee. A seat near that height lets the feet rest flat. A floor sofa sits below it for most adults. That is the design, not a defect.

If your target lands above 20 in, you have left floor seating behind. A [bench cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bench-cushions/) on a real bench, or a chair, will serve better.

Who in your home stands up most slowly? Start with their number.

## Where each option puts the seat

| Option | Seat lands at | Back support | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard: two stacked layers | about 13.5 to 14.5 in (34 to 37 cm) | L-shaped backrests 15 in (39 cm) tall, held by metal bars | Freestanding; the bars stop the backs sliding |
| One layer only | about 6.5 to 7 in (17 cm) | Confirm the backrest setup when ordering | The way to go lower, for a child's room |
| Add a custom 4 in layer | about 18 in (46 cm) | The back sits lower against you unless it is raised too | Order a matching layer for the ottoman |
| Add a custom 5 in layer | about 19 in (48 cm) | Ask for extra back pieces if it feels low | The route one buyer took to couch height |
| Add a third full layer | about 21 in (53 cm) | Bars standing on the floor may no longer hold the backs | Bars still work if they sit on the first base layer |
| Low platform under the sofa | platform plus about 14 in | Unchanged, if the bars stand on the platform | The platform must be at least the full 79 x 39 in footprint |
| Two 6 in floor cushions stacked | about 12 in (30 cm) | None built in; lean on a wall | Often costs less than one 12 in cushion |

Heights add the layers at full recovery and are approximate; foam softens slightly with use.

## Raising the seat in eight measured moves

1. **Let the foam recover**: [Vacuum-packed](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#vacuum-packing) foam grows back slowly. Give it 36 to 48 hours or more before you measure. A seat that seems small on the first day usually has not finished expanding.
2. **Measure the seat you have**: Floor to the top of the seat at the front edge, with nobody on it. The standard sofa reads about 13.5 to 14.5 in. Measure the floor to the top of the backrest as well.
3. **Measure the sitter**: Seated on a chair, bare feet flat, floor to the back of the knee. Measure everyone who will use the sofa daily. Plan for the one who rises most slowly.
4. **Find the gap, then the layer**: Target height minus the seat you have is the layer you need. 19 in minus 14 in is 5 in. Custom layers of 4 or 5 in are made, and full seat layers are sold on their own.
5. **Decide what the back does**: Every inch added under you is an inch less backrest above the seat, unless the back rises too. Compare the new top of the backrest with the sitter's shoulder blades. If it falls low, extra cushion pieces can be added; padding took one set from 16 to 20 in, floor to top of backrest.
6. **Keep the bars on a cushion**: The [metal support bars](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#metal-support-bars) hold the backrests. They still work when they sit on the first base layer. Standing on the floor beneath three stacked layers, they may not. The [support bar guide](https://cushionguide.com/guides/floor-sofa-support-bars-assembly/) shows how they fit.
7. **Raise the ottoman with the seat**: The ottoman is 39 x 39 in (100 x 100 cm), about 14½ in (37 cm) high, in the same foam. Order a matching layer for it so the seat and ottoman stay level.
8. **Or stack floor cushions**: For a tufted floor seat, two 6 in cushions stacked make a 12 in seat and often cost less than one 12 in cushion. Stack foam cores. Fiber-filled cushions round off at the edges and slide on each other.

## A mustard corduroy sofa, raised to 19 in

A buyer in the US liked the mustard teddy floor sofa in [corduroy](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/corduroy/). They wanted the seat about 18 to 19 in high, like a regular couch.

Two stacked layers of roughly 7 in were too low. Three would reach 21 in, too high. So the workshop made one 5 in layer through a custom order. It took 4 to 5 days to make and 3 to 5 days to deliver. The seat landed at about 19 in.

The first delivery looked short. The missing fourth parcel arrived the next day. A sofa travels in pieces, so count parcels before you count problems.

A thinner layer, not a whole cushion. That was the answer.

## In a small room, the top matters as much as the seat

A parent wrote to the workshop about a tiny house on wheels. They needed a frameless floor sofa about 77 in wide and no taller than 30 in, opening to 60 to 65 in for sleeping.

The workshop suggested the modular corduroy sofa: 78.5 in wide, 29 in high and 39 in deep, with a 14 in seat. It sent those numbers first, so the family could tape them out before ordering.

In a room like that, a raised seat is not the only number that moves. Add a layer and measure the overall height again, under the window, the loft or the shelf. More ideas for tight rooms are in [tiny house and loft floor seating](https://cushionguide.com/concepts/tiny-house-and-loft-floor-seating/), and the [floor sofa buying guide](https://cushionguide.com/guides/floor-sofa-buying-guide-height-space/) covers space and height together.

Low is restful.
Too low is a chore.
Measure the person, then the foam.

## Common mistakes when raising a floor sofa

- ✗ Measuring on the first day, before vacuum-packed foam has recovered.
- ✗ Adding a full-thickness cushion when a thinner custom layer would land on target.
- ✗ Raising the seat and forgetting the backrest, which then sits lower against the back.
- ✗ Standing the metal bars on the floor under three stacked layers.
- ✗ Raising the sofa but not the ottoman, so the two no longer line up.
- ✗ Stacking fiber-filled cushions. They round off and slide; stack foam.
- ✗ Checking the height for yourself only. Check it for everyone, especially older family members.
- ✗ Expecting a 20 in chair seat from floor seating. If someone needs an upright seat, choose a bench or chair cushion instead.

> **Tailor's margin:** Measure a floor sofa's seat height only after the foam has had 36 to 48 hours out of the vacuum pack. Early numbers read low.

## Buyer questions: when the seat is too low

**A common question:** The floor sofa sits too low for us. How can we raise it?

**The workshop's answer:** The seat is about 13.5 to 14.5 in off the floor, and the 39 x 75 in convertible couch is 24 in from the floor to the top of the backrest. You can stack an extra seat cushion of 78 x 39 x 6.5 in, add a pair of flat base mattresses sold on their own, or add padding; one set went from 16 to 20 in floor to top of backrest. A thinner custom 4 to 5 in layer can bring the seat to about 19 in. A floor sofa stays low by design, so it may not suit guests who need a 20 in seat.

**A common question:** Could the seat mattresses simply be made thicker instead?

**The workshop's answer:** Not on this model. The seat mattresses are made only at the standard thickness in 28-density high-density foam, and requests for 8 in (21 cm) and 10 in seats have been declined. Each mattress is roughly 7 in thick, and the two stacked make the seat. They are comfortable to sleep on; one buyer's guests used them as single beds. To sit higher, add an extra stacked cushion or base mattresses.

**A common question:** Can the floor sofa go taller, or lower?

**The workshop's answer:** Taller: buy an extra base cushion and stack it; extra base cushions are priced per piece, with a lower price for two. The metal bars still work if they sit on the first base cushion, but standing on the floor under three stacked cushions they may not. Lower: the sofa can be made with one floor cushion instead of two, or you can order just an ottoman with two L-shaped backrests.

**A common question:** How high is the seat, and what if it still feels too low after unpacking?

**The workshop's answer:** About 13.5 in (34 to 35 cm) from the floor, two stacked 6¾ in (17 cm) cushions. Vacuum-packed foam needs 36 to 48 hours or more before you measure; a cushion that looks small usually hasn't finished expanding. If it is still too low, extra seat cushions or foam layers of 4 or 8 in are sold through a direct link, with a matching layer for the ottoman so the heights line up.

**A common question:** How big is the ottoman, and does it open out?

**The workshop's answer:** The ottoman is 39 x 39 in (about 100 x 100 cm): one connected piece whose two stacked layers fold open into a longer rectangle, in the same foam as the sofa. The layers can be made as separate pieces on request, and the main seat mattresses can also be made as two foldable ottoman-style pieces.

## Seat height questions, briefly

### Is a stacked pair of floor cushions cheaper than one thick cushion?

Often, yes. A 12 in cushion costs considerably more, and one buyer cut a large quote by about a third by ordering two 6 in seat cushions per seat to stack. Within the standard 2 to 5 in range, thickness does not change the price; beyond it, cushions are quoted by size.

### Can a floor sofa sit on a low platform instead of extra foam?

It can, if the platform is at least as large as the footprint, about 79 x 39 in (200 x 100 cm) for the single sofa. The seat then sits at the platform height plus about 14 in. Stand the metal bars on the platform, not on the floor beside it.

### Does adding a layer make the floor sofa seat softer?

No. Height changes, firmness does not. The seat layers are medium-hard T28 cold foam that softens slightly with use, and added layers are foam as well. If the back is what feels hard, backrests are filled with shredded foam or fiber and extra pieces can be added.

### Can a modular floor sofa be made lower for a child's room?

Yes. It can be made with one floor cushion instead of two, which roughly halves the seat height, or you can order just the ottoman with two L-shaped backrests for a smaller, lower corner.
