# CertiPUR-US foam explained: what the seal certifies and how to check it

*Buyers ask the workshop whether the foam is CertiPUR. The straight answer takes a spec sheet, a directory search and one plain admission about the workshop's own foam, so here are all three.*

> **The quick answer:** CertiPUR-US certifies flexible polyurethane foam only, not the cover fabric or the finished cushion. Foam with the seal is made without formaldehyde, PBDE flame retardants, mercury, lead and CPSC-regulated phthalates, and emits under 0.5 ppm of VOCs. To verify a claim, look up the brand or its foam producer in the program's public directory; if neither is listed, the program cannot vouch for it.

## One component, one seal

CertiPUR-US certifies exactly one part of a cushion: the flexible polyurethane foam inside it. Not the cover fabric, not the zipper, not the finished cushion. I read it like a spec sheet, so here are the line items.

The program is run by the Alliance for Flexible Polyurethane Foam, a nonprofit founded in 1994. It certifies foam, not furniture, product lines or companies, and producers from any country can take part. Foam carrying the seal is:

- made without formaldehyde and ozone depleters
- made without PBDE, TDCPP and TCEP flame retardants
- made without mercury, lead and other heavy metals
- made without phthalates regulated by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission
- low in VOC emissions, under 0.5 ppm
- tested for durability, emissions and content by independent, accredited labs

Each foam type is tested every 6 months in its first year, then yearly. Buyers ask the workshop "is the foam CertiPUR?" regularly; here's how to answer that for any maker, the partner workshop included.

## CertiPUR-US vs CertiPUR vs OEKO-TEX: who certifies what

| | CertiPUR-US | CertiPUR (Europe) | OEKO-TEX Standard 100 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Run by | Alliance for Flexible Polyurethane Foam | EUROPUR | OEKO-TEX and its member institutes |
| Covers | Flexible polyurethane foam only | Flexible polyurethane foam for bedding and upholstery | Textiles, every component tested against 1,000+ substances |
| Who holds it | Foam producers; brands register to use the name | Foam producers, listed as label holders | The company named on the certificate |
| Retesting | Every 6 months in year one, then yearly | Yearly, by independent labs | Certificates run for 1 year |
| How to check | Public directory on the program's site | Public list of label holders and authorized users | Label Check, by certificate number or QR code |

## Verify any CertiPUR-US claim in eight checks

1. **Copy the exact words**: Screenshot the claim. "CertiPUR-US foam", "CertiPUR foam" and "meets CertiPUR standards" are three different statements, and only the first names the US program.
2. **Pin down the component**: The seal applies only to polyurethane foam. Stretched over fabric, fiber fill or "all materials", it has been misread. A fiber-filled tufted cushion has no foam for it to cover.
3. **Ask for the foam producer**: Brands that use the name must register, renew yearly and name their foam producer. A seller who can't name one can't show you the chain.
4. **Search the directory**: Look up the brand and the producer in the directory on the program's own site. If neither is listed, the program can't vouch for the claim.
5. **Match the foam type**: Certification runs per foam type, so the listed foam should be the kind in your cushion, not another grade from the same plant.
6. **Check the dates**: Retesting runs every 6 months in year one, then yearly. A certificate from years back proves only that it was valid then.
7. **No -US on the label? Check Europe**: The European program, run by EUROPUR, lists its label holders, who are foam producers; their certificates name foam families such as high-resilience or standard polyether.
8. **Read the wording against the rules**: The program pre-approves marketing that uses its name and bans some words outright. Banned wording is a red flag, and misuse can be reported.

## The words a certified maker may not use

CertiPUR-US allows a short vocabulary: the "made without" list above, "low VOC", "durability-, emissions- and content-tested", and "analyzed by independent, accredited testing laboratories."

It bans more than it allows. A participating brand may not call its foam safe, hypoallergenic, eco-friendly, green, sustainable, recycled or renewable, or promise freedom from chemicals, toxins or carcinogens. Even "made without flame retardants" is off the list, so fire facts should be stated plainly and neutrally. The Patterns on [TB 117-2013 fire rules](https://cushionguide.com/guides/tb-117-2013-cushion-fire-rules/) and [flame-retardant-free cushions](https://cushionguide.com/guides/flame-retardant-free-cushions/) cover that side, and the glossary has [CertiPUR-US](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#certipur-us).

## Where the workshop's own foam stands

Straight numbers, partner. The workshop is not in the CertiPUR-US directory, so that seal isn't claimed for its foam.

What the workshop does state: bench, banquette and seat cushions use high-density polyurethane foam at about 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³), medium-firm, in every custom cushion unless you ask for softer. Floor-sofa seats use a medium-hard foam at about 1.75 lb/ft³ (28 kg/m³). Tufted floor cushions have no foam core; they're packed with polyester fiber clusters. Its fabrics come from a mill certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100 (03.T.3239).

If a certificate matters to you, ask for the document before ordering and run it through the checks above. The [foam density](https://cushionguide.com/guides/foam-density-lb-ft3-kg-m3/) Pattern explains the units, the [foam inserts](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/foam-inserts/) hub shows the builds, the [foam firmness finder](https://cushionguide.com/studio/foam-firmness-finder/) matches firmness to how you sit, and [airing a new foam cushion](https://cushionguide.com/guides/new-foam-cushion-smell-airing/) covers the smell.

## 1.8 lb, ILD 44, and an honest blank

A buyer in the US sent a spec of their own: foam of at least 1.8 lb density and an ILD of 44, so adults wouldn't sink through a deep seat used every day. Numbers are my language, so I liked this one.

The workshop answered with what it could stand behind. Its foam, about 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³), is over the minimum, and it's firm. It couldn't give an ILD figure, because that foam has no official ILD rating, and the workshop said so instead of guessing.

The cushion came out at 25 x 78 x 6 in (64 x 198 x 15 cm) with matching trim; at 6 in, that density handles daily adult seating. The lesson carries over to certificates: ask for the number, and trust the maker who tells you which numbers they don't have.

## Common mistakes when reading foam claims

- ✗ Treating a foam seal as a seal on the whole cushion. Cover and fiber fill need their own proof.
- ✗ Reading CertiPUR as CertiPUR-US. They're separate programs with separate lists.
- ✗ Trusting a footer badge. A logo with no producer name and no directory listing is decoration.
- ✗ Expecting new foam to arrive odorless. Low VOC is a limit, not zero; smell peaks in days 1 to 3, so unwrap it, separate the pieces for 24 to 48 hours and never heat it.
- ✗ Judging foam straight out of the vacuum bag. It needs 48 to 72 hours, sometimes a week, to recover; measure after 3 to 4 days.

> **Tailor's margin:** CertiPUR-US foam certification covers the polyurethane foam only; the cover fabric, zipper and fiber fill of a cushion need their own proof.

> A CertiPUR-US foam claim counts only if the brand or its foam producer is listed in the program's public directory, checked by name.

## Buyer questions: certificates, density and what's inside

**A common question:** Is your foam CertiPUR-US certified? Or OEKO-TEX?

**The workshop's answer:** No CertiPUR-US claim is made: the workshop isn't in the program's directory. Asked this directly, the workshop described the foam itself, a medium-hard grade at about 1.75 lb/ft³ (28 kg/m³) for floor sofas. Its fabrics come from a mill certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100 (03.T.3239).

**A common question:** What density foam goes into a custom bench cushion?

**The workshop's answer:** High-density polyurethane at about 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³), a high-resilience foam with a medium-firm feel. It's firmer and longer-lasting than the about 1.75 lb/ft³ (28 kg/m³) foam often specified, and on a 3 in (7.5 cm) cushion it holds its shape for years.

**A common question:** What's inside the tufted floor cushions? Is there a foam core?

**The workshop's answer:** No foam core. They're packed densely with polyester hollow fiber rolled into small clusters, often with some cotton filler, and sewn by hand, so they feel closer to cotton than to foam. The workshop has sent photos of the filling on request.

**A common question:** Could the floor sofa be made with natural latex instead of foam?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, natural latex can replace the high-density foam for an extra charge, quoted for your size. Raw cotton or wool isn't offered for the floor sofa core, but the cover can be cotton and linen.

## Seal questions, short answers

### Does CertiPUR-US certify a whole mattress or cushion?

No. It certifies flexible polyurethane foam only, not furniture, product lines or companies. The cover fabric needs separate proof, and a fiber- or latex-filled cushion falls outside the program.

### How often is CertiPUR-US foam retested?

Each foam type is tested every 6 months in its first year, then once a year. Brands using the name also renew annually, so check that a listing is current, not just that it once existed.

### What does low VOC mean on a foam label?

Under CertiPUR-US it means emissions under 0.5 ppm in a chamber test. That is a limit, not zero, so new foam can still smell for a few days; unwrap it and let it air before judging.

### Is CertiPUR the same program as CertiPUR-US?

No. CertiPUR is the European program run by EUROPUR; its label holders are foam producers, tested yearly by independent labs. A claim that says only CertiPUR belongs on the European holder list.
