# Floor seating for real evenings: cushions, corner seats and low sofas

*Five ways to sit low. They differ in three numbers: how high the seat is, what holds your back, and how much floor they take.*

> **The quick answer:** Floor seating comes in five common forms: a tufted floor cushion about 4 in high, a 34 x 34 in corner floor cushion, a tufted set with a 16 in backrest and two bolsters, a kids' floor sofa about 8 in thick, and a modular floor sofa with a 14 in seat. Choose by back support first.

## What a floor chair is really for

Most people who search for a floor chair are not asking for a softer seat. They are asking for something to lean on.

That changes the answer. A thicker cushion lifts you. It does not hold you. On the floor, support comes from three places: a wall, a corner, or a backrest with something standing behind it.

This Pattern compares five kinds of **floor seating** by the three numbers that decide how an evening feels: seat height, back support and footprint. The photos show corner floor cushions and one kids' floor sofa, in real rooms.

Where does your back rest when you sit on the floor now?

## Floor cushion, corner cushion, floor sofa: five ways to sit low

| Format | Seat height | Back support | Footprint | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tufted floor cushion | About 4 in (10 cm); 6 to 12 in to order | None of its own; a wall or pillows | Made to your space; standard depths 24 or 27 in (61 or 69 cm) | Low tables, games, extra seats |
| Corner floor cushion | 4 in (10 cm) tufted; 8 in (20 cm) foam | The two walls; backrest pillows can be added | 34 x 34 in (86 x 86 cm) default; up to 48 in (122 cm) per side | One adult reading, or two small children |
| Tufted floor cushion set | About 4 in (10 cm) | A 16 in (40 cm) backrest and two round bolsters, leaning on a wall | The seat size; 28 x 64 in (70 x 160 cm) seats three | The nearest thing to a floor chair for a family |
| Kids' floor sofa | About 8 in (20 cm) | The corner walls, or a play couch's own backrest | Corners from 32 to 47 in (80 to 120 cm) per side | Playrooms and reading corners |
| Modular floor sofa | About 13.5 to 14.5 in (34 to 37 cm) | L-shaped backrests on metal bars; no wall needed | 79 x 39 in (200 x 100 cm) | A daily sofa that also sleeps a guest |

## The wall, the corner, or the bars

A corner floor cushion borrows two walls. Sit back and they take your shoulders. The two gingham corners in the gallery add a pair of backrest pillows against those walls. Real orders have done the same: a 34 x 34 in corner cushion with two matching back cushions, and a 38 x 38 in one with a single backrest 15 3/4 in (40 cm) tall.

A tufted floor cushion set brings its own backrest, 16 in (40 cm) tall and as long as the seat, plus two round bolsters for arms. It does not stand on its own. It leans on a wall. If your seat has to sit away from the wall, a back-supported version or a metal frame for the backrest can be arranged; ask the workshop about that build. The sizes are in [tufted floor cushion sets](https://cushionguide.com/guides/tufted-floor-couch-set-sizes/).

Only the [modular floor sofa](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/modular-floor-sofas/) holds open floor by itself. Metal bars at the sides and behind the backrests keep it upright. It is also the highest seat here, about 14 in. How that height feels is covered in [is a floor sofa right for you](https://cushionguide.com/guides/floor-sofa-buying-guide-height-space/).

So the floor chair question has a short answer. For one person, a [corner floor cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/corner-floor-cushions/). For two or three against a wall, a set with a backrest. For the middle of a room, the modular sofa.

A cushion lifts.

A wall holds.

Choose the holding first.

## Small-apartment layouts, by the floor they take

| Where | Floor seating | What it takes |
|---|---|---|
| One empty corner of a studio | Corner floor cushion, 34 x 34 in (86 x 86 cm) | 34 in along each wall from the corner |
| A wall under a low window | Tufted set: seat, 16 in (40 cm) backrest, two bolsters | The seat's length of wall; the backrest's 4 in (10 cm) can add to the depth |
| Around a low coffee or dining table | Floor cushions 3 to 4 in (7.5 to 10 cm) thick | Room for knees under the tabletop |
| Under a loft bed | Floor cushion 24 x 70 or 27 x 70 in (61 x 178 or 69 x 178 cm) | A sleepover bed by night, a long seat by day |
| A living room with no couch | Modular floor sofa | 79 x 39 in (200 x 100 cm); a closed corner 79 x 118 in (200 x 300 cm) |
| A playroom corner | Kids' corner floor sofa, 39 x 39 in (100 x 100 cm) | 39 in along each wall, 8 in (20 cm) high |
| A flat wall with no corner | Two quarter-round corner cushions side by side | A half circle against the wall |

## Choosing floor seating in five quiet steps

1. **Sit where it will go**: Sit on the bare floor in that spot for ten minutes. Notice where your back goes looking for support. That tells you the format before any photo does.
2. **Name the support**: Wall, corner or bars. If none of the three is there, a thicker cushion will not stand in for it.
3. **Tape the footprint**: Mark the outline with painter's tape. A corner cushion is measured along the two walls from the back corner, never across the diagonal or along the curve. Check baseboards and outlets while the tape is down.
4. **Choose the height for the use**: About 4 in (10 cm) is the tufted standard. Go 3 to 4 in so legs slide under a low table, 6 to 8 in to sit higher or to sleep. Published guides from other makers land in the same place: 3 to 4 in for play, 4 to 6 in for everyday sitting, 8 in or more for lounging. The full range is in [floor cushion thickness](https://cushionguide.com/guides/floor-cushion-thickness-guide/).
5. **Give it grip**: On hardwood or tile, put a rug or grip mat under floor seating. Loose pieces drift a little every time someone sits down.

## A corner that needed one more back

A buyer in the US had a floor sofa set up in a corner. She wanted it to seat three people, each with something to lean on.

She did not buy a second sofa. She asked for only the pieces the third seat was missing: the 39 x 39 in (100 x 100 cm) ottoman, one straight backrest, and one metal bar to hold it upright. The workshop made them as a custom order in brick [corduroy](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/corduroy/).

The seat was never the problem. The back was. One backrest and one bar turned the end of a corner into a place to lean.

Modular pieces can be bought on their own and added later, even a year later, and they are made to match. More ways to arrange them are in [small apartment floor sofa layouts](https://cushionguide.com/concepts/small-apartment-floor-sofa-layouts/) and [tiny house and loft floor seating](https://cushionguide.com/concepts/tiny-house-and-loft-floor-seating/).

## Where floor seating plans go wrong

- ✗ Ordering a thicker cushion when what you wanted was a backrest.
- ✗ Expecting a cushion backrest to stand in the middle of a room. It leans on a wall.
- ✗ Measuring a corner cushion across the diagonal, or along the curve.
- ✗ Choosing a 6 in seat for a low table. One buyer's knees and table disagreed, and the seat became 3 in.
- ✗ Choosing fabric for looks alone. For kids and pets, a tight, washable weave in a mid-tone, with zip-off covers.
- ✗ Leaving floor seating loose on bare hardwood.

> **Tailor's margin:** Leave a hand's width of floor between the seat and the next wall or chest. The room reads larger, and you can still clean behind it.

## Buyer questions: heights, beds and extra pieces

**A common question:** How thick is a standard floor cushion, and can it be made thinner?

**The workshop's answer:** The standard tufted floor cushion is about 4 in (10 cm), some listings 4 to 5 in. The velvet floor seat is about 6 in and the deep-base floor couch 12 in (30 cm). Any thickness can be made: 3 to 4 in so legs fit under a low table, which also lowers the price, or thicker to sit higher. Dense filling takes years to flatten.

**A common question:** Could a floor cushion double as a bed, and what size would I need?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. They are solid enough to sleep on, and many are used for children's sleepovers. Under a loft bed, 24 x 70 or 27 x 70 in is typical; a twin is about 38 x 75 in. For someone about 5 ft 9 in, the 30 x 73 in tufted set was suggested. A 6 or 8 in thickness sits higher off the floor. For a toddler, the workshop points to its separate kids' foam bed.

**A common question:** Can I buy only the ottoman to go with the floor sofa I already have?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. The ottoman is 39 x 39 in (100 x 100 cm), comes filled, and is sold alone or with a straight or L-shaped backrest and a metal bar, in your sofa's color. On the corner sofa it lies flat and unfolds to about twin size. Buyers add one months or a year later, and it is made to match.

**A common question:** What is the difference between an open corner and a closed corner?

**The workshop's answer:** The backrest at the end of the run. A closed corner ends in an L-shaped backrest that wraps the end: 3 L-shaped and 1 straight, about 79 x 118 in (200 x 300 cm). An open corner ends in a straight backrest and stays open like a chaise: 2 L-shaped and 2 straight. Ask for it in the order note; an extra straight backrest lets you switch.

**A common question:** If guests sleep on the floor sofa, is it a queen or a king?

**The workshop's answer:** Each seat mattress is 39 x 79 in (100 x 200 cm), about a twin XL. Side by side they make about 79 x 79 in, roughly king size. The corner version with its ottoman lays out larger still, enough for two adults and two children. As a sofa, a single one seats two, sometimes three.

## Floor seating, briefly

### What floor seating gives the most back support?

The modular floor sofa: L-shaped backrests held by metal bars, a seat about 14 in (36 cm) high, and no wall needed. Against a wall, a tufted set with its 16 in (40 cm) backrest and two bolsters comes next, then a corner cushion that uses the two walls.

### How much floor does a corner floor cushion need?

It is sized by its two straight sides along the walls. The 34 x 34 in (86 x 86 cm) default takes 34 in along each wall from the corner. The standard maximum is 48 in per side, where the curved front edge runs about 75.4 in (191.5 cm).

### How deep should a floor cushion be for sitting cross-legged?

Standard floor cushions are 24 or 27 in (61 or 69 cm) deep. An adult who sits cross-legged should order at least 28 in (71 cm). Depth is the front-to-back measurement, so write sizes as length x depth x thickness.

### How is a kids' floor sofa different from a foam play couch?

Foam play couches from other makers commonly share a 66 x 33 in (168 x 84 cm) base with a seat about 8.5 in high. The workshop's kids' corner floor sofa is one solid 8 in (20 cm) foam block with a removable cover, sized to your corner.
