# Bouclé and teddy cushions: living with loops, snags and pets

*The texture everyone wants in a small apartment. Soft, forgiving, warm. Also a surface made entirely of loops, and loops catch things.*

> **The quick answer:** A bouclé cushion suits accent pillows and low-traffic floor seating better than a busy family bench, because its loops catch claws, rings and hook-and-loop tape and hold pet hair. Tight, small loops snag less than loose ones. Vacuum regularly with an upholstery brush, blot spills, and wash removable covers at 86°F (30°C) on gentle. Order a swatch first: bouclé varies widely.

## A fabric made of loops, and why it forgives

Bouclé hides a crumb better than almost any fabric in the house, and catches a claw faster.

[Bouclé](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#boucle) is woven from looped yarn. The loops sit on the face like small knots, so the surface has depth instead of sheen. That is why a **bouclé cushion** works in a small room: it hides crumbs and pressure marks, reads warm in cool light, and softens a white wall.

The workshop's [teddy fabric](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#teddy-fabric) is its nearest match: a curly polyester with its own color chart, priced above velvet and the easy-clean soft fabric. A curly, knotted bouclé collection is offered for custom shapes. Both live in [bouclé and teddy fabrics](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/boucle-and-teddy/).

Bouclé comes in many weights and loop sizes, and that matters more than color.

- **Tight, small loops** sit close to the backing. They snag less and keep their shape.
- **Loose, large loops** look chunkier and feel softer. They catch more.
- **Performance bouclé** resists snags better. It is not scratch-proof.

## Where bouclé and teddy earn their place

| Spot | Bouclé or teddy? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Accent and lumbar pillows | Yes | Handled gently, rarely scratched, easy to swap |
| Floor cushion in a quiet corner | Yes | Low traffic, and the texture hides marks |
| Adult living-room floor sofa | Usually | Choose tight loops and keep a lint roller nearby |
| Children's playroom floor mat | A thick teddy can work | The workshop suggested it for a playroom; few hooks, few claws |
| Entry bench by the door | No | Bag straps, keys and zipper pulls pass by all day |
| The cat's favorite perch | No | Claws find loops; choose a tight, loop-free weave |

## Caring for a loop fabric, step by step

1. **Vacuum with a brush, not a beater bar**: Use the upholstery brush on low suction and move in one direction. Dust acts as an abrasive, so regular vacuuming slows both wear and pilling.
2. **Lift pet hair lightly**: Textured faces hold fur. Use a lint roller with light pressure, or a slightly damp rubber glove stroked in one direction. Pressing hard lifts loops along with the hair.
3. **Blot spills, never rub**: Press a white cloth onto the spill and lift it straight up. Rubbing frays a loop face. Test any cleaner on a hidden seam allowance first.
4. **Ease a snag back, never pull it**: A pulled loop is yarn still attached to the weave, and pulling runs it along the row. Work it back to the underside with a blunt needle, or trim it level with the surface.
5. **Wash the cover cool and gentle**: Removable covers unzip and machine wash at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle, inside out, with mild detergent and no bleach. Air dry. Heat is harder on loops than water is.
6. **Shave pills, do not pick them**: Pilling usually shows within the first 4 to 6 months of use. Polyester pills stay attached, so remove them with a fabric shaver held flat and light, not with fingers.
7. **Rotate what gets sat on**: Flip floor cushions and swap pillow positions every few weeks, so one face does not take all the elbows, heels and paws.

> **Tailor's margin:** Hook-and-loop tape and bouclé should never touch: the hook strip grabs loops on contact. Keep any fastened seam on the underside, away from the face.

## The U-shaped floor sofa that needed a second swatch

A buyer in the US planned a large U-shaped floor sofa for a room about 180 x 180 in (457 x 457 cm), built from modules of about 35 x 35 in (90 x 90 cm) at the corners, 47 x 35 in (120 x 90 cm) and 24 x 35 in (60 x 90 cm).

The vacuum-packed pieces arrived flat and rose in 36 to 48 hours, as expected. The texture did not match what she had pictured.

The workshop sent new fabric samples and remade the covers in the fabric she chose. Bouclé is not one texture. It is a family, and the only honest preview is a swatch in hand, in your own light. [Fabric swatches before ordering](https://cushionguide.com/guides/fabric-swatches-before-ordering/) explains how samples work.

## Claws, rings and the pet question

No fabric is claw-proof. Loop fabrics are simply easier for a claw to find. Tight, flat, loop-free weaves snag far less, which is why the workshop points cat owners to its leather-look pet-friendly chart (100% polyester, rated 88,000 Martindale cycles) or to velvet, whose short, tight pile gives a claw little to hook.

Rings, watch clasps and zipper pulls catch loops too. So does the hook side of any fastener.

If a pet sleeps on the seat, a calm split works: bouclé or teddy for the pillows, a tight weave for the seat itself. Where does your cat actually sleep? Start there. ## Small mistakes with loop fabrics

- ✗ Ordering a large bouclé piece from a screen photo. Weights and loops vary; get a sample first.
- ✗ Assuming a sofa called 'teddy' is made of teddy fabric. On many listings it is a model name, in ribbed corduroy.
- ✗ Assuming the linen is a bouclé. It has no looped yarn.
- ✗ Sewing hook-and-loop joins onto a bouclé face.
- ✗ Putting a loose-loop cushion on the bench where bags and keys land.
- ✗ Pressing a hot iron onto loops. Steam or iron only on low, through a cloth, after a test on a hidden seam allowance.

> If a cat or a key ring reaches it every day, choose a tight, loop-free weave. Keep bouclé cushions for pillows and quiet floor seating.

## Ordering bouclé or teddy without surprises

Colors are chosen by code from the teddy or bouclé chart and written in the order note. What past orders have taught:

- Order samples first. The sample fee mainly covers shipping and can be credited against a later order.
- The modular bouclé floor couch comes in fixed modules. Extra modules can be added; sizes do not change.
- A thick teddy was the workshop's suggestion for a designer's playroom: three floor mats of 44 x 44 x 6 in (112 x 112 x 15 cm).
- Covers wash on gentle, as in [how to wash cushion covers](https://cushionguide.com/guides/how-to-wash-cushion-covers/).

More shapes live in [floor cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/floor-cushions/) and [living room cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/living-room-cushions/).

Loops forgive marks.
Loops remember claws.
Put them where hands rest.

## Buyer questions: teddy, bouclé and claws

**A common question:** Do you make cushions in teddy, sherpa or bouclé?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Teddy has its own color chart and is the closest option to bouclé, and a bouclé collection with a curly, knotted texture is offered for custom shapes. Teddy is polyester and costs more than velvet or the soft fabric. The linen is not a bouclé; it has no looped yarn.

**A common question:** Is the teddy floor sofa actually made of teddy fabric?

**The workshop's answer:** No. Teddy is the model's name. The teddy floor sofa, its pouf, its ottoman and its replacement covers all use the same ribbed corduroy in every color. Covers in velvet, linen or teddy bouclé can be ordered as separate options.

**A common question:** My cats claw everything. Which fabric holds up best?

**The workshop's answer:** No fabric is fully claw-proof, but tightly woven, loop-free fabrics snag much less, because claws catch on looped weaves. The workshop's fabrics are tightly woven without loops, and its first pick for cats is the pet-friendly chart. Order swatches so the cats can test the texture before the cushion arrives.

**A common question:** Which fabric is easiest to keep clean with kids and pets around?

**The workshop's answer:** Indoors, the smooth soft fabric is the top easy-care pick: durable, it doesn't collect dust or lint, and it wipes clean. Velvet is also easy to clean. A thick teddy was suggested for a playroom. Outdoors, choose the water-repellent range. Covers wash at 86°F (30°C).

**A common question:** Are the fabrics on the listing the only ones I can choose?

**The workshop's answer:** No. A listing shows the most-ordered fabrics, usually in one chart. More charts, teddy among them, are shared on request, and off-chart codes can be written in the order note. Different fabrics can be mixed in one order, and specially sourced fabrics can cost more.

## Short answers on loop fabrics

### Does bouclé pill?

It can. Some bouclé hides pills in its texture, while cheaper synthetic and natural-fiber bouclé pills more. Polyester pills stay attached, so remove them with a fabric shaver, not fingers. Pilling usually appears in the first 4 to 6 months.

### Can a fabric protector spray go on teddy or bouclé?

Yes, applied at home once the covers arrive. Test it on a hidden seam allowance first. The main protection is still the zippered cover, which comes off for a gentle 86°F (30°C) wash.

### Should bouclé pillows have piping or contrast trim?

Either works. Piping gives a crisp edge; leaving the trim off gives a softer, all-one-color look. One buyer asked for cream teddy bouclé pillows with the black trim left off, and they were made plain.

### Can teddy be mixed with velvet in one set?

Yes. Fabrics can be mixed within one order. A buyer with burnt orange and turquoise sofas paired a teddy with orange, denim, navy and cream velvets across a 117 in (297 cm) window cushion, two bolsters and a set of pillows.
